Use the least destructive option first: restart a slow watch, force-restart a frozen one, and factory-reset only when you need to erase data, change phones, sell the watch, or recover from a serious software problem. On most current Galaxy Watches, the normal factory-reset path is Settings → General → Reset. If the watch is connected, you can also reset it through Galaxy Wearable. If it will not boot or respond, use recovery mode—but that permanently erases the watch.
These instructions cover Wear OS Galaxy Watches, older Tizen-based Galaxy and Gear models, and Galaxy Fit bands. Menu names and button combinations can vary by model, software version, phone, and carrier.

Choose the right kind of reset
“Reset” can mean several different things. Choosing the wrong option may erase data unnecessarily, so use this guide:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Situation | Best first action | Does it erase data? |
|---|---|---|
| The watch is slightly slow | Restart, update software, or remove a problematic app | No |
| The screen is frozen | Force restart | Normally no |
| You are selling or giving away the watch | Back up, unpair, then factory-reset | Yes |
| The watch is stuck on the Samsung logo or boot-looping | Force restart, then recovery reset if necessary | Recovery reset: yes |
| The watch is lost or inaccessible | SmartThings Find → Erase data | Yes, remotely |
| A button is physically damaged | Samsung service | Do not keep attempting button resets |
A normal restart simply turns the watch off and on. A force restart is a hardware-button reboot for an unresponsive watch. A factory reset removes personal data, apps, accounts, settings, and locally stored content. A recovery-mode reset is the same destructive factory reset performed when the normal menus are unavailable.

The phrase “hard reset” is ambiguous: some guides use it for a force restart, while others mean a recovery-mode factory reset. Follow the named procedure and its data-loss warning instead.
Samsung’s official overview of reset methods is available in its Galaxy Watch reset instructions.
Know which Samsung wearable you have
Galaxy Watch4 and newer models—including Watch4, Watch5, Watch5 Pro, Watch6, Watch6 Classic, Watch7, and Galaxy Watch Ultra—use Wear OS. Older Galaxy Watch and Gear models generally use Tizen, with different recovery screens and app labels. Samsung identifies the platform differences in its wearable compatibility guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe original Galaxy Fit is a band rather than a Galaxy Watch and has its own reset path in Galaxy Wearable. Do not assume that every model has the same Settings menu or button combination.
On older devices, you may see labels such as Home key, Power key, or Reset Gear instead of the newer labels. Treat the on-screen wording as model-specific.
Before factory-resetting: use this checklist
- Charge the watch. Use the supplied charging dock where possible. A low battery can make a watch appear dead or interrupt the reset process. Samsung recommends charging during troubleshooting; see its watch power and charging guidance.
- Back up the watch. Use the backup option in Galaxy Wearable or the Samsung account backup process while the watch is still accessible.
- Record settings you cannot afford to lose. Take note of your watch face and complication layout, alarms, notification preferences, app-specific settings, offline music, downloaded media, Wallet cards, and LTE details.
- Update the phone app if possible. Make sure the phone has internet access and Galaxy Wearable is current.
- Prepare LTE service. If the watch was activated using a carrier QR code, Samsung says a new QR code may be required after resetting. Contact the carrier if service does not return.
- Unpair before giving the watch to someone else. Remove the old Bluetooth pairing from the phone’s Bluetooth settings, then factory-reset the watch. This helps prevent pairing conflicts.
A backup is not necessarily a perfect clone. Samsung warns that some data may not transfer when restoring from a Tizen watch to a Wear OS watch. Watch faces, apps, health settings, payment cards, alarms, and downloaded content may need to be configured again. See Samsung’s backup and transfer guidance.

How to force-restart a frozen Galaxy Watch
Try this before a factory reset if the watch is frozen, slow to respond, or showing an unresponsive screen:
- Press and hold the Home/Power key and Back key at the same time.
- Keep holding until “Rebooting…” appears. On some models this can take up to 30 seconds.
- Release both keys and wait for the watch to restart.
This is a reboot, not an intentional factory reset, so it normally preserves the watch’s data. Do not select ordinary Power off if your goal is to force a reboot.
The Galaxy Watch3 has a model-specific startup and recovery procedure, and older watches may use different combinations. If a button is stuck, obstructed, or damaged, repeated presses may not help; Samsung recommends service for physical button problems. Refer to Samsung’s force-restart instructions.
Factory-reset from the watch
On most current Galaxy Watch interfaces:
- Open Settings on the watch.
- Tap General.
- Tap Reset.
- Review the warning.
- Tap Reset, the checkmark, or the equivalent confirmation control.
The watch may restart more than once. When finished, it should display the initial Welcome or setup screen. A factory reset removes personal information, apps, accounts, settings, and locally stored content and returns the watch to its default state.
If you do not see Settings → General → Reset, your model may use an older menu layout or a different label. Use the model-specific instructions in Galaxy Wearable rather than assuming the option is missing.

Factory-reset through Galaxy Wearable
Use this method when the watch is still connected and recognized by your phone:

- Vibrant 1.6” AMOLED Display – Large, high-res screen with smooth touch for easy navigation
- 5ATM & IP68 Water Resistance – Swim-ready and dust-resistant for active lifestyles

- International Model No Warranty in the US. ONLY compatible with Android devices. Samsung Pay - Not Supported. NOT compatible with iPhone or iOS devices.
- Open Galaxy Wearable.
- Tap Watch settings, if that option appears.
- Tap General.
- Tap Reset.
- Confirm the reset.
Some models omit the intermediate Watch settings step. Older Gear models may show Reset Gear instead.
Galaxy Fit
For the original Galaxy Fit, open Galaxy Wearable → About band → Reset band, then confirm. Samsung says the original Galaxy Fit must be reset through Galaxy Wearable or while connecting it to a different phone, and it cannot be remotely reset through SmartThings Find.
Factory-reset a watch that will not boot
Warning: Recovery mode performs a factory reset. It erases the watch and should be used only after you have attempted charging and a force restart, and after backing up whatever data remains accessible.
Samsung’s general recovery sequence is:
- Power off the watch if you can.
- Turn it back on.
- While it starts, press and hold the relevant Power/Home key until “Rebooting…” appears.
- Release the key.
- Immediately press and release the Power/Home key repeatedly to open the Reboot Mode menu.
- Continue pressing until Recovery is highlighted.
- Press and hold the Power/Home key to select it.
- On Wear OS models, choose Wipe data/factory reset.
- Choose Factory data reset and confirm.
- When the wipe finishes, select the option to reboot the watch.
Move quickly once the Reboot Mode menu appears. Samsung warns that waiting too long can allow the watch to boot normally. Recovery labels and controls differ between Wear OS, Tizen, Gear, and individual models.
Galaxy Watch3 and older models
Samsung provides a special Galaxy Watch3 procedure that uses the Power/Home and Back keys together during startup. Do not assume the generic sequence applies unchanged to every older watch.
Remotely erase a lost or inaccessible watch
If the watch is lost or you cannot access its local controls, use Samsung’s SmartThings Find service:

- Open SmartThings Find in a web browser.
- Sign in with the Samsung account associated with the watch.
- Select the watch.
- Choose Erase data.
- Confirm the erase and enter your Samsung account password if requested.
Remote erase is intended for privacy and loss situations, not as the first response to a watch that is merely slow. It is irreversible once completed and depends on the watch being available to the service. Afterward, set up the watch again through Galaxy Wearable.
Samsung says Galaxy Fit cannot be remotely reset through SmartThings Find. Its reset must be performed through Galaxy Wearable or during connection to another phone.
Reconnect and restore after resetting
A reset is not complete when the watch first reboots. Continue through setup:
- Wait for the Welcome screen. If the watch never reaches setup, return to the recovery and boot-loop troubleshooting steps below.
- Open Galaxy Wearable on the phone. Start pairing from Galaxy Wearable, not only from the phone’s generic Bluetooth menu.
- Remove the old Bluetooth pairing if discovery fails. Delete the watch from the phone’s Bluetooth settings, restart both devices, and try again.
- Sign in to accounts. Samsung account access may be required; Wear OS models may also require a Google account.
- Restore supported backup data. Expect some settings and content to require manual recreation, especially when moving between Tizen and Wear OS.
- Reinstall and configure apps. Recreate watch faces, complications, alarms, notifications, health settings, Wallet cards, and offline media.
- Check for updates. Update Galaxy Wearable, its watch plug-in, and the watch software after reconnection.
- Test LTE separately. If cellular service was provisioned with a QR code and does not return, contact the carrier about reactivation or a replacement QR code.
Troubleshooting reset problems
The reset option is missing
Check whether you have an older Gear model, are using Galaxy Fit, or are looking in the wrong section. Galaxy Fit uses About band → Reset band in Galaxy Wearable; older Gear devices may use Reset Gear. Updating Galaxy Wearable may also restore expected menu options.
The watch will not respond to the buttons
Charge it first, remove dirt or obstructions around the keys, and hold the relevant buttons for longer—up to 30 seconds may be needed for the reboot message on some models. If a key is physically stuck or damaged, stop forcing it and arrange Samsung service.
The watch keeps boot-looping
- Force-restart the watch.
- Consider apps installed or updated immediately before the problem.
- If the watch remains usable, remove suspect apps.
- Clear Galaxy Wearable app data if Samsung’s troubleshooting instructions call for it.
- After backup attempts, use recovery mode to factory-reset.
- Seek service if the watch remains stuck or shows physical damage.
Samsung’s boot-loop troubleshooting guidance supports this escalation. Recovery reset erases the watch.

The phone cannot find the reset watch
Confirm that the watch has reached the Welcome screen. Reopen Galaxy Wearable, remove the old Bluetooth pairing, restart both devices, and pair through Galaxy Wearable. Once connected, update the app and watch software.
The backup did not restore everything
That can be expected. Backup restoration is not a bit-for-bit image, and Samsung specifically warns that some data may not transfer between Tizen and Wear OS. Recreate missing watch faces, app settings, alarms, Wallet cards, notification preferences, and downloaded media manually.
Battery drain or crashes continue
A factory reset can remove corrupted settings or problematic apps, but it cannot repair an aged battery, liquid or impact damage, a defective button, a damaged display, charging hardware, or a carrier activation issue. If the watch still fails after a clean reset and software update, stop repeating the reset and contact Samsung service.

Galaxy Watch4 and Galaxy Watch4 Classic are not compatible with iOS. Older Galaxy Watch models that support iPhone can generally be reset through the iOS Galaxy Watch app using a path equivalent to General → Reset, but the exact options depend on the model and app version. Do not apply the older iPhone procedure to Watch4 or newer Wear OS watches.
When to contact Samsung or your carrier
Contact Samsung repair and support when the watch will not charge, has liquid or impact damage, has a stuck or broken button, remains in a boot loop after recovery reset, or continues crashing after a clean setup and update.
Contact your carrier when an LTE watch loses cellular service after reset—particularly if it was activated with a QR code. A new activation QR code may be necessary, but this does not apply automatically to every LTE watch.
If the watch works normally after force-restarting, updating, and removing a suspect app, there is no reason to replace it or perform a destructive reset. If hardware failure persists, compare repair options with Samsung’s current U.S. Galaxy Watch lineup; model support, prices, and promotions change over time.
