What Samsung actually distributed
Samsung announced the Relumino Glass pilot on March 6, 2023. According to Samsung’s Korean Newsroom and its Samsung Research announcement, about 30 Relumino Glass units were supplied free of charge for pilot-use evaluation.
The program involved the Gyeonggi Welfare Center for the Visually Handicapped and actor and director Song Seung-hwan, whom Samsung identified as an early user. The purpose was to assess usability and suitability before any wider distribution—not to offer free glasses to every visually impaired person in Korea.

On April 5, 2023, the Gyeonggi Provincial Government reported that 30 devices had been delivered and that 28 people with low vision would receive them through the initial program. The two figures describe different parts of the same pilot: the number of devices delivered and the number of initial participants.
How Relumino Glass works
Relumino Glass is a visual-enhancement system rather than ordinary prescription eyewear. Its basic signal path is:
Scene → glasses camera → smartphone processing → glasses display
- A camera mounted on the glasses captures the scene in front of the wearer.
- A smartphone connected by USB processes the camera image.
- The system modifies the image to emphasize useful visual information.
- The processed image appears on a display built into the glasses.
Samsung described features including edge or outline enhancement, magnification and reduction, color inversion, contrast adjustment, and personalized settings. These tools are intended to make boundaries, objects, faces, or other details easier to distinguish for someone who still has usable residual vision.
The system manipulates the image; it does not repair the eye or restore normal sight. A camera-and-display wearable can also introduce compromises such as processing delay, a restricted field of view, unnatural-looking images, cable dependence, and battery demands.
Who might benefit?
Relumino Glass was designed for people with low vision, not as a universal device for blindness. Potential users may include people who retain some sight but struggle with:

- Blurred or low-contrast detail
- Recognizing object boundaries or faces
- Distinguishing objects in cluttered scenes
- Seeing information that may become clearer through magnification or contrast changes
Results will vary widely according to diagnosis, visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, visual field, glare sensitivity, lighting conditions, and tolerance for a head-mounted display. Samsung has referred broadly to visually impaired people with residual vision—sometimes citing an approximately 90% figure—but that should not be read as a guarantee that 90% of users will benefit.
A low-vision specialist should assess whether image enhancement is likely to help. The glasses should not be treated as a replacement for prescription eyewear, a white cane, a guide dog, human assistance, orientation and mobility training, or clinical care. Assistance with recognizing an object indoors is not the same as safe outdoor navigation or obstacle avoidance.
What evidence did Samsung report?
Samsung said it worked with Samsung Medical Center on clinical trials and that safety had been verified. It also said evaluations with visually impaired users compared Relumino with existing commercial products on performance, usability, and fatigue.
Those are claims reported by Samsung, not an independent medical endorsement. The publicly described materials do not provide enough methodological detail to judge the Glass-specific evidence independently. They do not clearly establish the relevant sample size, study design, comparator products, duration of use, diagnoses represented, statistical significance, or peer-review status.
That distinction matters. A pilot involving real users is more substantial than a laboratory demonstration, but it does not prove that the device works equally well for every form of low vision.
Was the program a national giveaway?
No. The documented program was limited in scale and tied to a welfare institution and selected participants. There is no evidence in the cited announcements that every visually impaired person in Korea could request a pair, that Samsung operated a nationwide application scheme, or that the company announced unrestricted public distribution.

Descriptions such as “Samsung gave free glasses to the visually impaired in Korea” are therefore incomplete. The accurate version is that Samsung supplied approximately 30 Relumino Glass units for a Korean pilot, with 28 initial low-vision participants reported by Gyeonggi Province.
Can people buy or apply for Relumino Glass now?
The official sources cited for the 2023 pilot do not establish a current public order page, standard retail price, application form, nationwide eligibility program, confirmed shipping schedule, or consumer support channel for Relumino Glass.
Readers should not assume that a 2023 pilot announcement means the glasses are currently sold or available on request. Anyone investigating access should contact Samsung Korea, a local disability welfare center, or a low-vision rehabilitation provider and ask specifically about current availability, compatibility, support, repairs, and evaluation opportunities.
Be particularly cautious with used or imported listings. A pilot device may depend on older smartphone hardware or software, and the original setup may no longer be supported. Before buying, a seller would need to demonstrate authentic hardware, working software, compatible phones, replacement-part availability, warranty coverage, and a meaningful return policy.

Samsung later focused on Relumino Mode for televisions, which applies related image-enhancement ideas directly to a TV. This avoids requiring the viewer to wear glasses and connect them to a smartphone, but it serves a narrower purpose: improving television viewing rather than providing general-purpose visual assistance in the world.
Samsung’s sustainability history says it conducted two-stage clinical testing of the TV mode involving 67 people with low vision in Korea between April and November 2022. That figure applies to Relumino Mode for TVs, not automatically to the Relumino Glass pilot.

TV availability depends on model, year, market, and software support. Samsung’s official Korean business and product information is a better starting point than assuming every Samsung television includes the feature.

If Relumino Glass cannot be obtained, the most appropriate alternative depends on the user’s visual goals:
- Electronic video magnifiers: Handheld or desktop devices can provide magnification without a smartphone-and-wearable arrangement, though they may be expensive or less portable.
- Accessibility settings: Phones, tablets, computers, and televisions commonly offer screen magnification, larger text, contrast controls, and color adjustments. These are generally easier to trial but less specialized.
- Television-based assistance: A compatible Samsung TV with Relumino Mode may help with watching television, but it is not a substitute for a general visual aid.
- Low-vision rehabilitation: Specialist assessment can identify useful magnification levels, lighting changes, contrast strategies, and safe-use limitations before a major purchase.
Historical references to the Relumino app should also be treated carefully. Samsung previously described a free Gear VR-related app, but that does not establish current compatibility or support for today’s phones and headsets.
The accurate takeaway
Relumino Glass was a genuine Samsung accessibility project with documented free distribution in South Korea. In 2023, Samsung supplied approximately 30 units for pilot evaluation, while Gyeonggi Province reported 28 initial low-vision recipients.
It was not a public giveaway for all visually impaired people in Korea, and the cited official material does not confirm a current retail product or open application route.
