Choose the Breitling Navitimer Automatic 36 if you want its aviation-linked look and bidirectional slide-rule bezel. Choose the Chronomat Automatic 36 if its integrated Rouleaux bracelet, slimmer listed case, or higher stated water resistance better fits your priorities. The comparison below is between two specific references—not every 36 mm version—and does not establish which feels more comfortable or will prove more durable in use.

Choose by design: slide rule or Rouleaux bracelet

Navitimer: aviation-linked appearance and slide-rule bezel

The cited Navitimer’s defining feature is its bidirectional slide-rule bezel. Its aviation-linked appearance makes it the more natural choice if that design language is the reason you are considering a Breitling. The bezel is the distinctive feature here; whether you will use it is a separate question from whether you prefer its look.

Chronomat: integrated bracelet and date at 6

The cited Chronomat pairs its case with an integrated Rouleaux bracelet and places the date at 6 o’clock, according to Breitling’s product description. Breitling says the Chronomat was introduced for its centennial in 1984 and arose from work with the Italian aerobatic squadron Frecce Tricolori. That origin gives the model its own aviation history, but the two watches express it differently: the Navitimer’s slide-rule bezel is overt, while the Chronomat’s cited configuration is distinguished by its bracelet and layout.

Water resistance and thickness: the clearest specification differences

The Chronomat reference is listed at 9.68 mm thick and 10 bar / 100 m water resistance; the Navitimer reference is listed at 11.42 mm and 3 bar / 30 m. Those figures may help narrow a choice if a thinner listed case or higher stated water resistance matters to you.

Water-resistance ratings are specifications, not a recommendation to use either watch for diving. Match intended activities to Breitling’s guidance for the exact watch, and do not infer comfort from the rating or from the shared 36 mm diameter.

Movements and power reserve

The Navitimer uses the self-winding Breitling 17, with an approximate 38-hour power reserve. The Chronomat uses the self-winding Breitling 10, with an approximate 42-hour reserve. The cited Chronomat therefore has about four more hours of stated reserve; that difference alone does not establish which movement or watch is preferable for your use.

Price: compare exact references and your region

On the cited official US pages, the Navitimer configuration is listed at USD 5,700 and the Chronomat at USD 10,250, both excluding sales tax. These are prices for the named configurations, not a universal price comparison between every Navitimer 36 and Chronomat 36. Check current pricing in your region and compare the exact references, materials, and bracelet or strap configurations before deciding.

Which Breitling 36 mm watch should you buy?

Pick the Navitimer Automatic 36 if…

  • You prefer the circular slide-rule bezel and Navitimer’s aviation-linked appearance.
  • The cited Chronomat’s higher water-resistance rating and thinner listed case are not your deciding priorities.
  • The A17327211G1P1 configuration fits your budget and preferences after checking current local pricing.

Pick the Chronomat Automatic 36 if…

  • You prefer the integrated Rouleaux bracelet and date-at-6 layout of reference A10320591G1A1.
  • You value its listed 9.68 mm thickness and 10 bar / 100 m water resistance over the Navitimer’s corresponding specifications.
  • Its exact configuration and regional price work for you.

Try both on before deciding

A 36 mm diameter does not settle wrist fit. Case shape, bracelet construction, how the watch sits on your wrist, and your own comfort all matter, and the specifications above are not hands-on comfort or durability tests. If possible, try the exact references—and the bracelet configuration you would actually buy—on your wrist before choosing.
