The original 2018 Galaxy Watch and several older Tizen-era Galaxy Watch and Gear models support iPhone pairing through Samsung’s iPhone companion app. Galaxy Watch4 and every newer Wear OS Galaxy Watch—including Watch5, Watch6, Watch7, Watch8, Watch FE, and Galaxy Watch Ultra—do not support iPhone pairing.
The most important distinction is the platform, not whether the watch has Bluetooth or LTE: Galaxy Watch4 and newer models cannot be made compatible with an iPhone by installing an app, changing a setting, or using cellular service.
Galaxy Watch and iPhone compatibility at a glance
| Watch model or family | Works with iPhone? | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy Watch, 2018 model | Yes | Older Tizen-based model; verify the iPhone and iOS requirements. |
| Galaxy Watch Active | Yes | Samsung lists iPhone 5 or later with iOS 9 or later. |
| Galaxy Watch Active2 | Yes | One of the more practical older Samsung choices for iPhone owners, subject to age, battery, and app limitations. |
| Galaxy Watch3 | Verify carefully | Samsung discusses iPhone notification support for Watch3, but its current general compatibility list does not place it in the primary iOS-compatible-device list. |
| Gear Live, Gear S2, Gear Fit2, Gear S3, Gear Sport, and Gear Fit2 Pro | Generally yes | These are older products and may have region, software, availability, or support limitations. |
| Galaxy Watch4 and Watch4 Classic | No | Wear OS model that depends on Google Play services, which are not supported on iOS. |
| Galaxy Watch5 and Watch5 Pro | No | Not compatible with iPhone. |
| Galaxy Watch6 and Watch6 Classic | No | Not compatible with iPhone. |
| Galaxy Watch7 | No | Not compatible with iPhone. |
| Galaxy Watch8 and Watch8 Classic | No | Samsung describes the current generation as pairing with Android phones, not iPhones. |
| Galaxy Watch FE | No | Samsung lists it as incompatible with iOS. |
| Galaxy Watch Ultra | No | Wear OS model; not compatible with iPhone. |
| Galaxy Fit3 | No | Samsung lists it as incompatible with iOS. |
Samsung’s listed baseline for compatible older Galaxy Watch and Gear products is an iPhone 5 or later running iOS 9 or later, although the exact watch, region, carrier, and software version can impose additional restrictions. Samsung also notes possible instability with iPhone 6S and 6S Plus devices running iOS 10 or later.
Do not confuse the 2018 Galaxy Watch with Galaxy Watch4
The product name is a common source of bad purchases. The original Galaxy Watch released in 2018 is an older Tizen-based watch and can work with an iPhone. The Galaxy Watch4, released later, moved to Wear OS and cannot.
If a listing simply says “Samsung Galaxy Watch,” identify the exact generation before buying. Check the model name on the box, the watch’s About screen, or the seller’s model number. A watch described as Watch4, Watch5, Watch6, Watch7, Watch8, Watch FE, or Watch Ultra is not an iPhone-compatible purchase.

What to prepare before pairing
- Confirm the exact model. Do this before downloading anything. The companion app cannot overcome an unsupported Wear OS model.
- Charge and power on the watch. Setup and software updates can take time, so begin with a well-charged watch.
- Keep the devices close together. Bluetooth pairing is most reliable when the iPhone and watch are nearby.
- Turn on Bluetooth on the iPhone.
- Prepare for a reset if the watch is used. A watch previously paired with another phone may need to be unpaired or reset before it can be set up again. Depending on the model and setup path, resetting can erase watch data. Back up anything important first.
- Check the charger. If the used watch lacks its original accessory, verify the exact model before buying a Galaxy Watch replacement charger. A charger is not required for the Bluetooth connection itself, but it can prevent setup from stopping when the battery is low.
How to pair a compatible Galaxy Watch with an iPhone
- Open the App Store on the iPhone.
- Search for Samsung Galaxy Watch and install Samsung’s Galaxy Watch app. Galaxy Fit products use a separate Galaxy Fit app.
- Open the app and tap Start the Journey.
- Select the watch model shown in the app.
- Follow the Bluetooth pairing instructions. If a matching code appears on the iPhone and watch, confirm that the codes match.
- Accept the requested permissions, especially Bluetooth and notification access.
- Complete any Samsung account, carrier, LTE, or other setup prompts that apply to the particular watch.
- Leave the Samsung Galaxy Watch app installed. It manages supported watch settings, synchronization, connection status, and updates.
Do not try to complete the entire setup only through Settings > Bluetooth. Bluetooth settings can help confirm that the devices are visible, but Samsung intends compatible watches to be configured through the companion app.
Samsung documentation sometimes refers to Galaxy Wearable as the main companion app on compatible platforms. For iPhone setup, however, Samsung’s instructions direct users to the Samsung Galaxy Watch app from the App Store. App names and individual menu labels can change with iOS and app updates.
How notifications and messages work on an iPhone
A compatible older Galaxy Watch can mirror iPhone notifications, but it does not provide the same integration as an Apple Watch. In particular, the iPhone’s Messages app is not available on the watch when it is paired with an iPhone. Samsung attributes this limitation to iOS privacy restrictions.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →You may still see incoming message notifications and other app alerts on supported models such as the original Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Watch Active, Galaxy Watch Active2, and—where the applicable support applies—Galaxy Watch3. Notification mirroring is not the same as having a full messaging client: previews, replies, app synchronization, and notification actions can be limited.
Check these iPhone notification settings
- Go to Settings > Bluetooth and confirm Bluetooth is enabled.
- Go to Settings > Notifications and make sure the relevant apps are permitted to send notifications.
- In the Samsung watch app, enable notification sharing or notification permissions where those controls are available.
- Keep the iPhone unlocked during initial setup and accept every required permission prompt.
- Check Focus and Do Not Disturb settings if expected alerts do not appear.
The exact path can vary by iOS release, watch model, and app version, so a missing menu label does not necessarily mean the watch is incompatible.
Calls, LTE, and using the watch away from the iPhone
Call behavior depends on the watch hardware and its connection state. A Bluetooth Galaxy Watch generally needs an active Bluetooth connection to the iPhone for phone calls. An LTE model may place calls directly when cellular service is active.

LTE activation is a separate issue from iPhone compatibility. Carrier support, plan eligibility, number-sharing requirements, region, and the watch’s eSIM setup can all affect activation. Samsung warns that activation with an iPhone or a non-Samsung phone can differ by carrier and may be limited or unsupported.

Most importantly, LTE does not make an incompatible watch compatible. An LTE Galaxy Watch4, Watch5, Watch6, Watch7, Watch8, Watch FE, or Galaxy Watch Ultra remains unable to pair with an iPhone because its Wear OS and Google Play services requirements are incompatible with iOS.
What you lose compared with Android—or Apple Watch
Even an older compatible Samsung watch is a compromise for an iPhone owner. Expect limitations in several areas:
- Newer-model support: Galaxy Watch4 and later Wear OS models cannot be paired at all.
- Messaging: The native Messages app is unavailable on iPhone pairings; notifications may be mirrored instead.
- Apps and synchronization: App availability, data transfer, and background synchronization are narrower than on Android.
- Payments and platform services: Samsung Pay and other Samsung- or Android-dependent features may be unavailable or restricted on iPhone.
- Health features: Do not assume that health measurements, history, analysis, or synchronization will match an Android setup or Apple Watch. Verify the specific feature for the watch and software version.
- Replies and interactions: Notification actions and message replies may be limited or unavailable.
- Tablet substitutes: An iPad or iPod touch is not a supported substitute for an iPhone in Samsung’s compatibility documentation.
If broad iPhone integration is your priority, an Apple Watch is the more natural platform choice. If you specifically want Samsung hardware, an older compatible model can still be useful for basic timekeeping, activity tracking, and notification mirroring—but it should not be presented as an Apple Watch equivalent.
Troubleshooting: pairing fails or notifications do not work
1. Stop if the model is unsupported
If the watch is a Galaxy Watch4, Watch5, Watch6, Watch7, Watch8, Watch FE, or Galaxy Watch Ultra, this is not a Bluetooth fault. Samsung does not support iPhone setup for these Wear OS models. A reset, another app, or an LTE plan will not fix it.
2. Remove the old pairing
For a compatible watch that belonged to someone else, remove its old Bluetooth relationship from the previous phone where possible. The watch may also need to be reset before it can be paired with a new phone. Resetting can erase data and may require LTE reactivation, so use it only after preserving anything important.

3. Restart both devices
Restart the iPhone and watch. Turn Bluetooth back on, place the devices close together, reopen the Samsung Galaxy Watch app, and begin setup from inside the app rather than relying on the iPhone’s Bluetooth screen.
4. Update supported software
After reconnecting, check for watch and companion-app updates where the model supports them. Update labels and locations differ between watch generations and software versions.
5. Repair notification permissions
If pairing succeeds but alerts do not arrive, check iPhone notification permissions, Focus modes, Bluetooth status, and the watch app’s notification-sharing setting. Samsung’s iPhone notification guidance identifies Share System Notifications as necessary for message notifications on supported pairings.
6. Treat LTE as a carrier problem
If Bluetooth features work but cellular service does not, contact the carrier and verify watch support, the plan, number sharing, and the eSIM activation process. A reset or move to a new phone can require a replacement QR code or fresh activation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you buy an older Galaxy Watch for an iPhone?
If you want a Samsung watch specifically, the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active2 is a reasonable model to investigate because Samsung lists it as iPhone-compatible. The original 2018 Galaxy Watch is another compatible option. Both are older products, so a purchase decision should include more than the model name.
- Check the exact model number and regional version.
- Ask about battery health and test whether it holds a charge.
- Confirm the seller’s return policy.
- Verify that the Samsung iPhone app still supports the intended setup.
- For LTE models, confirm that the carrier can activate the watch in your region.
- Check the charger and replace it only with a model-specific accessory.
- Do not pay a premium for Watch4-or-newer hardware expecting it to work with an iPhone.
Older compatible watches may be discontinued, refurbished, or sold used. That makes condition, support, and return rights especially important. A replacement band can make sense for an aging watch, but it is optional and must match the case size and lug format; it does nothing to improve iPhone compatibility.
The buying rule that prevents the most mistakes
If it is Galaxy Watch4 or newer, do not buy it for an iPhone. If it is the original 2018 Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Watch Active, Galaxy Watch Active2, or another older Gear model, verify the exact model against Samsung’s current compatibility information and accept the reduced iPhone feature set.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can every Galaxy Watch connect to an iPhone?
No. The original 2018 Galaxy Watch and several older Tizen-era models can connect to supported iPhones. Galaxy Watch4 and all newer Wear OS Galaxy Watch models cannot connect to iPhone.
Can I connect a Galaxy Watch4 to an iPhone with Bluetooth?
No. Galaxy Watch4 uses Wear OS and depends on Google Play services, which are not supported on iOS. Pairing through the iPhone Bluetooth menu does not bypass that platform incompatibility.
Can a Galaxy Watch Active2 work with an iPhone?
Yes, Samsung lists Galaxy Watch Active2 among the compatible older models. Feature availability, iPhone software, region, and app support can still affect the experience.

Will messages appear on a Galaxy Watch paired with an iPhone?
Supported older watches can mirror message notifications when notification sharing is enabled, but the native Messages app is unavailable on iPhone pairings. Notification previews are not equivalent to full messaging integration.
Does LTE let a newer Galaxy Watch work without an iPhone?
LTE can allow supported watch functions and calls away from a phone, but it does not make a Wear OS Galaxy Watch4-or-newer model compatible with iPhone.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Connect an iPhone only to a Samsung watch that Samsung explicitly lists as iOS-compatible. The original 2018 Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Watch Active, and Galaxy Watch Active2 are among the clearest compatible choices. Galaxy Watch4 and newer models are not compatible, regardless of Bluetooth or LTE. Even with an older supported watch, expect notification mirroring and basic features rather than Apple Watch-level messaging, health, app, and payment integration.
