Android Headlines reported on August 19, 2025, that Google’s Pixel Watch 4 would abandon the rear charging contacts used by earlier Pixel Watch models in favor of two contacts on the left side of the case. The reported change would require a new charging cradle: Pixel Watch 1, 2, and 3 chargers would reportedly not work with Pixel Watch 4.
The same report claimed roughly 25% faster charging, a sideways charging position that keeps the display visible, and an included dock without a USB-C power adapter. These details were reported before launch and should not be treated as Google-confirmed specifications without official documentation.

Pixel Watch 4 charging: the short version

How the reported charging system works
Earlier Pixel Watch models charge through contacts on the rear of the case. According to the Android Headlines exclusive, Pixel Watch 4 moves those contacts into an indentation on the watch’s left side.
The watch would rest on its side in a purpose-built cradle, allowing the contacts on the watch and dock to meet. This is more accurately described as side-mounted contact charging than wireless charging: the design still relies on physical electrical contacts.

The sideways position could make the watch face easier to see from a desk or nightstand while it charges. It may also provide a more stable resting position than a small puck, although the supplied report does not establish how secure the dock is in everyday use.
Why might Google have moved the contacts?
Android Headlines linked the redesign to a newer rear sensor array. Moving the charging contacts away from the back could leave more room for sensors. The report also suggested that the revised construction may make the back easier for technicians to remove during repairs.
That repairability benefit remains a reported possibility, not a demonstrated result. The available information does not establish repair pricing, parts availability, warranty conditions, or whether Google would offer the same service in every market. “Potentially easier to repair” is more accurate than calling Pixel Watch 4 fully repairable.
Will older Pixel Watch chargers work?
Reportedly, no. If the side-contact design is accurate, Pixel Watch 1, 2, and 3 charging pucks cannot align with Pixel Watch 4’s contacts. This is the most important practical consequence for existing owners.

The incompatibility applies to the watch-side dock, not necessarily to the USB-C power adapter that supplies it. A suitable USB-C adapter could potentially continue to power the new cradle. USB-C alone does not make a third-party charging dock compatible, however: the watch-side contact placement and electrical behavior must also match.
Is charging really 25% faster?
The exclusive reported charging at approximately 25% faster than previous-generation Pixel Watch charging. That should be treated as a pre-launch claim rather than an independently verified result.
The report did not specify:
- the starting and ending battery percentages;
- whether the comparison applies to both reported case sizes;
- which adapter and cable were used;
- the watch temperature during testing;
- whether the figure describes a full charge or a partial top-up; or
- whether the number came from Google or a leak source.
A “25% faster” claim also does not provide a fixed number of minutes. The result depends on the earlier charging time and the test conditions. It should not be rewritten as “25% less time” without a measured charging comparison.

The report said Google would include the new charging dock but omit a USB-C power adapter. It also said a 5W USB-C adapter should be enough to power the dock.

That packaging information should be checked against the final regional retail box. Contents can vary by country, LTE or Wi-Fi configuration, promotional bundle, and later manufacturing revision. Buyers should confirm the exact package for their market rather than assume every Pixel Watch 4 box is identical.
Will Google sell a replacement dock?
Android Headlines expected Google to sell the dock separately through the Google Store, but pricing was not known in the report. It estimated a price of at least $29.99 by referring to the reported price of the Pixel Watch 3 charger.
That is an estimate, not a confirmed Pixel Watch 4 accessory price. Until Google lists the accessory, buyers should not treat $29.99 as current pricing or assume that an older replacement puck is a cheaper substitute.

What current Pixel Watch owners should do
Pixel Watch 3 owners
Assume that existing charging pucks may not carry over if the reported design is correct. If you own several chargers for travel, work, and home, factor in the cost and availability of additional Pixel Watch 4 docks before upgrading.
First-time Pixel Watch buyers
The accessory break is less significant if you do not already own a charger. Confirm the watch’s regional box contents, whether the dock is included, and whether you already have a suitable USB-C adapter.
Frequent travelers
Check whether the dock packs flat, whether it includes the necessary USB-C cable, and whether a spare dock is available. The adapter may not need replacing, but the watch-specific cradle does.

Do not assume every protective case will work. Look for clearance around the left-side indentation, ensure the case does not cover the contacts, and confirm that the watch can sit flush in the cradle.

Troubleshooting a charging failure
If a reported Pixel Watch 4 dock does not charge the watch, try these general checks:
- Remove the case or bumper.
- Clean and dry the watch contacts and dock contacts.
- Re-seat the watch so the left-side contacts align with the cradle.
- Try another USB-C cable and a known-good adapter.

Should the charging redesign affect your buying decision?
For new buyers, the reported system could be a meaningful convenience if faster top-ups and a visible charging display matter. For existing Pixel Watch owners, the more important issue is the accessory break: according to the exclusive, upgrading to Pixel Watch 4 means replacing the watch-side charger even if an existing USB-C power adapter remains useful.
The redesign therefore appears to trade charger continuity for possible improvements in charging speed, tabletop visibility, sensor layout, and service access. Until Google confirms the final specifications and accessory details, treat the side contacts, incompatibility warning, 25% figure, and box contents as reported pre-launch information rather than settled product facts.
