The quickest way to change your Apple Watch face is to touch and hold the current face, swipe left or right to a saved face, then tap it. If you want to use a face that is not saved, add it first from the watch or from the Face Gallery in the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.
These instructions follow the current watchOS 26 user guide. Options can differ by Apple Watch model, watchOS version, country or region, and paired iPhone software.

Change the face directly on your Apple Watch
- Wake the watch and display the current watch face.
- Touch and hold the display. Do not press the Digital Crown.
- Swipe left or right through the faces in your collection.
- Tap the face you want to use.
This carousel contains only faces you have already added. If the face you want is missing, add it using one of the methods below.
Switch faces with a normal swipe
Direct swiping may not be enabled automatically. On the watch, go to Settings → Clock, then turn on Swipe to Switch Watch Face. You can then swipe left or right from the current watch face to move between saved faces.

Face Gallery groupings and labels can change with watchOS updates. In watchOS 26, Apple added faces including Flow, Exactograph, and Pride Harmony, and redesigned some Face Gallery groupings.
Customize the current watch face
- Touch and hold the current face.
- Tap Edit.

- Adjust options such as color, style, dial, typography, or background.
- If the face supports complications, swipe to the complication screen.

- Press the Digital Crown to save, then tap the face to activate it.
Each face has its own controls. Some offer multiple layouts or colors, while others have fewer options. Not every face supports complications, and a face may support only certain complication positions.
What are complications?
Complications are the small information areas or shortcuts displayed on a watch face. Depending on the face and installed apps, they can show Activity, Weather, Calendar, Battery, Heart Rate, Timers, Workout, Music, Maps, Reminders, or third-party app data. Availability depends on the selected face, position, app, watch model, and software.

Use a photo as your Apple Watch face
Set up a Photos face from iPhone
- Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.
- Tap Face Gallery, then tap Photos.
- Choose a style.
- Select photos manually, shuffle an album, or use available featured people, places, pets, or cities.
- Adjust the layout and complications.
- Tap Add.
Under Apple’s current Photos-face instructions, manual selection can include up to 24 photos. A shuffled collection or library automatically selects 16 photos to display each day. With shuffled photos, the face may change images rather than remain on one permanent picture.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCreate a face from a photo on the watch
- Open the Photos app on the Apple Watch.
- Open an album and select a photo.
- Tap the Action button.
- Scroll down and tap Create Watch Face.
- Tap Photos.
If expected images do not appear, check that they are in an album synchronized to the watch and confirm that you added the intended Photos-face configuration.

- Drag it left or right to change its position.
Creating multiple versions of the same design can be useful: for example, a work version with Calendar and Reminders, a workout version with Workout and Heart Rate, or a minimalist version with no complications.

Delete a saved face
On Apple Watch
- Touch and hold the current face.
- Swipe to the face you want to remove.
- Swipe up on that face.
- Tap Remove.
On iPhone
- Open Apple Watch → My Watch.
- In the My Faces area, tap Edit.
- Tap the delete button beside the face.
- Tap Remove.
You can add a deleted face again later.
Share an Apple Watch face
On iPhone, open the face from your collection or Face Gallery, tap the Share button, and choose a sharing method. The recipient’s Apple Watch must run watchOS 7 or later. If the face uses a third-party complication, the recipient may need to download the associated app or continue without that complication.
A shared face can therefore look different on another watch if the recipient has a different model, software version, region, or installed apps.

Swiping does nothing
- Make sure you are starting from the watch face, not from inside an app.
- Try touching and holding the display, then choose a face from the picker.
- Confirm that more than one face has been added to your collection.
- For direct swiping, check Settings → Clock → Swipe to Switch Watch Face.
- Check whether the display is locked, wet, obstructed, or failing to recognize touch.
- Restart or update the Apple Watch if the picker remains unresponsive.
The Edit button is missing
Touch and hold the current face while you are on the face itself. If you are viewing an app, or have not held the display long enough, the face-editing controls will not appear. Older watchOS versions may also use different gestures or labels.

A face is not in the gallery
Face availability varies by Apple Watch model, watchOS version, country or region, and software release. Update the watch before assuming a face is unavailable, and check the relevant category in Face Gallery. Apple’s compatibility guide gives model-specific limitations; for example, Contour and Modular Duo are listed as unavailable on Apple Watch SE and Apple Watch Series 6.
A complication is missing
Not every face supports complications, and not every complication fits every position. Some also require the associated app. Try another position, select from the options available with the Digital Crown, or choose a face with more suitable complication support.
The Photos face is blank or shows the wrong images
Confirm that the photos are in a synchronized album, that the correct Photos face was added, and that you are not using a shuffled setup when you expect one fixed image. For a single picture, create the face directly from the Photos app on the watch.

One setting that changes only the displayed time
Apple Watch can be configured to show the watch-face time up to 59 minutes ahead. This changes only the time displayed on the face; it does not change alarms or notification timestamps. Do not use this setting to correct an incorrectly set system time.
Can you install any watch face?
No. Apple’s documented process is to choose from the available Apple faces and customize them with supported options and complications. For a personal image, use the Photos face. Third-party apps can provide complications, but that is not the same as installing unrestricted third-party replacement face designs.
