The Blancpain Fifty Fathoms is an icon because it helped define the modern diver’s watch: Blancpain dates its debut to 1953 and describes it as the first modern diver’s watch. Today, the collection spans Automatique, Bathyscaphe and Tech families, but specifications differ by reference. Choosing one means weighing size, material, movement, functions, strap and intended use—not assuming every Fifty Fathoms is the same watch.
What makes the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms iconic?
Blancpain traces the Fifty Fathoms to 1953, when it says the watch was presented as the first modern diver’s watch. That “first” is the brand’s historical claim; it is best understood as Blancpain’s account of the collection’s origins, not as an independently adjudicated priority claim. Blancpain’s collection history and its Fifty Fathoms history page give the brand’s account.
According to Blancpain, the watch was created under the leadership of Jean-Jacques Fiechter, then the company’s CEO and a passionate diver. The brand identifies a lockable rotating bezel, enhanced water resistance, a high-contrast dial with luminous markers, an automatic movement and anti-magnetic protection among the original’s pioneering features. Those design priorities help explain the Fifty Fathoms’ enduring association with purpose-built diving watches.
Blancpain’s current collection includes Automatique, Bathyscaphe and Tech families. These are not merely size variations: individual references differ in case material, movement, complications, bezel details and strap. The brand’s craftsmanship page describes the Automatique’s progression from the original 45 mm case through 42 mm to 38 mm, while its collection campaign lists all three sizes.

The examples below are specific Blancpain references, not specifications for every watch in each family. The figures are manufacturer-published specifications; they do not establish comparative comfort or performance in independent testing.
| Reference | Case and water resistance | Movement and reserve | Functions and strap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fifty Fathoms Automatique 5015 1130 52A | 45 mm steel; 30 bar | Automatic calibre 1315; 120-hour power reserve | Date; interchangeable rubber strap |
| Fifty Fathoms Grande Date 5050 12B30 B52A | 45 mm titanium; 30 bar | Automatic calibre 6918B; 120-hour power reserve | Large date; interchangeable sail-canvas strap |
| Bathyscaphe 38 mm example | 38 mm steel; 30 bar | Automatic calibre 1150; 100-hour power reserve | Unidirectional bezel with ceramic insert; sail-canvas strap |
Blancpain also highlights a Tech family. The official Tech product result describes a 45 mm grade 23 titanium case, 30 bar water resistance, helium valve, calibre 1315A, 120-hour reserve and two interchangeable rubber straps. Confirm the exact reference and its current details on the official collection page before comparing or buying; those specifications should not be generalized to every Tech configuration.
Which Fifty Fathoms should you choose?
Start with the exact reference and the features you value most. The cited 45 mm Automatique suits a buyer looking for a steel case, date and rubber strap; the cited Grande Date pairs a 45 mm titanium case with a large-date display; the 38 mm Bathyscaphe example offers the smallest case among these three comparisons and a distinct ceramic-insert bezel. These are specification-based distinctions, not claims about how each watch wears.
- Compare fit first: check case diameter and thickness, then consider how the watch’s proportions will suit your wrist. The cited sources establish diameters for these examples but do not provide a comparative comfort assessment.
- Choose material and function: steel and titanium appear in the examples above; the Grande Date adds a large-date complication, while the Automatique example has a date display.
- Compare the movement and reserve: the cited 5015 and Grande Date list 120 hours, while the cited Bathyscaphe lists 100 hours. These are model-specific manufacturer figures.
- Match the watch to its use: Blancpain lists 30 bar for each example in the table. Water resistance alone does not establish suitability for a particular dive or replace following the manufacturer’s use and care guidance.
- Check strap compatibility: cited references list interchangeable straps, but a replacement strap must match the exact reference and dimensions. Do not assume a third-party strap fits or is endorsed by Blancpain.
Price and availability depend on geography and configuration. Check Blancpain’s regional product page for the current details of the reference under consideration; a collection-level specification should not substitute for the individual product listing.

What to know before buying or owning one
Use the full reference number when comparing listings, asking about a strap or checking a specification. Even watches within the Fifty Fathoms collection can differ in case size and material, movement, complication, caseback and strap. The official product pages are the appropriate place to verify those details for a particular configuration.
If you are buying from a seller other than Blancpain, verify the seller, authenticity, exact reference and included configuration independently. A product page’s listed interchangeable strap does not validate a third-party accessory, and the available official specifications do not establish current stock or seller details outside Blancpain’s own pages.
