Seiko’s SRPL83, SRPL85, SRPL87 and SRPL89 update the 5 Sports SKX-style formula without recreating the discontinued SKX007 or SKX009. The four watches retain the familiar 42.5 mm case, automatic 4R36 movement, Hardlex crystal and 100 m water resistance, but introduce a more distinctive bezel, rectangular applied markers, revised hands and—on two models—a new rounded-link steel bracelet.
They are best understood as design-forward, dive-inspired sports watches rather than professional dive watches. In the U.S. catalog, the steel-bracelet SRPL83 and SRPL85 list for $450, while the silicone-strap SRPL87 and SRPL89 list for $400.
What Seiko launched
The new SKX-series quartet divides neatly into two styles:
| Reference | Dial and bezel | Strap or bracelet | U.S. list price | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SRPL83 | Blue sunray dial and blue bezel | Stainless-steel bracelet | $450 | A versatile blue sports-watch look |
| SRPL85 | Black dial with gray-and-black bezel treatment | Stainless-steel bracelet | $450 | A quieter black-and-steel everyday style |
| SRPL87 | Yellow dial and black bezel | Black silicone strap | $400 | A bright, playful retro-sporting watch |
| SRPL89 | Orange dial, black bezel and gold-toned details | Black silicone strap | $400 | The boldest vintage-inspired colorway |
Seiko announced the watches in 2025, with specialist reporting placing availability in June 2025. As of August 12, 2026, all four remain listed in Seiko’s U.S. SKX-series catalog. Catalog inclusion does not guarantee that every retailer has every reference in stock, and prices can vary outside the United States or during retailer promotions.

What is new compared with earlier SKX-inspired 5 Sports models?
A more unusual bezel
The most obvious revision is the bezel insert. Rather than using the conventional metal-style appearance seen on many earlier SKX-inspired 5 Sports watches, these models use a glossy glass/Hardlex insert with the 60-minute scale printed on the underside. That treatment gives the bezel a different visual depth and a cleaner, more reflective appearance.
#1 Best Overall
The dial opening is also visually larger, making the bezel ring appear narrower. This changes the proportions without changing the basic case diameter. The bezel remains unidirectional, as expected from the dive-inspired design language.
Rectangular markers replace the older mixed-marker layout
Earlier SKX-style 5 Sports models commonly combine round and oval hour markers. The SRPL watches take a more structured approach, using rectangular applied markers, a sharper double marker at 12 o’clock and a cross-line interpretation at 3, 6, 9 and 12.
Seiko presents the design as a contemporary expression of its SKX archive, with the SKX007 specifically identified as an inspiration. Specialist coverage has also read the rectangular-marker layout as a nod to the earlier Seiko 7002 diver. That 7002 connection is useful historical context, but it is better described as an interpretation of the design than as Seiko’s claim that these are 7002 reissues.
Reworked hands and more deliberate color
The hands retain the recognizable SKX-inspired character but are more refined. The SRPL83 and SRPL85 use relatively restrained monochrome detailing, while the yellow SRPL87 and orange SRPL89 create stronger contrast between the hands, dial and bezel.
All four references use LumiBrite on the hands and indexes. No independent lume test was performed for this first look, so brightness and duration should not be treated as measured performance results.
A new bracelet for the steel models
The SRPL83 and SRPL85 come on a newly designed three-row stainless-steel bracelet. Its rounded links give the watches a softer, more polished visual character than a conventional angular bracelet, and the folding clasp uses a push-button release.
The SRPL87 and SRPL89 take a different direction with black silicone straps and pin buckles. That configuration lowers the U.S. price by $50 and reinforces the two watches’ more colorful, retro-sporting personalities.

The 4R36 is a familiar Seiko automatic caliber operating at 21,600 vibrations per hour. Seiko specifies approximately 41 hours of power reserve. Specialist coverage reports a caliber accuracy specification of approximately +45/-35 seconds per day; that is a manufacturer range for the movement, not a timing result from an individual SRPL83, SRPL85, SRPL87 or SRPL89.
How large do the SRPL watches wear?
The 42.5 mm diameter and 46 mm lug-to-lug measurement are important buying facts. These watches may feel familiar to SKX fans, but they are not small sports watches. The relatively compact lug-to-lug figure helps keep the case from stretching as far across the wrist as the diameter alone might suggest, while the 13.9 mm thickness gives the watch substantial presence.

Readers who prefer compact watches should try one on before buying. The steel versions will also feel heavier than the silicone models; Seiko lists the SRPL83 at 187 g in its bracelet configuration. The SRPL87 and SRPL89 should be lighter in use because of their silicone straps, although this article does not treat an unmeasured on-wrist difference as a test result.
SRPL83: the most versatile choice
The SRPL83 combines a blue sunray dial, matching blue bezel, applied markers and the new rounded-link steel bracelet. It is the easiest reference to position as an everyday sports watch: colorful enough to avoid looking generic, but restrained enough to work with casual and office clothing.
It is also the most conventional choice for someone who wants the visual identity of the new generation but does not want a bright yellow or orange dial. The trade-off is price: in the U.S., the SRPL83 costs $50 more than the silicone-strap models.
Readers comparing availability can look for the exact model name Seiko 5 Sports SRPL83; retailer stock and pricing should be checked at the time of purchase rather than assumed from the active catalog listing.
SRPL85: the understated alternative
The SRPL85 uses a black dial and a gray-and-black bezel treatment with the same steel bracelet, case, movement and 100 m rating as the SRPL83. It is the least colorful member of the group and therefore the most discreet option.
Choose it if the SRPL83’s blue combination feels too attention-grabbing, or if you want the new bezel and marker design to carry the visual interest. Its $450 U.S. list price places it alongside the SRPL83.
SRPL87: the colorful statement
The SRPL87 pairs a yellow dial with a black bezel and black silicone strap. It is the most immediately playful reference and makes the strongest departure from the conservative blue-and-black configurations.
The silicone strap and pin buckle also give it a more overtly retro-sporting character. It shares the $400 U.S. list price of the SRPL89, making the bright colorway less expensive than either bracelet model.
SRPL89: orange with vintage accents
The SRPL89 uses an orange dial, black silicone strap and gold-toned details around the hands and numerals. Those accents make it the most deliberately vintage-inspired option, although the underlying case and movement remain the same as the other three references.
It is the choice for a buyer who wants the watch to be noticed. If the goal is a flexible daily watch that disappears more easily under a cuff, the SRPL85 is the safer direction; if the goal is color and personality, the SRPL89 delivers that more clearly.

Are the SRPL83, SRPL85, SRPL87 and SRPL89 real dive watches?
No. They are dive-inspired sports watches, not substitutes for Seiko’s purpose-built professional dive watches.
The unidirectional bezel and 100 m water resistance make the design suitable for ordinary water-related activities when the watch is properly maintained and used within its rating. However, the SRPL models use a 10 bar/100 m specification and push-pull crowns, while the classic SKX diver platform is associated with 200 m water resistance and screw-down crowns.
There is also no certification identified in this research that would justify calling these watches ISO-rated dive watches. Use “SKX-inspired,” “dive-inspired” or “sports watch with diver styling,” not “professional diver.” A 100 m rating is not a promise that the watch has the same construction, testing or operational suitability as a dedicated Prospex dive model.
Which SRPL reference should you buy?
- Choose the SRPL83 for the most versatile blue sports-watch appearance and a steel bracelet.
- Choose the SRPL85 for the most restrained black-and-steel everyday look.
- Choose the SRPL87 if you want the brightest color and a yellow dial at the lower $400 price tier.
- Choose the SRPL89 if you prefer orange, black and gold-toned vintage-sporting details.
- Choose neither as a primary dive instrument if you specifically need a purpose-built, certified dive watch or the classic SKX’s 200 m/screw-down-crown specification.
The bracelet-versus-strap decision is almost as important as the color. The bracelet models cost more but present as more conventional everyday watches. The silicone models cost less and make the colorway a larger part of the ownership experience.

All four watches use a 22 mm lug width, so owners have a broad range of potential replacement and alternate straps. A 22 mm Seiko watch strap can be a sensible optional purchase if you want to change the character of the watch or replace the supplied strap. However, 22 mm width alone does not guarantee a perfect fit: check end-link shape, strap thickness, spring-bar diameter and clearance at the case before ordering.
The bracelet models may also require sizing. A spring-bar tool can help with some strap changes, while a bracelet-sizing tool may be useful for links, but neither is mandatory for every owner. If you are unfamiliar with bracelet adjustment, using a competent watchmaker or retailer can reduce the risk of scratching the case or damaging the clasp.
A travel case or storage box is similarly optional. It makes sense for someone rotating several watches, but it is not a required companion purchase for any of these SRPL references.

Seiko’s 5 Sports line reaches back to the 1960s and was substantially relaunched in 2019. The collection has long been framed around reliability, durability, performance and value, while drawing on recognizable Seiko sports-watch designs.
The SRPL quartet continues that strategy. The watches borrow the visual vocabulary that made the SKX007 and related models recognizable, then update the marker geometry, bezel treatment, hands and bracelet instead of simply reproducing an old diver. That is why the new generation can appeal to SKX fans without being a literal reissue of the discontinued classic.

Launch coverage reported European pricing of €440 for the steel-bracelet references and €400 for the silicone-strap references, with availability beginning in June 2025. Those figures are market-specific launch prices and should not be used as a universal current price. Taxes, retailer discounts, currency changes and stock levels can all affect the amount paid.
Before buying, confirm the exact reference, supplied bracelet or strap, warranty terms, seller status and current price. The four watches may be active in Seiko’s catalog while individual colors remain unavailable at particular retailers.

The SRPL83, SRPL85, SRPL87 and SRPL89 are a meaningful visual refresh of Seiko’s affordable SKX-style 5 Sports platform. The bezel insert, rectangular markers, revised hands and new bracelet give the watches a more considered identity than a simple color update.
But the underlying proposition remains familiar: a 42.5 mm automatic sports watch powered by the 4R36, with Hardlex, a day-date display and 100 m water resistance. Buy one for the updated SKX-inspired design and the choice of four distinct personalities—not because it is a modern replacement for a professional diver or a literal SKX007 reissue.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the Seiko SRPL83, SRPL85, SRPL87 and SRPL89?
The SRPL83 has a blue dial and blue bezel on a steel bracelet; the SRPL85 has a black dial and steel bracelet; the SRPL87 has a yellow dial with a black bezel and black silicone strap; and the SRPL89 has an orange dial with black-and-gold-toned details and a black silicone strap. The steel models list for $450 in the U.S., while the silicone-strap models list for $400.
Are the Seiko SRPL watches replacements for the SKX007 or SKX009?
No. They draw on the SKX design archive but are not direct reissues. They use a 42.5 mm case, 4R36 movement and 100 m water resistance, while the classic SKX diver platform is associated with 200 m water resistance and a screw-down crown.

Can you dive with the Seiko SRPL83, SRPL85, SRPL87 or SRPL89?
They have 100 m water resistance and dive-inspired styling, but they should not be treated as professional or ISO-rated dive watches. For serious diving, choose a purpose-built dive watch with the appropriate specification and certification.
What movement is inside the Seiko SRPL series?
All four use Seiko’s 4R36 automatic movement with manual winding, stop-seconds/hacking, day-date display, 24 jewels and approximately 41 hours of power reserve. Seiko’s stated caliber accuracy range should not be confused with a timing test of an individual watch.
What strap size do the SRPL watches use?
The watches use a 22 mm lug width. That allows many 22 mm replacement straps to be considered, but width alone does not guarantee perfect end-link, thickness or spring-bar compatibility.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The SRPL83 and SRPL85 are the sensible bracelet choices, while the SRPL87 and SRPL89 offer more color for less money. All four successfully modernize Seiko’s SKX-inspired look, but their 100 m rating and push-pull crowns make them dive-inspired sports watches—not professional dive-watch replacements.
