He found it weighty but not overbearing, versatile with tailored clothes, and initially fiddly to fasten. His enthusiastic verdict—“This watch nailed it”—was a personal conclusion from that week, not a current buying recommendation.
What stood out about the Drive de Cartier?
In his 3 August 2016 Time+Tide feature, Edwards recalled that “It was the unique shape that struck me the most at first.” He also noticed the case’s softened octagonal form and the small details on the dial.
Among those details, Edwards singled out the engraving and the “secret signature” tucked into the number seven. These were close-up design touches that helped distinguish the watch for him beyond its overall silhouette.
How did it wear on his wrist?
Edwards said the watch felt good on the wrist and had some weight, without feeling overly macho. Although it looked large to him in the box, he felt its proportions worked when he wore it. That is his account of the fit on his wrist, not a guarantee that the case will suit every wearer.

How did Edwards style it?
He felt the watch could work with day-to-day suiting, smart-casual clothes, and formal wear. His standout combination was the steel watch on a black alligator strap with a navy linen suit. He also described it working with an open-neck tan suit.
Those examples reflect Edwards’s own styling preferences. The feature’s captions identify both a steel Drive de Cartier with leather and a pink-gold version with leather; the black alligator strap is the pictured steel configuration he discussed, not a universal strap specification.

What was the clasp like?
The clasp was Edwards’s one early reservation: “I found it tricky to do up initially.” After several days, he said he had got the hang of it. The review does not give further technical detail about the clasp or compare it with other closures.

The article discusses more than one version but does not give full reference numbers or a complete specification list. One caption identifies an 18K pink-gold model with a large date, retrograde second time zone, and day/night indicator. Those complications belong to that captioned example; the feature does not establish that every Drive de Cartier has them.
