Can Your iPhone Track Your Steps? How Reliable Is the Tracker?

Your iPhone can count steps accurately during carried walking, but all-day totals may miss movement when the phone is left behind. Here is what controlled and real-world research shows.

Yes—your iPhone can track steps automatically. Its built-in motion sensors estimate steps, walking distance, flights climbed, walking speed, and related activity without requiring you to start a workout. The catch is that an iPhone can only detect movement while it is with you.

That makes the iPhone useful for step goals and tracking your own activity over time, but not reliable enough to treat as an exact count of every step. During controlled treadmill walking, tested iPhones were generally within 5% of manually counted steps. In everyday life, studies have found average differences of roughly 12% to 21.5%, largely because people leave their phones on desks, in cars, in bags, or in another room.

How the iPhone counts your steps

The iPhone uses its built-in motion sensors to recognize walking-like movement. Apple says the iPhone can automatically capture steps, flights climbed, walking speed, and other walking-related metrics. The Health app stores the underlying activity data, while the Fitness app presents step count and step distance alongside other activity information.

You do not normally need to open Fitness or begin a workout for ordinary walking to be counted. The important requirement is that the phone is physically close enough to detect the movement. An iPhone sitting on a table cannot count the steps you take around your home, and it will not record walking while left in a vehicle or charging in another room.

Motion sensing is also an estimate, not a direct measurement of your feet touching the ground. The algorithm has to decide whether the movement pattern represents steps. That is why carrying position, movement style, speed, and whether the phone is being carried at all can affect the result.

How accurate is iPhone step counting?

The fairest verdict is good during walking, incomplete over a whole day.

Situation What the research suggests Practical meaning
Controlled treadmill walking Generally within 5% of manually counted steps across tested speeds The step detector can perform well when the phone is carried and walking conditions are defined.
Short, directly observed walking protocols Generally below 4% mean absolute percentage error in a 2024 study Supports good detection during a known walking bout, including flat, uphill, zigzag, and other tested routes.
Normal free-living use One study found a 21.5% average difference, or about 1,340 steps per day; another found an undercount of about 12%, or 1,277 steps out of roughly 10,530 The phone may miss a meaningful number of steps when it is not consistently carried.

These results are not contradictory. A phone can count a walking session accurately when it is in your pocket, yet undercount your daily total because you walked around the kitchen, office, or house without it.

Controlled testing is favorable

In one validation study, an iPhone SE used as the criterion device and participants’ iPhone 6-or-newer models differed from manual counts by less than 5% while participants walked on a treadmill at 5, 7.5, and 10 km/h. That is a respectable result for a consumer step counter under controlled conditions.

Apple’s own technical validation compared aggregated iPhone step counts with pressure-mat reference measurements. The reported Pearson correlations were above 0.96 during slow-speed walking, self-selected-speed walking, and a six-minute walk test. A high correlation indicates that the iPhone followed changes in walking activity closely, although it does not prove that it captures every step during an unconstrained day.

Everyday totals are more vulnerable to missed steps

Free-living studies measure what happens when people go about their normal routines rather than walking on a specified treadmill. In that setting, the largest limitation is usually not that the iPhone fundamentally cannot recognize steps. It is that the iPhone is not always being carried.

A 2017 study reported an average free-living difference of 21.5%, equivalent to approximately 1,340 steps per day, and cautioned against treating iPhone models as research-grade pedometers unless phone-carrying compliance is maximized. A separate 2019 study found that iPhones undercounted a pedometer by approximately 12%, or 1,277 steps from an average of 10,530 steps. That study also linked the difference to how often participants carried their phones and where they carried them.

Those figures are study averages, not a correction factor you can apply to your own total. Someone who keeps an iPhone in a pocket all day may see a smaller difference than someone who carries it in a handbag or regularly leaves it behind. Conversely, a person with an unusual gait or movement pattern may see different results even while carrying the phone consistently.

What the 2024 evidence does—and does not—show

A 2024 semi-free-living study involving 100 adults reported generally low errors, below 4% mean absolute percentage error, during short, directly observed walking protocols. The protocols included straight-line, zigzag, uphill, flat, and downhill walking. Downhill walking produced a statistically detectable overestimation, but the reported error was still relatively low.

This is useful evidence that the iPhone’s step detector can work accurately across several walking conditions. It should not be interpreted as proof that the iPhone records every step from morning to night. The walking segments were defined and observed; the phone-availability problem that affects ordinary daily totals was not eliminated.

Why your iPhone may count fewer steps than another device

  1. You did not carry the phone. This is the most important explanation. A phone cannot count movement it cannot sense, including trips around the house while the device is on a desk or walks taken while the phone is charging.
  2. You changed carrying position. A phone in a stable pocket provides a different motion signal from one moving loosely inside a handbag, coat, or backpack. Research has found that carrying location affects results. Apple also says that body-coupled placement—such as a pocket or belt—is important for the most accurate walking-speed and related mobility estimates.
  3. The phone and wearable captured different portions of the day. A watch stays on your wrist while the iPhone is in a bag, in a car, or in another room. A higher wearable total may therefore represent more complete coverage rather than a more accurate estimate of the same steps.
  4. Health is combining multiple data sources. Apple Health can receive step data from the iPhone, Apple Watch, compatible apps, and Bluetooth devices. When multiple sources contribute the same category, Health uses source priority to determine how data is handled. A newer device or app may appear above an existing source automatically.
  5. You are comparing different apps or aggregations. Health and Fitness can display related activity information, while third-party apps may read or write Health data according to their permissions and settings. Two apps can therefore show different totals or time ranges even when they use some of the same underlying data.

How to check which device is contributing your steps

On the iPhone, open Health, select Browse or Search depending on your iOS version, choose Activity, then open Steps. Scroll to Data Sources & Access.

That screen shows which devices and apps are supplying step data. It is also where you can inspect source priority and adjust it when the available controls allow. If you use an Apple Watch, you may see both the iPhone and watch listed. If a third-party fitness app or Bluetooth device is present, check whether it has permission to write step data before assuming the iPhone is the only source.

Source priority does not make a missing phone count steps. It only determines how Health handles data that devices and apps have supplied. The first question is therefore whether the relevant device was actually being worn or carried during the period you are investigating.

How to make iPhone step tracking more useful

  1. Carry the iPhone consistently. If you want an iPhone-only total, keep it with you during ordinary household and workplace walking, not just during outdoor exercise.
  2. Prefer a stable, close-to-body position. A trouser pocket or body-coupled belt position is generally more consistent than a loose bag. This does not guarantee a specific accuracy improvement, but it reduces one source of changing results.
  3. Keep your Health profile current. Height is an input Apple documents for walking-speed and related mobility estimates. It is not a way to recover steps the phone never sensed, but an outdated profile can affect some derived measurements.
  4. Check permissions and sources. Review Health > Activity > Steps > Data Sources & Access if totals seem unexpectedly high, low, or duplicated.
  5. Compare like with like. Do not compare a phone-only day with a day when you wore a watch and assume the devices had identical opportunities to record movement.
  6. Use trends rather than false precision. A consistent iPhone-only routine can show whether your activity is increasing or decreasing, even if the absolute number is not exact.

A simple personal accuracy check

For a practical spot check, choose a known route or a defined block of steps. Manually count the steps while walking it several times, keeping the phone in the same position each time. Compare the iPhone’s result with your manual count under those conditions.

This test can reveal whether your phone and carrying style work well for you, but it is not a laboratory validation. A short route cannot answer how many steps you take while the phone is absent during the rest of the day. A manual tally counter is optional if you find it easier than counting mentally; it is a checking tool, not something most people need for everyday tracking.

Would an Apple Watch be more reliable?

An Apple Watch is usually more complete for all-day step capture because it is worn on your body. It can continue recording while your iPhone is charging, stored in a bag, or left in another room. Apple says iPhone and Apple Watch step detections may be intelligently combined in HealthKit, with the source identifiable in Health.

That is a coverage advantage, not a promise of perfect measurement. A watch can still misclassify movement or disagree with another tracker. A 2024 community-setting study comparing an Apple Watch with an Actical device found only modest correlation, poor continuous agreement, a mean difference of 499 steps per day, and wide limits of agreement. The comparison used an older reference device and does not rank every current Apple Watch or competing tracker, but it is a useful warning against calling any consumer wearable clinical-grade.

If missed steps while your phone is away are the main problem, an Apple Watch or another wearable step tracker is the logical upgrade. Its main benefit is that it stays attached to you—not that it turns step counting into an exact science.

Should you buy an accessory instead?

If you prefer phone-only tracking, a phone running belt, belt clip, or waist pouch can make it easier to keep the iPhone with you during walks and household activity. The rationale is consistency of carrying, not independently proven accuracy. No carrying accessory can make the phone count steps taken when it is not being carried, and there is no evidence here for promising a fixed percentage improvement.

For many users, changing the habit—putting the phone in a pocket before walking around the house—will accomplish the same goal without buying anything. Choose an accessory for convenience and comfort rather than because it claims to guarantee more accurate step counts.

iPhone versus Apple Watch: which should you use?

Your priority Best fit Why
Occasional step goals and personal trends iPhone It is convenient and can be accurate during walking when carried consistently.
More complete all-day coverage Apple Watch or another worn tracker A body-worn device remains with you when the phone is put down.
Exact protocol-level measurement Manual counting or research equipment Consumer phones and watches are estimates and can disagree materially with reference devices.

For ordinary health goals, the most useful device is often the one you use consistently. If you choose the iPhone, interpret the number as a practical estimate and keep your carrying habits consistent. If you choose a watch, expect better coverage but not infallibility.

Final verdict

Your iPhone does track steps automatically, and it can be impressively accurate during a defined walking session. The weakness is all-day completeness: every step taken while the phone is left behind is a step it has no opportunity to record. Real-world research has found undercounting ranging from approximately 12% to 21.5% on average in free-living comparisons, while controlled and observed walking tests have generally shown errors below 5%.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does an iPhone count steps without the Health app being open?

Yes. The iPhone’s motion sensors can capture walking data automatically; you do not normally need to open Health or start a workout. The phone must still be with you, and Health permissions and source settings must allow the data to be recorded.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does my iPhone show fewer steps than my Apple Watch?

The most likely reason is coverage. The watch remains on your wrist while the iPhone may be on a desk, charging, in a car, or in another room. Differences can also result from source priority, app permissions, carrying position, or the devices interpreting movement differently.

Can I make my iPhone count steps more accurately?

Carry it consistently in a stable, close-to-body position such as a pocket or belt. Keep your Health profile current, check Health > Activity > Steps > Data Sources & Access, and compare the phone with a manually counted route if you want a personal check. These steps improve consistency but cannot recover movement recorded while the phone was absent.

Is the iPhone accurate enough for a 10,000-step goal?

Usually, yes, as a personal activity guide—especially if you carry it consistently. The number should be treated as an estimate rather than an exact count, and comparisons are most meaningful when you use the same device and carrying habits from day to day.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The iPhone is a useful step tracker, not an exact pedometer. Its sensor detection can be accurate when you are walking with the phone, but missed steps while the phone is elsewhere are the main reason all-day totals can be low. For better coverage, use a body-worn tracker; for exact measurement, use manual counting or research equipment.
