Yes—most recent Samsung Galaxy Watches can be worn for ordinary pool or shallow freshwater swimming. However, the exact model matters, and “water-resistant” does not mean permanently waterproof. Samsung’s current standard models, including the Galaxy Watch7, Watch8, and Watch8 Classic, are listed at 5 ATM/IP68. The Galaxy Watch Ultra is rated 10 ATM/IP68 and has Samsung’s explicit certification for ocean use.
Diving, snorkeling, surfing, water-skiing, fast-moving water, hot tubs, saunas, and high-pressure water remain poor choices. A watch that has been dropped, damaged, repaired, or fitted with a leather or hybrid band also needs extra caution.

The short answer by Galaxy Watch model
Samsung’s guidance is not identical across every product sold under the Galaxy Watch name. Check the exact model in the Galaxy Wearable app or on the watch before relying on a family-level recommendation.

Samsung’s U.S. support guidance describes many Galaxy Watch models through the Watch7 generation as able to remain under approximately 5 feet of water for up to 30 minutes. That is manufacturer guidance for supported models, not a promise that every watch bearing the Galaxy Watch name has the same protection.

Samsung lists the current U.S. lineup and product specifications on its Galaxy Watch product page. The Watch8’s product page lists 5 ATM/IP68, while Samsung’s water-resistance guidance gives the Ultra separate 10 ATM and ocean-use guidance.
What 5 ATM and IP68 actually mean
The ratings describe controlled laboratory tests. They do not create a universal guarantee for every activity involving water.
5 ATM
Samsung describes 5 ATM testing as submersion in 50 meters of fresh water for 10 minutes while the watch remains stationary, under ISO 22810:2010 conditions. The important word is stationary.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →5 ATM does not mean you can safely dive or swim at 50 meters. Movement, impact, water velocity, jumping, and sudden pressure changes can expose the seals to forces that differ substantially from a static test.
IP68
IP68 includes dust protection and water-ingress protection. Samsung describes its IPX8 water testing as submersion in 1.5 meters of fresh water for 30 minutes under IEC 60529 conditions.

Because ATM and IP testing measure different conditions, neither rating should be treated as a complete activity guide. Samsung’s use restrictions still matter even when the numbers look reassuring.
What 10 ATM means on the Ultra
The Ultra’s 10 ATM rating is higher than the 5 ATM rating on standard models. Samsung also says the Ultra is certified for ocean use and can be submerged up to 100 meters. That makes it the clearest Galaxy Watch choice for ocean swimming, but it does not remove Samsung’s warning against scuba diving or make the device suitable for every high-impact water sport.
Can you swim in a pool?
Generally, yes. Current standard models and the Galaxy Watch Ultra are appropriate for ordinary pool swimming when the watch is undamaged and fitted with a water-suitable band.
For exercise tracking, start a swim workout before entering the water. Samsung says Water lock can activate automatically when a swim workout starts. You can also enable it manually so splashes do not trigger accidental touches or wake gestures.
- Start the swim workout if you want the watch to record the session.
- Turn on Water lock if it has not activated automatically.
- Avoid forceful dives, jumping from height, water slides, and strong jets.
- Rinse the watch with clean fresh water after leaving the pool.
- Dry the watch, sensors, buttons, and band completely before charging.
Pool chlorine and other disinfectants can affect water-resistance performance over time. Rinsing is therefore part of using the watch responsibly, not an optional cosmetic step.

Can you swim in the ocean?
The answer depends on the model.
Galaxy Watch Ultra
Samsung says the Galaxy Watch Ultra is certified for ocean use. It remains important to rinse it with fresh water immediately after saltwater exposure and dry it thoroughly, particularly around buttons and openings.
Standard Galaxy Watch models
Samsung’s U.S. support wording emphasizes fresh-water swimming for most non-Ultra models. Do not assume that a 5 ATM/IP68 standard Galaxy Watch has the same ocean-use positioning as the Ultra. Check the exact model’s regional support page and manual if seawater use is central to your decision.
Original 2018 Galaxy Watch
Samsung’s regional support guidance specifically says the original Galaxy Watch should not be used in swimming pools or the sea, despite its IP68 rating. This is why a generic “all Galaxy Watches are safe to swim with” answer is misleading.
Even with the Ultra, ocean certification does not make salt water harmless. Rinse with fresh water after every ocean session, dry the watch, and avoid scuba diving, deep freediving, and activities involving sudden pressure changes.
What about rain and showers?
| Situation | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Rain | Generally acceptable for supported, undamaged models. |
| Warm shower | Samsung says the watch can work in the shower, but rinse away soap and dry it afterward. |
| Pool | Suitable for ordinary swimming on supported models. |
| Ocean | Prefer the Ultra because Samsung explicitly certifies it for ocean use; rinse every model after saltwater exposure. |
| Hot tub or spa | Avoid. |
| Sauna or steam room | Avoid. |
| Scuba diving | Do not use the watch for this activity. |
| Surfing or water-skiing | Do not use it as recommended equipment. |
| Pressure washer or high-pressure jets | Never expose the watch. |
Shower exposure is lower-risk than swimming, but it is not risk-free. Soap, shampoo, oils, sunscreen, cosmetics, and other chemicals are different from clean fresh water. A leather or hybrid band should not be used for swimming or showering.

Samsung warns against saunas, steam rooms, sudden temperature changes, and drying with heating devices such as hair dryers. Hot tubs are best avoided because they combine heat, chemicals, jets, and pressure. A cold plunge immediately after a sauna or hot tub also creates the kind of sudden temperature change Samsung warns can compromise water resistance.
Why diving and fast-moving water are different
Do not use a Galaxy Watch for scuba diving, snorkeling, diving, surfing, water-skiing, rapids, or other high-impact water activities as a matter of routine.
- Diving produces pressure and movement unlike a static laboratory test.
- Jumping into water can create a sudden impact against the seals.
- Surfing and water-skiing involve high-velocity impacts and forceful water contact.
- Rivers and rapids create continuous, unpredictable pressure and collision risks.
- Previous drops or repairs may already have weakened the case seal.
The Ultra’s 10 ATM rating improves its stated resistance classification, but Samsung still says it is not intended for scuba diving. Use equipment specifically designed and rated for diving or high-impact water sports instead.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to turn on Water lock mode
Water lock is primarily a control-locking feature. It helps prevent accidental screen touches and wake gestures while the watch is wet. It does not increase the ATM rating, repair damaged seals, block chemicals, or make diving safe.
Quick Settings
- From the watch face, swipe down to open Quick settings.
- Tap the Water lock mode icon, shown as two water droplets.
- If you start a swim workout, Water lock may turn on automatically.
- After swimming, press and hold the Home/Power button to turn Water lock off.
- Follow any on-screen instructions if prompted.
Settings
- Open Settings.
- Tap Advanced or Advanced features, depending on the model and software version.
- Tap Water lock.
- Turn on the switch and confirm the prompt if one appears.
Samsung also advises lightly shaking the watch when it gets wet to help remove water. Do this carefully; Water lock is not a substitute for rinsing and drying.

What to do after swimming
- Press and hold the Home/Power button to exit Water lock.
- Lightly shake off excess water.
- Rinse the watch with clean fresh water after pool or ocean exposure.
- Rinse away soap, oils, sunscreen, cosmetics, and other liquid residue.
- Wipe the watch with a soft, clean cloth.
- Allow the watch and band to dry thoroughly.
- Do not use a hair dryer, heater, or other heating device.
- Do not charge the watch until both the watch and charging surface are completely dry.
- Inspect the band separately; leather and hybrid bands are not suitable for water.
If the watch shows condensation, fails to charge, develops screen or sensor problems, or repeatedly restarts after water exposure, remove it from water, let it air-dry, and contact Samsung or an authorized service center. Do not use rice, compressed air, heat, or case disassembly as a repair method.
When should you avoid swimming with a Galaxy Watch?
Do not rely on its original rating if the watch has been dropped, dented, cracked, opened, repaired, or otherwise structurally damaged. Water resistance can weaken through impacts, disassembly, aging, chemicals, and heat. A watch that survived a swim last year may not have the same protection today.
You should also avoid swimming when:
- You cannot identify the exact model.
- The watch has a cracked screen or damaged case.
- It has recently undergone a battery, screen, or other repair.
- You are wearing a leather or hybrid band.
- The activity involves diving, jets, rapids, surfing, water-skiing, or another high-impact environment.
- The water is unusually hot or you will also enter a sauna or steam room.
- You own the original 2018 Galaxy Watch and have not confirmed model-specific guidance.
Which Galaxy Watch is best for swimmers?
For ordinary pool swimming, the Watch7, Watch8, Watch8 Classic, Watch6, Watch5, Watch4, and comparable supported models are generally adequate. The Watch8 Classic does not have a higher water-resistance rating than the standard Watch8; its advantage is its traditional design and rotating bezel.
The Galaxy Watch Ultra is the better fit if ocean swimming is important because Samsung explicitly certifies it for ocean use and gives it a 10 ATM/IP68 rating. That does not justify buying it solely to obtain permission for scuba diving or extreme water sports.
Compare models using Samsung’s official Galaxy Watch lineup and the relevant product documentation for your country. Water-resistance ratings, band materials, software labels, and guidance can vary by exact model, region, and generation.
Final verdict
Use a supported, undamaged Galaxy Watch for normal pool or shallow freshwater swimming, enable Water lock for control protection, rinse off chlorine or salt, and dry it fully before charging. Choose the Galaxy Watch Ultra when Samsung’s explicit ocean-use certification is relevant. Treat every Galaxy Watch as water-resistant—not waterproof—and keep it away from diving, high-pressure or fast-moving water, hot tubs, saunas, and any situation where prior damage may have compromised its seals.
