Citizen Promaster Mechanical Diver 200M vs. Seiko Prospex SPB143: Which Should You Buy?

The Citizen Promaster NB6021 brings a titanium case and a published magnetic-resistance claim; the Seiko SPB143 offers a longer stated reserve and detailed fit dimensions. Both are rated for 200 m diving.

Choose the Citizen Promaster Mechanical Diver 200M if Super Titanium, a published magnetic-resistance specification, or one of its two strap configurations matters most. Choose the Seiko Prospex SPB143 if you value its longer stated power reserve, slightly smaller diameter, or bracelet with an extension clasp. Both are manufacturer-rated for 200 m diving; these are specification-based differences, not results from hands-on testing.

At a glance: Citizen vs. Seiko

Specifications are from Citizen’s July 26, 2022 Japanese announcement and Seiko’s U.S. SPB143 product page. Seiko’s product-page publication date is not stated.

Which one is better for your priorities?

Choose the Citizen for titanium and a published magnetic-resistance claim

The Citizen’s Super Titanium case, treated with Duratect Titanium Carbide, is the clearest material distinction. Citizen also specifically says the Cal. 9051 meets JIS Class 2 magnetic resistance (16,000 A/m) and maintains performance when brought within 1 cm of magnetic-emitting devices. That is the manufacturer’s claim, not an independent test result. The reviewed Seiko page does not provide a directly comparable magnetic-resistance specification; that absence does not establish that the Seiko has no magnetic resistance.

Choose the Seiko for a longer stated reserve and smaller diameter

Seiko lists approximately 70 hours of power reserve for the SPB143’s Cal. 6R35, compared with Citizen’s approximately 42 hours for the Cal. 9051. These are manufacturer figures, not side-by-side measurements. The Seiko is 40.5 mm across, 0.5 mm smaller than the Citizen, but it is also listed as 13.2 mm thick versus Citizen’s 12.3 mm. Seiko publishes a 47.6 mm lug-to-lug measurement; Citizen’s cited announcement does not give one. No wrist-fit test was conducted, so those dimensions are useful comparison points rather than a guarantee of how either watch will wear.

Choose by the exact strap or bracelet configuration

“Citizen NB6021” covers two configurations in the official announcement. NB6021-17E pairs the Super Titanium case with a urethane strap; NB6021-68L pairs it with a Super Titanium bracelet. The SPB143 is listed with a bracelet whose clasp has a secure lock and extension. Check the full reference before buying: the two Citizen versions are not interchangeable descriptions of one stock configuration.

Movement, accuracy, and daily use

Both movements are automatic and support manual winding, and both specifications list 24 jewels and stop-seconds. Citizen lists the Cal. 9051 at 28,800 vibrations per hour, with a calendar and hacking seconds. Seiko lists the Cal. 6R35 with date and stop-seconds. The published accuracy ranges are not directly comparable test results: Citizen gives an average daily accuracy of −10 to +20 seconds, while Seiko specifies +25 to −15 seconds per day. Actual performance can vary by individual watch and conditions.

The longer Seiko reserve means, on the stated figures, more time off the wrist before the movement stops. Neither figure should be read as an independent measurement of a particular watch. If reserve and accuracy are deciding factors, treat the listed numbers as manufacturer specifications rather than a promise of your sample’s performance.

Are both suitable for diving?

Both manufacturers state 200 m diver water resistance for these models. Citizen says the Promaster complies with ISO standards for 200 m diver water resistance; Seiko lists 200 m / 660 ft diver’s water resistance. Each has a unidirectional rotating bezel and a screw-down crown. Citizen lists a screw-lock crown; Seiko also lists a screw case back. These ratings describe the manufacturers’ specifications, not a substitute for keeping a watch maintained and its seals in serviceable condition.

Price and availability: verify the exact reference

Citizen’s Japanese announcement, dated July 26, 2022, listed launch suggested retail prices of ¥96,800 for NB6021-17E and ¥121,000 for NB6021-68L, with both models scheduled to go on sale August 19, 2022. Those are historical Japan launch prices, not current prices or a guide to availability in another region. The cited Seiko U.S. page provides no dependable current price in the available information. Verdict

The Citizen is the more distinctive pick if titanium and its explicitly stated magnetic-resistance rating are your priorities, especially if you want to choose between a urethane strap and titanium bracelet. The Seiko makes the stronger case for a longer stated power reserve and publishes more fit dimensions, including lug-to-lug. If neither distinction settles it, try both on if possible and compare current local prices for the exact references rather than relying on historic launch pricing.

Design background

Citizen describes the Promaster’s design as a continuation of its 1977 Challenge Diver. The company’s account says an earlier Challenge Diver was found off Long Reef Beach, Australia, in 1983, still running and encrusted with barnacles. This is Citizen’s product-history account, not an independently verified comparison of the two watches.
