The Seiko Presage Classic SPB521, SPB523 and SPB524 are compact 36mm automatic watches with nearly identical core specifications. The choice comes down chiefly to each model’s dial and case treatment—and whether the SPB524’s $50 US price premium suits you. All three use Seiko’s 6R51 movement, offer an approximately 72-hour power reserve, and have a 10-bar water-resistance rating.
What are the SPB521, SPB523 and SPB524?
They are three-hand watches in Seiko’s Presage Classic Series. Seiko describes the collection as drawing on “colors, materials, and textures of traditional Japanese crafts to express the soft and gentle side of Japanese design.” The three references share the same basic size and movement platform; their appeal is primarily visual rather than a choice between substantially different technical packages.

How do the three models differ?
The main distinction is the dial and case character. Seiko’s published specifications establish the shared hardware, while the official US collection page lists the prices below. Consider the color and finish that best suit your wardrobe and the occasions where you expect to wear the watch.
| Reference | Visual distinction | Official US price |
|---|---|---|
| SPB521J1 | Its own dial treatment; stainless-steel case with super-hard coating. | $950 |
| SPB523J1 | Its own dial treatment; the published movement, dimensions, crystal and water-resistance platform match the SPB521. | $950 |
| SPB524J1 | Its own dial treatment in a stainless-steel case. | $1,000 |
Prices are Seiko’s listed US prices; regional pricing may differ, and prices can change. The SPB524 is $50 above the other two in the US. Beyond that price step and their distinct visual treatments, the published specifications offer little reason to choose one for a technical advantage.

What specifications do they share?
Case and proportions
Each measures 36.0mm across, 12.5mm thick and 41.4mm from lug to lug, with 18mm lug spacing. Seiko lists the weight as 118g. Those compact proportions give the watches a traditional, restrained presence rather than the larger footprint many contemporary watches use.
Movement and power reserve
All three use Seiko’s 6R51 automatic movement, which can also be wound by hand. Seiko specifies a power reserve of approximately 72 hours, or three days, and a stated precision range of +25/-15 seconds per day. The movement has 24 jewels and a stop-seconds function, which halts the seconds hand when setting the time.
Crystal and water resistance
Each has a dual-curved sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating on its inner surface, plus a 10-bar water-resistance rating. That rating gives the watches more water resistance than a strictly dress-only specification, but it is not a substitute for following Seiko’s instructions on crown position, maintenance and use around water.

There is no universal gender rule for a 36mm watch. It is a compact, traditional size that may suit a smaller wrist, or simply someone who prefers a less prominent watch. On a larger wrist it will look more discreet than a 40mm-plus case. The 41.4mm lug-to-lug measurement helps explain how much wrist the case spans, while dial design, strap choice and personal taste also affect the impression.

If possible, compare the stated dimensions with a watch you already own or try a similar-sized case on wrist. Diameter alone does not determine whether a watch looks or feels right.
Which Presage Classic should you choose?
- Choose the SPB521J1 if its dial treatment appeals to you and you want the coated stainless-steel case at the $950 US list price.
- Choose the SPB523J1 if its distinct dial treatment is the one you prefer; its listed US price is also $950.
- Choose the SPB524J1 if its particular dial and case presentation is worth the $50 premium over the other two US-priced models.
All three share the same basic wearing dimensions, movement, approximate reserve, crystal type and water-resistance rating. This is therefore chiefly a choice of appearance and budget, not a choice of one model with a longer reserve or different case size.
