The discontinued Cartier Pasha GMT Power Reserve, reference W31037H3 (also identified as 2388), combines a second-time-zone hand with a power-reserve display in a compact 38 mm Pasha case. Its 24-hour GMT hand is advanced with an inset pusher at 2 o’clock, rather than a jumping local-hour hand. That makes it a distinctive, useful dress-sport watch—but whether a pre-owned one is a good buy depends heavily on its condition, function and service history.

The experience below draws chiefly on Fratello author and owner Brandon Baines’s account of his own watch, not a laboratory test or a survey of owners. Dimensions and materials vary slightly among source listings, so measurements are attributed to the sources that reported them.

What the Pasha GMT Power Reserve does

W31037H3 is a discontinued automatic Pasha with hours, minutes, seconds, date, a 24-hour second-time-zone hand and a power-reserve indicator. Fratello identifies the watch as reference 2388 and describes its Cartier Cal. 480 as a 30-jewel automatic movement based on the Girard-Perregaux 3100, with a reported 50-hour power reserve. A Japanese dealer listing also gives a 50-hour reserve. These are published specifications, not a guarantee of the performance of any particular pre-owned example.

The combination is unusual within the Pasha range: the GMT hand offers a second-zone reference, while the reserve display shows how much running time remains. The result is more informative than a time-and-date Pasha, though the GMT works differently from a modern traveler-style design.

How to set and use the GMT hand

Fratello describes the 24-hour hand as a caller GMT: it can be advanced independently with the inset pusher at 2 o’clock to show another time zone. It is not described as an independently jumping local-hour hand. That distinction matters if you regularly cross time zones and want to reset local time in one-hour steps without disturbing the minutes.

  1. Use the crown to set the watch’s main time and date according to the instructions for the individual watch.
  2. Advance the 24-hour second-zone hand with the inset pusher at 2 o’clock. Confirm that each press advances the hand cleanly and that it aligns with the 24-hour scale as expected.
  3. Read the second zone from the 24-hour hand and scale. Remember that the main hour hand, not the GMT hand, is the ordinary local-time display.

The available owner review identifies the pusher’s function but does not establish a complete setting sequence, pusher interval, or operating precautions. For a specific watch, consult its manual or a qualified watchmaker rather than forcing a pusher or assuming an undocumented procedure.

Case, dial and wearing experience

The Japanese specialist dealer reports a 38 mm stainless-steel case, 10 mm thickness, sapphire crystal, steel bracelet and 100 m water resistance. Fratello gives the owner’s example a 38 mm diameter, 10 mm thickness and 44.5 mm lug-to-lug span. European Watch Company lists its example at 38.5 mm across and 10.2 mm thick. These are source-specific measurements of listed examples, not one definitive factory measurement.

Fratello’s owner describes his watch as comfortable, compact and balanced on the wrist. He praises the bracelet’s finishing and comfort, saying it rarely pulls his arm hair, and finds the power-reserve display practically helpful after the watch has sat unworn for a day or two. He also likes the bezel’s timing utility, but notes that its polished surface readily shows fingerprints and scratches. These are one owner’s impressions and may not describe another watch’s condition or fit.

Whatswatch Parnis Luxury Black Power Reserve Chronometer 43mm Mens deployant Date PA-01127
  • automatic (self winding) seagull 2542 movement
  • Polished solid 316L stainless steel case & see through back
  • Power Reserve Indicator, Date
  • special scratch proof mineral glass
  • Clasp type: deployant buckle

On the owner’s example, Fratello describes a guilloché dial, blued hands, cardinal markers, a bezel pip and tritium luminous material on the hands. Tritium can age, so its color and brightness should be assessed on the individual watch rather than assumed from a model description.

Movement and complication trade-offs

Power reserve

The reserve display makes it easier to judge whether the watch has enough energy to keep running, especially after periods off the wrist. Fratello and a Japanese listing report 50 hours, but an older watch’s actual reserve depends on its condition and winding state; a listing specification cannot confirm the performance of a particular movement.

Caller-style GMT

The inset pusher gives the GMT hand a separate adjustment, useful when you want to keep track of another zone without changing the main time display. Its interaction is less suited to the traveler who wants to jump the local hour hand on arrival. Consider how you actually use a GMT before choosing this over a watch with that type of adjustment.

What one owner’s experience says—and does not say

Brandon Baines wrote that he had worn his watch since August 2022 and that it had earned at least a third of his wrist time. He recounts buying his example in Japan for ¥325,000, then paying ¥91,000 for a Cartier service that included a light polish, water-resistance check and GMT-pusher replacement. He says the service took four weeks. Those figures and timing describe his individual 2022 experience; they are not current pricing, a typical purchase price, a guaranteed service cost or a promised turnaround.

What to check before buying a pre-owned W31037H3

Because the watch is discontinued, assess the specific example rather than relying on model specifications alone. The following checks follow from its documented functions and the condition and service details reported for individual listings; they are not tests performed by the owner-review author.

  • Identity and movement: Verify the reference and have the movement identified by a competent watchmaker. Confirm that the functions correspond to the claimed Cartier Cal. 480 configuration.
  • GMT pusher and hand: Test the inset pusher and confirm the 24-hour hand advances predictably and reads correctly.
  • Date and timekeeping: Check that the date changes and the main time display operates normally. Ask a watchmaker to assess the movement if its condition is uncertain.
  • Power-reserve display: Confirm that the indicator moves as the watch is wound and runs. A static or erratic indication warrants investigation.
  • Bezel, crown cap and exterior: Check the bezel’s operation, crown-cap function, crystal, case surfaces and signs of polishing or damage. A polished bezel can show fingerprints and scratches, as the Fratello owner notes.
  • Bracelet and fit: Verify the bracelet’s condition, included links, clasp operation and fit on your wrist. Do not assume a listed bracelet will fit without confirming its link count and sizing options.
  • Service records: Request dated paperwork and ask exactly what work was done, by whom, and whether the GMT pusher or water resistance was addressed. A dealer listing for one example records a July 1999 guarantee date, a Cartier overhaul in April 2012 and a partner-workshop overhaul and exterior refinishing in May 2016; it also notes aged lume and scratches. That is one watch’s history, not a standard service schedule.

Dealer listings are snapshots of individual watches, not evidence of current stock or a universal service interval. The cited sources do not establish current Cartier service pricing.

Is the Cartier Pasha GMT Power Reserve worth buying?

It is a compelling choice for someone who wants a compact, distinctive Pasha with both a second-zone display and a power-reserve indicator, and who is comfortable with a caller-style GMT. The owner account gives credible reasons to value the watch’s proportions, bracelet and useful reserve display, while also identifying the polished bezel’s susceptibility to visible marks.

For a pre-owned purchase, the decision turns on the individual watch: verified function, condition, bracelet fit and documented service history matter more than the model’s specification sheet. No direct comparative testing of competing watches is established here, so compare alternatives by fit, GMT interaction, complications and service documentation rather than treating this review as a ranking.
