A large red X on a Fitbit Versa usually indicates a sync or software error—not simply a low battery. Google says the symbol can appear when the watch software freezes during a data transfer. Start by charging the watch, restart it using the correct procedure for your model, then remove and re-add it in the Google Health app if the X remains. Google’s official troubleshooting guidance recommends removing the device from the app and forgetting its Bluetooth connection before setting it up again.
What does the red X mean on a Fitbit Versa?
Google Fitbit identifies the red X as a sync/software error. The watch’s software has typically frozen while transferring data. That can happen after a failed sync, interrupted setup or re-pairing attempt, restart, charging interruption, or another incomplete software process.

The symbol does not prove one specific underlying fault. It does not, by itself, confirm a failed update, defective battery, water damage, or failed motherboard. A single occurrence is not a reason to assume the watch is permanently dead.
If the watch still reaches the clock face and only syncing is failing, the sensible first response is to restart the watch, restart the phone, and then remove and re-add the Versa rather than replacing it.

Red X versus low-battery warning
| What you see | What it generally means |
|---|---|
| Large red X across the watch screen | Sync or software error |
| Red battery indicator | Low battery |
| Flashing red battery or charging indicator | Very low battery |
These indicators should not be confused. Fitbit’s charging guidance describes a red light as low battery and a flashing red light as very low battery. The original Versa manual says a red battery indicator appears when less than 24 hours of battery life remain and flashes when fewer than four hours remain. That is not the same display as a large red X.
On the original Versa, Versa Lite, and Versa 2, battery status can be viewed by swiping down from the top of the screen when the watch is operating. See Fitbit’s charging and battery guidance and the original Versa manual.
Identify your Versa before restarting it
“Fitbit Versa” can refer to five different models. The original Versa does not use the same button combination as the later versions.

A normal restart reboots the watch without deleting activity data. It is not the same as a factory reset. Do not insert a paper clip or another object into a hole on the watch: openings may be sensors, microphones, speakers, or altimeter ports. The official restart instructions show the model-specific procedures.
How to fix a Fitbit Versa stuck on a red X
1. Charge it correctly
If the screen is black, the watch is unresponsive, or its battery may be deeply discharged, connect it to a reliable wall outlet for at least 60 minutes. Google specifically recommends a wall outlet rather than a computer USB port for a black-screen device.
- Remove the watch from its charger.
- Inspect the rear charging contacts.
- Check the charger pins for dirt, corrosion, or pins that are stuck down.
- Clean the contacts carefully and let them dry.
- Reconnect the watch securely.
- Try a known-good wall outlet and, if available, a compatible replacement cable.
Do not assume every Versa cable is interchangeable. The Versa 2 charging cable is not compatible with the original Versa or Versa Lite Edition. The Google Store’s Fitbit Smartwatch Charging Cable is listed for the Versa 3 and Versa 4, among other newer models, but not the earlier Versa models. Check the model before buying a cable.
2. Restart the watch
Use the model-specific button instructions above. A successful restart should produce the Fitbit logo and then the clock face or setup screen. The red X may disappear, and the watch should become responsive to taps, swipes, or the phone app.

3. Remove and re-pair the Versa
If the red X returns or remains, follow Google’s full re-pairing sequence:
- Open the Google Health app.
- Tap your profile picture or initial in the upper-right corner.
- Tap Remove this device.
- Open the phone’s Bluetooth settings.
- Select the Versa and choose Forget or Unpair.
- Return to the Google Health app.
- Tap Set Up a Device.
- Follow the on-screen pairing instructions.
Removing the Versa from the app alone may not be enough. The old Bluetooth entry should also be forgotten before setup is attempted again.
4. Restart the phone and reduce Bluetooth conflicts
If setup still fails, update the Google Health app, restart the phone, and temporarily turn off Bluetooth on other nearby phones, tablets, or computers. Then retry setup. Older Fitbit moderator guidance also suggests setting the watch up as a new device when normal pairing continues to fail. This is additional community-support advice, not proof that every red X has the same cause.
What if the red X appears while charging?
Prioritize the charging cable, contact cleanliness, pin movement, and power source. Leave the watch connected to a wall outlet for at least an hour if it is black or unresponsive.
A red X during charging may still be a software or sync failure; the available guidance does not establish that the charger is always the cause. However, unstable charging can prevent the watch from completing recovery, so it should be ruled out before more drastic steps.

Contact Google Fitbit support if the watch repeatedly cycles through the Fitbit logo, red X, and black screen, or if it cannot maintain enough power to complete setup. Community threads document similar patterns on Versa 3 and Versa 4, but those reports are anecdotal and do not establish a universal hardware defect.
Before seeking support, complete the following once:
- Charge for at least 60 minutes using the correct cable.
- Clean and check the charging contacts.
- Perform the correct model-specific restart.
- Remove the watch from the Google Health app.
- Forget or unpair it in Bluetooth.
- Restart the phone and retry setup.
Support or replacement becomes more sensible when the X returns after every restart, the watch only works on the charger, the battery drains unusually quickly, the charging pins cannot make contact, or the device has physical or liquid damage.
Should you factory-reset the watch?
Not first. The non-destructive path is charging, restarting, removing the device from the app, forgetting Bluetooth, and setting it up again. A factory reset can remove locally stored settings and require complete setup again, and it is not guaranteed to fix a red X.
If the watch is frozen on the X and cannot complete a reset, repeating the same button sequence indefinitely is unlikely to help. Move to official support instead. Do not assume a factory reset will preserve locally stored data; the explicit non-destructive protection applies to a normal restart.
Repair, replace, or keep troubleshooting?
| Situation | Best next action |
|---|---|
| One-time red X and the watch otherwise works | Restart, then sync again. |
| X persists but the watch is detected | Remove it from Google Health, forget Bluetooth, and re-add it. |
| Black screen or suspected deep discharge | Charge from a wall outlet for 60 minutes, then restart. |
| Repeated logo/red-X/black-screen loop | Contact Google Fitbit support after checking charging and restarting. |
| Missing or damaged charger | Buy a cable specifically compatible with the exact Versa model. |
| Old watch with recurring battery failure | Compare a professional repair quote with replacement cost. |
A battery replacement is not a universal first-line fix. Versa batteries are internal, and opening the watch can damage the display, seals, or other components. If repair costs approach replacement cost, a replacement may be more rational.
For readers who ultimately need a new device, Google currently presents the Versa 4 as the Versa-branded replacement, while the Sense 2 is positioned as a more wellness- and stress-focused smartwatch and the Charge 6 as a tracker rather than a direct Versa-style replacement. Those are product decisions—not remedies for a single red X. Check current regional pricing, stock, warranty terms, and compatibility before buying.

Bottom line
The large red X on a Fitbit Versa usually means the watch encountered a sync or software error, not that its battery is simply empty. Charge it with the correct cable, restart it using the right model-specific button combination, then remove it from Google Health and forget its Bluetooth pairing before setting it up again. If the X repeatedly returns or the watch cannot hold a charge, stop treating it as an ordinary sync problem and contact Google Fitbit support.
