The best 2000s G-Shock depends on the shape and features you want: choose a G-5600 or G-5600E for the square Origin style, a GW-6900-1 for a round case with solar charging and radio time calibration, or a Mudman, Gulfman, or Riseman for specialized construction or sensors. The references below are models Casio documents as introduced between 2000 and 2009; a family name alone does not establish a watch’s age.

What are the best G-Shock watches from the 2000s?

These are use-case picks, not a universal ranking. Casio’s official history establishes the models’ dates and described features, but does not compare their real-world reliability, comfort, toughness, accuracy, or value.

What you want Period reference Documented date and distinguishing feature
Square Origin styling and solar power G-5600 / G-5600E Casio dates the G-5600 Tough Solar addition to 2002; its timeline separately lists the G-5600E as a 2009 Origin model. Casio G-Shock history
Square styling with radio time calibration GW-5600J 2005; Casio describes it as solar-powered and radio-controlled. Casio G-Shock history
Round case, solar, and radio calibration GW-6900-1 2009; Tough Solar and Multiband 6. Casio G-Shock history
Mud- and dust-oriented construction G-9000 Mudman 2007; Casio describes mud/dust-resistant construction. Casio G-Shock history
Rust-conscious exposed metal components G-9100 Gulfman 2007; Casio says exposed metal parts use titanium as part of a rust-resistant structure. Casio G-Shock history
Altimeter, barometer, and temperature readings GW-9200 Riseman 2008; Multiband 6 and twin sensors. Casio G-Shock history

Which 2000s G-Shock has Tough Solar?

G-5600 and G-5600E

The G-5600 is the key early-decade square if solar power is a priority: Casio dates the Tough Solar addition to the 5600 line to 2002. The G-5600E is a distinct reference that Casio lists as a 2009 Origin model, so do not treat the two names or dates as interchangeable. Casio’s G-Shock history documents both milestones.

Solar charging can reduce dependence on routine battery changes, but it does not mean a decades-old watch needs no maintenance. When buying one used, check its charging behavior and the correct reference-specific manual rather than assuming a solar model is healthy because it still runs.

GW-5600J

For a square watch that adds radio time calibration, the GW-5600J is Casio’s documented 2005 option. Its reception compatibility depends on the exact variant and region; consult the manual for that reference and confirm the watch can receive a signal where you intend to use it. Casio’s chronology identifies its solar and radio-controlled features.

What is the difference between a G-5600 and GW-6900?

The clearest difference in this period shortlist is case shape and exact model identity: the G-5600/G-5600E are square Origin references, while the GW-6900-1 is a round 6900 reference documented in 2009 with Tough Solar and Multiband 6. The 6900 family debuted in 1995, but that family date does not make every 6900 a 1990s watch—or establish the release date of a particular reference. Casio’s history dates the GW-6900-1 specifically.

  • Multi-Alarm with Flash Alert: Stay on schedule with a customizable alarm, hourly chime, and flash alert that combines light and sound for added convenience.

Choose by how the case sits on your wrist and how you read its display, then verify the complete reference. Radio calibration also depends on the model variant and reception region; the family name alone is not enough to confirm feature compatibility.

Which specialist 2000s G-Shock fits your use?

G-9000 Mudman for mud- and dust-oriented use

Casio dates the G-9000 Mudman to 2007 and describes its construction as mud/dust resistant. That is a model-specific feature description, not a reason to assume all G-Shocks share the same protections. Casio G-Shock history

G-9100 Gulfman for corrosion-conscious construction

The 2007 G-9100 Gulfman is the pick to investigate if exposed metal components matter: Casio says those parts use titanium as part of a rust-resistant structure. This describes the construction rationale; it does not establish that a used example is corrosion-proof or remains in sound condition. Casio G-Shock history

GW-9200 Riseman for sensor functions

Casio dates the GW-9200 Riseman to 2008 and lists Multiband 6, an altimeter, a barometer, and a temperature sensor. Those functions may suit someone who wants readings on the wrist, but watch sensors are not substitutes for dedicated navigation or safety equipment. Casio G-Shock history

How to buy a vintage G-Shock

Historical model identity and manufacturer-described features do not establish current stock, a fair market price, authenticity, service history, or the reliability of an individual watch. Listings and seller condition can vary, so assess the exact example rather than buying on the family name alone.

  1. Confirm the identity. Check the complete case-back reference and module against the correct manual. Match the claimed features to that exact variant.
  2. Inspect wear parts and controls. Look for cracked or brittle resin, check that the display and buttons work, and make sure the strap and bezel fit correctly.
  3. Check power and service claims. For a solar model, ask about charging state and operation. For any claimed repair or water-resistance test, request specific service details rather than assuming it was done.
  4. Treat water resistance as condition-dependent. A rating from the watch’s original specification does not prove that a decades-old example still seals. Do not rely on it in water without current, credible testing.
  5. Consider region and actual needs. Confirm radio reception compatibility for the exact model and your location, and choose sensor or specialist construction features only if you will use them.

A later sibling or current reissue may be easier to find, but it is not a 2000s release unless its exact reference is documented to that period.
