The Seiko Presage Cocktail Time GMT reference SSK039J1 uses Calibre 4R34, whose 24-hour hand can be adjusted separately at the crown’s first click. The regular hour hand does not jump independently for travel-time changes: at the second click, the hour and 24-hour hands move together as you set the time.
What “independently adjustable” means on the SSK039J1
Seiko’s UK product sheet identifies the “Presage ‘Rusty Nail’ Cocktail Time GMT” as reference SSK039J1 and lists Calibre 4R34. Seiko calls its second-time-zone indicator a “24-hour hand” and describes the watch as offering dual-time display. In the 4R34 instructions, the first crown click adjusts that hand separately from the regular hour hand.

This is different from a traveler-style arrangement in which the local hour hand can be changed independently. The 4R34 instructions instead say that the hour and 24-hour hands move together when setting the time at the second click. So you can set the GMT hand separately, but the manual does not describe an independently jumping local hour hand.
How to set the 24-hour hand
- Pull the crown out to the first click. The seconds hand continues moving.
- Turn the crown clockwise to move the 24-hour hand to the desired second time zone.
- Push the crown back to its normal position.
For ordinary time setting, pull the crown to the second click; the hour and 24-hour hands move together. Seiko’s instruction is to “set the 24-hour hand” at the first-click stage. If your specific watch has a screw-down crown, use that reference’s instructions to unlock and relock it.

These are the SSK039J1 product-sheet specifications, not specifications for every Cocktail Time reference or every watch using the 4R34. Seiko’s 2022 announcement for the initial Seiko 5 Sports GMT series listed different case dimensions and 10-bar water resistance for that series, so those figures should not be carried over to the Cocktail Time.

Why other 4R34 figures should not be mistaken for this model’s specs
In its June 8, 2022 announcement of the initial Seiko 5 Sports GMT series, Seiko Watch Corporation listed the 4R34 at 21,600 vibrations per hour, with a 41-hour power reserve and 24 jewels. The same announcement gave that series a 42.5 mm case diameter, 13.6 mm thickness, 10-bar water resistance, and a U.S. launch retail price of $495. The price is historical, and the case and water-resistance figures describe the announced Seiko 5 Sports GMT series—not the SSK039J1.
