Short answer: I would not rely on an Oura Ring alone for birth control. The ring is a wearable sensor, not a contraceptive. The birth-control system is Natural Cycles, an FDA-cleared contraceptive app, using temperature-trend data collected by Oura.
This can be a practical hormone-free option for adults who can consistently wear, charge, and sync the ring—and who will abstain or use condoms on every Red Day. It is less suitable for anyone who cannot accept a meaningful pregnancy risk or reliably follow those rules.

What you are actually buying
There are three separate products to distinguish:
- Oura Ring: wearable hardware that collects biometric signals, including overnight temperature trends. It is also designed for sleep, activity, recovery, and wellness tracking.
- Oura Cycle Insights: a cycle-awareness feature. It should not be presented as an FDA-cleared contraceptive.
- Natural Cycles NC° Birth Control: the separate app that analyzes temperature and cycle information and displays daily fertility guidance. The FDA-cleared contraceptive software is Natural Cycles—not Oura’s ordinary cycle features.
Oura directs users seeking contraception to its Natural Cycles integration.
How the Oura-Natural Cycles system works
- Wear the ring overnight.
- Sync it with the Oura app in the morning.
- Allow the temperature-trend information to transfer to Natural Cycles.
- Open Natural Cycles and check that day’s fertility status.
- On a Red Day, abstain or use a barrier method such as a condom.
Oura collects temperature-trend information during sleep. Natural Cycles processes that information into the temperature value used by its algorithm. This is not identical to taking an oral basal-body-temperature reading, and the ring should not be described as diagnosing ovulation in real time. Temperature generally rises after ovulation, so this remains a predictive, rules-based fertility-awareness system—not an instant fertility detector.

The integration is primarily one-way. With consent, Oura says information shared with Natural Cycles can include temperature trends, heart rate, sleep length, and sleep stages; Natural Cycles does not send sensitive fertility data back to Oura. Review both companies’ policies, including Oura’s privacy policy, before connecting the accounts.
Green Days and Red Days
Green Days are days Natural Cycles predicts a lower pregnancy risk and permits unprotected sex under its rules. They are not a guarantee and should not be called “safe days.”
Red Days mean you should use protection or abstain. The user—not the app—must make the final decision about sex and contraception. If your partner will not use condoms on Red Days, the system may not fit your relationship in practice.

Effectiveness: the number that matters most

These are contraceptive-effectiveness figures, not sensor-accuracy scores and not guarantees for an individual cycle. The 93% typical-use figure is essential: this method depends on behavior when the app says protection is required. It also does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.
The FDA clearance labeling warns of higher pregnancy risk when Natural Cycles is started within 60 days of stopping hormonal birth control than among users who had not used hormonal contraception within the previous 12 months.
The daily responsibility is the real review
Oura removes the inconvenience of manually taking a temperature at the same time each morning, but it does not make contraception automatic. You still need to:

- Keep it charged and sync it regularly.
- Check Natural Cycles rather than relying on a calendar prediction.
- Log period information and other events when the app asks.
- Use condoms or abstain on Red Days.
Travel, illness, poor sleep, late nights, shift work, and a dead battery can make the data less useful or produce additional Red Days. A missed night or forgotten sync does not mean you should assume a Green Day; follow Natural Cycles’ instructions and use backup protection when directed.

Frequent Red Days can also become a relationship and lifestyle issue. They may reduce spontaneity, require advance planning, or cause frustration—especially during the initial learning period or when data quality is poor.
What happens after hormonal birth control?
Hormonal contraception can affect temperature patterns and cycle regularity. Starting Natural Cycles immediately after stopping the pill, patch, ring, injection, implant, or hormonal IUD therefore deserves particular caution. The FDA labeling specifically identifies increased pregnancy risk within 60 days of stopping hormonal birth control.
Do not assume the app instantly understands a newly changing cycle. If avoiding pregnancy is especially important during this transition, discuss backup contraception with a qualified clinician and follow the current Natural Cycles guidance rather than improvising a waiting period.

Oura Ring 4 as contraception hardware
Oura’s current Ring 4 information lists sizes 4–15, approximately five to eight days of battery life depending on size, settings, use, and battery age, and typical charging times of about 20–80 minutes. It is water-resistant to 100 meters/328 feet but is not intended for diving. Its relevant hardware includes a digital temperature sensor and accelerometer.

Battery life matters here for more than convenience. A ring that dies overnight, is left behind while traveling, or is not synced can lead to missing data and potentially more restrictive guidance. Gen2, Gen3, and later rings are listed as compatible with the integration on iOS and Android; Gen3 and later require active Oura Membership.

The setup is not simply “buy an Oura Ring.” It is:
Ring hardware + Oura Membership + Natural Cycles subscription.
- Oura Ring: official pages show prices varying by model, size, style, and finish. Recent US price signals range from about $249 to $499, while the Ring 4 page advertises a starting price of $349.
- Oura Membership: $5.99 monthly or $69.99 annually in the US. New ring purchasers receive one included month.
- Natural Cycles: $149.99 annually or $21.99 monthly on the cited US partnership page.
Using the $349 starting hardware price and annual subscriptions, the first year is roughly $568.98 before tax, unless a promotion or trial changes the total. At the cited $249–$499 hardware range, the comparable total is approximately $468.98–$718.98. Verify checkout pricing, taxes, renewal terms, discounts, and HSA/FSA eligibility because these vary by product, plan, geography, and promotion. A 28-day Natural Cycles trial may be available to eligible new users, and annual plans may renew automatically.

If you return the ring, cancel Oura Membership separately; returning hardware does not necessarily cancel subscriptions.
Who should think twice?
Seek medical guidance before choosing this system if you recently stopped hormonal contraception, have highly irregular or changing cycles, are postpartum or breastfeeding, are perimenopausal, are undergoing fertility treatment, take medication or hormones that affect temperature, or have a condition for which pregnancy could pose a significant risk.
The FDA labeling says Natural Cycles may not be appropriate when pregnancy would pose a significant risk to the mother or fetus. Irregular cycles, PCOS, endometriosis, thyroid conditions, or breastfeeding should not automatically be treated as disqualifying, but they are reasons to check eligibility guidance carefully and consider clinician input.
I would also reject it if I could not reliably accept Red Days, keep condoms available, or tolerate the possibility of an unintended pregnancy. Hormone-free does not mean risk-free.

Natural Cycles documentation and FDA records also identify automatic temperature input from compatible wearables, including Oura and Apple Watch in relevant clearances. Check current compatibility before buying another device.
My bottom line
I’d view Oura as a convenient data-collection tool, not as birth control. The contraceptive decision comes from Natural Cycles’ status and from what you do on Red Days. For someone already interested in Oura’s sleep and recovery features, comfortable with subscriptions, and able to follow the method consistently, the combination may be worth considering. If avoiding pregnancy is a top priority, daily rules are difficult to maintain, or pregnancy would carry serious medical consequences, a clinician-discussed method with less user dependence may be the safer choice.
