Google announced the Edge on October 12, 2026, with standard-model preorders at $179.99 and retail availability stated to begin October 27. Those are announcement details, not confirmation of current stock or pricing. At a glance: what separates Edge and Charge 6?
| Priority | Better fit | What Google’s published information says |
|---|---|---|
| Newer display and interface | Fitbit Edge | Google describes a Hybrid OLED display, a physical side button, and a redesigned on-device interface. Google’s Edge announcement says the display offers 46% more viewing area than previous trackers, a manufacturer comparison rather than an independent measurement. |
| Documented NFC | Fitbit Charge 6 | The Charge 6 specifications list NFC. Google’s Edge announcement does not list NFC or Google Wallet. |
| GPS without carrying a phone | Either | Google describes built-in GPS for Charge 6 and built-in precision GPS for Edge. The published materials do not establish which is more accurate in a direct comparison. |
| Exercise modes | Edge, by published mode count | Google describes more than 50 modes for Edge and more than 40 for Charge 6 in its 2023 Charge 6 launch announcement. These are claims from different product materials, not results of a head-to-head test. |
| Battery life | No clear winner from published estimates | Both are listed for up to seven days. The estimates use different test periods and conditions, so they do not establish which lasts longer in comparable use. |
| Launch price | Charge 6 had the lower historical launch price | Google announced Edge at $179.99 in 2026; the Charge 6 preorder price was $159.95 in 2023. These historical announcement prices are not a current-price comparison. |
What does Fitbit Edge add?
A newer screen and on-device interface
Edge is the newer announced tracker. Google describes a Hybrid OLED display, a physical side button, and a redesigned interface. The announcement also lists an 11.5 mm thickness. Its claim of up to 40% improved GPS tracking accuracy is versus previous generations, not a measured Edge-versus-Charge-6 result. Treat both statements as manufacturer claims, not independent performance findings. Google’s announcement
Coaching and health insights with conditions
Google says Edge includes Health Coach features, but Health Coach requires Google Health Premium and an internet connection. Some health features vary by country and device. Google also describes blood-pressure and insulin-resistance trends as general-wellness features, not tools for diagnosis or treatment. Check the feature list and availability for your market before buying. Google’s announcement
#1 Best Overall
- COMPLETE ALL-IN-ONE-BUNDLE: Includes Fitbit Charge 6 Black/Obsidian, rapid USB charger, and a premium microfiber cleaning cloth, – everything you need to start tracking in style.
What the Edge announcement does not establish
The announcement describes Google Maps and media controls, but does not list NFC or Google Wallet. If contactless payment is essential, verify the feature list on the current Edge product page before purchase rather than assuming it is supported.
What does Charge 6 offer?
Documented NFC, Maps, and Wallet
Google’s Charge 6 specifications list NFC, and its launch announcement says the tracker supports Google Maps and Google Wallet. That makes Charge 6 the better-supported choice in this comparison if documented contactless-payment capability matters. Confirm that the services you need are available in your country and on your phone. Charge 6 technical specifications · Charge 6 launch announcement

Published health sensors
The Charge 6 specification page lists ECG-compatible electrical sensors, EDA compatibility, SpO2, and a skin-temperature sensor. A listed sensor or compatibility feature does not by itself establish that a reading is available in every region or suitable for medical decisions; check Google’s current feature and availability details for your market. GPS, workouts, and battery: what can you compare fairly?
Both have built-in GPS
Google’s materials describe built-in GPS on both trackers, so each is positioned to record outdoor activity without relying on a phone for GPS. The Edge announcement’s accuracy-improvement figure compares it with previous generations; it does not show that Edge outperforms Charge 6. No controlled comparison is established by these sources.

Mode counts are not a direct test
Google describes more than 50 exercise modes for Edge and more than 40 for Charge 6. The claims come from different dated product materials, so they suggest a larger published mode count for Edge but do not show how well either tracker recognizes or records a workout.
Both claim up to seven days, under different test conditions
Google lists up to seven days for Edge based on 2026 testing of pre-production hardware and software with Battery Saver-default feature settings. The Charge 6 estimate is based on mid-2023 testing. Google says actual battery life varies. Because the test periods and conditions differ, the figures are manufacturer estimates, not a controlled endurance comparison. Price and availability: compare the live offers, not launch prices
Google’s October 12, 2026 announcement lists the standard Edge at $179.99, says retail availability begins October 27, 2026, and lists a $219.99 Stephen Curry Special Edition. The Charge 6’s $159.95 preorder price was announced in 2023. These figures describe separate launch announcements; they do not show today’s prices or availability. Check current retailer listings before deciding. Edge announcement · Charge 6 launch announcement
Check phone compatibility and setup before buying
Edge requires a Google Account, the Google Health app, and an internet connection. Google says most phones running Android 11 or later or iOS 16.4 or later are supported. The Charge 6 specification page also lists Google Health app requirements and Android 11+/iOS 16.4+ compatibility. Check the current requirements for your specific phone and region, along with availability of the features you expect to use. Edge announcement · Charge 6 specifications

Which tracker should you choose?
Choose Edge if its newer experience is what you want
- You value the newer display and redesigned on-device interface.
- You want Google’s announced coaching and health-insight features and are comfortable checking Premium, internet, and regional requirements.
- Its current price and availability work for you after checking live listings.
Choose Charge 6 if its documented feature set fits better
- You want NFC documented in the official specifications, or Google Maps and Wallet support described in Google’s Charge 6 materials.
- The Charge 6’s listed sensors and established feature set suit your priorities.
- Its current price is more appealing after you compare live offers.
If neither display nor documented NFC is decisive, both trackers’ published built-in GPS and up-to-seven-day battery estimates leave the choice to the features, phone requirements, regional availability, and current price that matter to you. The available claims do not establish that Edge is more accurate or a proven upgrade over Charge 6.
