Short answer: the claim is not confirmed. Samsung’s One UI Watch 5 update brought Wear OS 4 and several health, sleep, workout, watch-face, and usability improvements to supported Galaxy Watches. However, Samsung’s One UI Watch 5 materials and current Galaxy Watch compatibility documentation do not document Google’s Watch Unlock feature for the Galaxy Watch 4 or Galaxy Watch 5.
Google’s official documentation describes Watch Unlock as a feature for a Google Pixel Watch paired with a compatible Google Pixel phone. That makes the headline “One UI Watch 5 brings support for Watch Unlock” misleading when applied to Samsung’s watches.

Samsung’s announcement does not list Watch Unlock among the One UI Watch 5 features. Availability can also vary by watch model, market, carrier, and paired smartphone. See Samsung’s One UI Watch 5 rollout announcement for the documented feature list.
What Google Watch Unlock does
Watch Unlock is a phone-security feature that lets a nearby, already-unlocked smartwatch help unlock a phone when face or fingerprint recognition is unavailable. In Google’s documented implementation, the watch must be:
- Unlocked with a watch passcode
- Worn on the user’s wrist
- Close to the phone
- Paired with the phone over Bluetooth
- Running current software
The phone must also have a secure lock method, such as a passcode or biometric unlock. When the conditions are met, the user can generally swipe up on the lock screen or tap a notification to unlock the phone. The exact screen behavior can vary with settings such as whether Skip lock screen is enabled.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteGoogle positions Watch Unlock as a convenience and fallback mechanism, not a replacement for the phone’s primary passcode or biometric security. The phone may periodically require the user to authenticate normally. Google says setup can take 24–48 hours, and the phone must be unlocked with a passcode or biometric method at least once per day to keep Watch Unlock active.
Read Google’s current Watch Unlock requirements and troubleshooting guide for the complete conditions.
Does One UI Watch 5 enable Watch Unlock on Galaxy Watch 4 or Watch 5?
The official documentation reviewed does not confirm it. That is more precise than claiming that Samsung has definitively never supported the feature in every combination of watch, phone, software version, and region.

- Material: This band is made of durable double-layer nylon weave and the nylon fabric is crafted from cotton woven material which is exceptionally soft and light, making comfortable to wear.
- Band Width (Size): Standard 16mm, 18mm, 19mm, 20mm, 21mm, 22mm, 24mm. This watch band is compatible with all watches (including smart watches) with above band width. To determine the right size, use a ruler measure the interior distance between the two lugs on the watch case.
- Adjustable: Fit wrist 14.5cm-22cm (5.7-8.6 inches). Adopt an durable Hook and Loop closure which can be cycled (opened and closed) thousands of times, allowing the watch to be fastened or adjusted in seconds.
- Quick Release Design: Quick release spring bars allow you to easily install and remove the watch band without tools. You just need to slide quick release knob with finger.
- Washable: This one-piece strap can be washed when it gets dirty because its color is a permanent ink that will not fade. Ideal for sports and everyday use.
There are three relevant points:
- Samsung’s official One UI Watch 5 announcement does not identify Watch Unlock as an update feature.
- Samsung’s current Galaxy Watch setup and compatibility documentation does not identify Galaxy Watch 4 or Watch 5 as devices supported by Google Watch Unlock.
- Google’s official Watch Unlock support page documents the feature for Pixel Watch-to-Pixel-phone use, not Galaxy Watch-to-Galaxy-phone use.
Therefore, Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 5 owners should not assume that installing One UI Watch 5 or Wear OS 4 will add a Watch Unlock menu or allow the watch to unlock a Samsung Galaxy phone.

For the Google implementation described in the support documentation, the supported combination is:
| Device | Documented requirement |
|---|---|
| Watch | Google Pixel Watch with a passcode and current Wear OS software |
| Phone | Google Pixel 4a or later running Android 13 or newer |
| Connection | Active Bluetooth pairing and close proximity |
| Security state | The watch must be unlocked and worn; the phone must have a passcode or biometric method |
Google’s cited support page does not document Watch Unlock for Galaxy Watch 4, Galaxy Watch 5, Samsung Galaxy phones, tablets, or iPhones. It also says that other device types, including tablets, cannot be unlocked with Watch Unlock in this implementation.
This is separate from general Galaxy Watch compatibility. Samsung says Wear OS-based Galaxy Watches require a compatible Android phone, the Galaxy Wearable app, Android 6.0 or later, at least 1.5 GB of RAM, and Google Mobile Services as general requirements. Those requirements establish pairing compatibility; they do not establish Watch Unlock support. Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 5 models are not compatible with iOS. Samsung’s details are available in its Galaxy Watch compatibility guide.

Why Watch Unlock may not work
If you are using the documented Pixel combination, check these conditions before treating the feature as broken:
- The watch is too far away: Watch Unlock depends on proximity.
- Bluetooth is disconnected: Reconnect the watch and phone, then authenticate again if requested.
- The watch is locked: Unlock it while wearing it.
- The watch is not being worn: Wrist presence is part of the security model.
- Software is outdated: Google requires current watch software.
- The phone has no secure lock: Set a passcode or biometric method first.
- A managed Google Workspace account is active: An organization’s policy may block the feature.
- Extend Unlock is enabled: Google says Watch Unlock and Extend Unlock cannot be used at the same time.
- Another watch is enrolled: Google documents one enrolled watch at a time.
- The watch passcode is forgotten: Use Google’s recovery instructions; resetting or recovering the watch may be required.
If you are trying to use a Galaxy Watch 4 or 5, an absent Watch Unlock setting is not necessarily a setup mistake. It is consistent with the fact that the official Google and Samsung documentation reviewed here does not confirm that device combination.
Watch Unlock versus Samsung Smart Lock and Android Extend Unlock
Several Android security features sound similar but are not interchangeable.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

| Feature | What it does | What the cited documentation establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Google Watch Unlock | Uses a supported, nearby, unlocked smartwatch to help unlock a phone when biometric or face authentication is unavailable. | Officially documented for Pixel Watch and compatible Pixel phones. |
| Android Extend Unlock / older Smart Lock behavior | Can keep a phone unlocked under selected trusted conditions, such as a connected Bluetooth device or trusted location. | Samsung has described connected Galaxy-watch Smart Lock behavior. |
| Watch PIN or screen lock | Unlocks the watch itself. | Separate from unlocking the phone. |
| Samsung Wallet security | Protects payment functions and may require separate authentication. | Separate security rules apply. |
Samsung previously described Smart Lock as allowing a Galaxy phone to remain unlocked when connected to a Galaxy smartwatch or under other trusted conditions. That does not prove support for Google’s later, explicitly named Watch Unlock system. The earlier Samsung guidance is available in this Galaxy wearables security and usability overview.
Do not label a trusted-device or Smart Lock setting as Watch Unlock simply because both involve a wearable and a phone. Their setup processes, behavior, and security models differ.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What Galaxy Watch 4 and 5 owners should do
- Check the phone’s security settings for an explicitly named Watch Unlock option.
- Confirm the watch and phone software are current and that the watch is paired through Galaxy Wearable.
- Do not confuse Smart Lock or Extend Unlock with Google Watch Unlock.
- Do not factory-reset or sideload software solely to chase an unverified feature.
- Use native biometrics or a passcode if no supported Watch Unlock option appears.
A Galaxy Watch can work with a range of Android phones for general watch functions, but feature support is not uniform across brands, models, carriers, markets, or software versions. LTE capability does not establish Watch Unlock support either: cellular connectivity and phone-unlock compatibility are separate issues.

If Watch Unlock is your main reason for buying a watch
The most defensible officially documented route is a compatible Google Pixel phone—Google specifies Pixel 4a or later with Android 13 or newer—paired with a Google Pixel Watch. Check Google’s current requirements before purchasing because device and software support can change.
Buying a Galaxy Watch 4 or Watch 5 solely because One UI Watch 5 supposedly adds Watch Unlock is a poor fit for that goal. Those watches remain relevant to Galaxy users for their broader health, fitness, notification, and Wear OS features, but the cited official sources do not verify them as Watch Unlock devices.
There is also a convenience trade-off. Watch Unlock relies on proximity, Bluetooth, an unlocked watch, wearing detection, and periodic phone authentication. Google notes that turning it off can extend Pixel Watch battery life. It should be treated as a fallback convenience feature rather than a stronger replacement for a fingerprint, face unlock, or passcode.
Why the confusion happened
Google announced a broader plan for smartwatch-assisted Android device unlocking in January 2022, saying that a paired Wear OS smartwatch would eventually be able to unlock an Android phone or tablet. That was a forward-looking platform announcement, not confirmation that every Wear OS watch would receive the feature.
One UI Watch 5 then arrived in 2023 around the same broad Wear OS 4 transition. Because Samsung’s software layer and Google’s operating-system platform are related, some coverage treated a general Wear OS announcement as universal support. They are not the same thing: One UI Watch 5 is Samsung’s watch interface and feature layer, while Wear OS 4 is the underlying Google wearable platform version.
