A strap monster is a watch that looks at home with a range of straps, but it is an enthusiast’s style term—not a standardized category or a measurable rating. The most useful way to choose one is to check the exact reference’s lug width and attachment system, then weigh its case dimensions, water resistance and movement against how you plan to wear it. The available official specifications are not consistent enough to support a reliable cross-brand ranking, so the examples below show what can—and cannot—be verified.
What makes a watch a strap monster?
Versatility comes from a mix of design and fit. A case that works with both sporty and dressier straps may change character dramatically, but a watch is only practical to restyle if compatible straps are easy to source and attach. Lug width is a starting point, not a guarantee: the case shape, clearance between the lugs, spring-bar arrangement and any proprietary attachment system can limit your choices.
Enthusiasts sometimes use the phrase for specific models. For example, one watch-community commenter called the Seiko Alpinist a “strap monster”; that is an individual opinion, not evidence of broad consensus or verified compatibility across strap types (community discussion).
What to check before buying straps
Confirm the lug width
Measure or verify the distance between the inside edges of the lugs, in millimetres, and match it to the strap’s stated width. Tissot lists a 20 mm lug width for the PR516 38 mm reference T1494071605100, making “20 mm watch straps” a relevant search for that reference—but only if the strap also clears the case and uses a compatible attachment. Do not assume a watch’s diameter tells you its lug width.

Check how the strap attaches
Look for standard spring bars, a quick-release bar, a proprietary connector or a bracelet-specific end link. Tissot describes a quick-release interchangeable bracelet system for PR516 models. That supports the convenience of changing the specified bracelet, but does not prove that every third-party strap fits every PR516 variant. Check the exact model reference and the strap maker’s compatibility information before ordering.
Judge the case and intended use
Diameter and thickness affect how a watch sits on the wrist and whether a change of strap improves its proportions. Water resistance should also suit your intended use; a strap’s material does not increase the watch’s water resistance. Finally, consider whether the movement and power reserve fit your habits, rather than treating versatility as a styling question alone.

How to choose a strap-friendly watch
- Find the exact reference. Record the full model number and confirm the regional product page; specifications can differ between variants.
- Verify lug width and attachment. Check the manufacturer’s specifications and determine whether the watch takes standard spring bars or requires a particular connector.
- Confirm the straps you actually want. Check the strap maker’s compatibility details, especially for quick-release systems, unusual lug shapes or fitted end links.
- Compare the watch as a whole. Check case diameter and thickness, water resistance, movement and power reserve, alongside the supplied bracelet or strap.
- Buy only after compatibility is clear. A matching width alone does not establish that a strap will fit safely or sit cleanly against the case.
Can these examples be ranked as the best?
Not responsibly on the available official specifications. The Tissot examples document lug width and an interchangeable quick-release bracelet, while the cited Seiko, Orient and Citizen pages establish bracelet configurations or movement and case facts without confirming alternative strap fit. A bracelet-only listing is not evidence that a watch is—or is not—a strap monster. To make a defensible model-to-model ranking, each exact reference would need comparable verification of lug width, attachment and compatible strap options, in addition to dimensions and use-relevant specifications.
