The Christopher Ward C1 Bel Canto and C12 Loco share a 41 mm case and 3 ATM water resistance, but they offer very different experiences. Choose the Bel Canto for an automatic movement that chimes each hour; choose the handwound Loco for its long stated power reserve and an unobstructed view of its balance and escapement.

What is the difference between the Bel Canto and C12 Loco?
The Bel Canto makes the movement audible
The C1 Bel Canto’s automatic FS01 movement includes a striking mechanism. It chimes on the hour, every hour; a pusher at 4 o’clock switches the chime on or off, and an indicator shows whether it is set to chime or silent. Christopher Ward’s handbook says the sound comes from a steel spring around the dial, tuned to a D note.
The handbook credits technical director Frank Stelzer with adapting the company’s jumping-hour movement to create the hourly chime. That makes the Bel Canto the choice for someone who wants a mechanical complication to be heard as well as seen.

The Loco puts its mechanics on display
The handwound C12 Loco is a time-only watch, not an hourly chiming alternative. Its CW-003 movement is presented through a floating sapphire time display, with the free-sprung balance and escapement visible from the dial side. Its appeal is visual and mechanical rather than audible.
Winding and power reserve
The Bel Canto winds itself while worn and has a stated 38-hour reserve. The Loco must be wound by hand, but its stated reserve is 144 hours. In practical terms, the Loco offers a longer interval before it needs winding if left unworn, while the Bel Canto avoids routine manual winding during regular wear.

Those figures are manufacturer specifications, not independently measured results. Consider whether you prefer the daily ritual of winding a handwound watch or the automatic convenience—and shorter stated reserve—of the Bel Canto.
Case fit, materials and water resistance
Both watches measure 41 mm across and are rated to 3 ATM (30 m), so neither has an advantage in those headline specifications. The Bel Canto is Grade 5 titanium and 13 mm thick, with a 48 mm lug-to-lug measurement. The Loco is stainless steel and 13.70 mm thick, with a slightly shorter 47.50 mm lug-to-lug measurement.

The strap arrangements differ: the Bel Canto takes a 22 mm strap and its handbook specifies quick-release pins, while the Loco is specified with an integrated 25 mm strap design. Do not assume a generic replacement strap will fit either watch without checking the attachment and exact variant.
A 3 ATM rating is a shared specification, not a reason to treat these as equivalent to dedicated swim watches. Follow the manufacturer’s water-resistance guidance for the specific watch.

Which one should you choose?
- Choose the C1 Bel Canto if you want an automatic watch with an hourly chime, a user-operated silent mode, and a titanium case.
- Choose the C12 Loco if you prefer handwinding, a much longer stated power reserve, and a dial that exposes the balance and escapement.
- Compare fit in person or against a watch you know if case thickness, lug-to-lug reach, or strap integration is decisive; the diameter alone does not describe how either watch will wear.
Christopher Ward’s Bel Canto handbook recommends servicing every three to four years. This is the manufacturer’s guidance for that model, not a universal service interval for all watches.
