They are not literally suspended: on calibre 9801 MC, the movement’s energy, transmission and regulating components are built into the skeletonized automatic rotor, while a differential keeps the time display readable as that assembly turns. This article focuses on the platinum reference WHRO0082; Cartier also lists a separate white-gold version with different details.
How does the Masse Mystérieuse create its floating-hand effect?
The display is a mechanical illusion produced by the movement’s layout. In a conventional automatic watch, the rotor winds the movement but is visually separate from the hands’ timekeeping mechanism. In calibre 9801 MC, Cartier places the components receiving energy, transmitting it and regulating the movement within the skeletonized rotor itself. The time display sits at the center without an obvious visual connection to the surrounding mechanism.
Because the rotor turns, the hands would otherwise appear to travel with it. A central differential separates the rotation of the mass from the motion needed to indicate the time. That arrangement lets the hands remain legible while the mechanism revolves around them. Cartier describes the effect on its undated official movement page: “On the Masse Mystérieuse watch, the hands float in the case.” The phrase captures the appearance, not a literal absence of mechanical support.
What is the platinum WHRO0082?
Cartier’s Singapore product listing identifies reference WHRO0082 as a mechanical automatic skeleton watch with a platinum case and dial, sapphire crystal and case back, and two alligator straps. Keep those attributes attached to this reference: Cartier’s separate Swiss page for reference CRWHRO0096 describes a rhodiumized white-gold variant and lists different dial and strap details.

The Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie’s undated technical profile gives the platinum version a 43.5 mm case diameter and 12.64 mm case thickness. It lists a movement diameter of 39.6 mm, movement thickness of 7.3 mm, 43 jewels and approximately 42 hours of power reserve. These figures describe the platinum model in that profile, not necessarily every Masse Mystérieuse reference.

What makes the movement notable?
Cartier says calibre 9801 MC took eight years to develop on its undated official movement page. Its defining feature is not simply an openworked appearance: the architecture makes the rotor part of the visible timekeeping mechanism, then uses a differential to prevent the rotating mass from carrying the displayed time around with it. The result is a watch in which the automatic winding assembly and the central hands share an unusually integrated visual and mechanical arrangement.

How limited is the platinum version?
The Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie lists the platinum model as a 30-piece limited edition. That is the edition size, not evidence that 30 examples remain available or that a particular watch is currently for sale. Inventory and resale availability are separate questions that require checking against a specific seller and dated listing.
What is the listed price, and what should buyers verify?
Cartier’s India product page displays INR 36,700,000 for its listing. This is a regional figure observed on that page, not a universal price or confirmation of a current offer; listed prices and availability can change. The available product pages do not establish current stock.
