Flik Flak is a children’s watch brand from Swatch Group, founded in Switzerland in 1987. Its clearest appeal is a time-learning design: color-coded hands and dials make hours and minutes easier to distinguish, with the Story Time family aimed at younger beginners and Power Time at older children. It may suit a child who is ready to practice reading an analog clock, but the right choice depends on learning stage, fit, and the specifications of the individual model.
What is Flik Flak?
Swatch Group says Flik Flak began in Switzerland in 1987 and describes its intended age range as three to ten. The group says the brand is available in more than 100 countries across five continents; that is the company’s current brand-page statement, not an independently audited distribution figure. Swatch Group’s Flik Flak overview presents the brand as a Swiss watch for children.
Swatch says the watches are created in ETA workshops in Switzerland. The brand’s product concept is built around learning aids, rather than simply shrinking an adult watch: the two families use different hand and dial treatments to meet children at different stages.
Does a Flik Flak watch help children learn to tell time?
It is designed to support practice, but the available evidence describes the features, not proven learning outcomes. There is no independent evidence here that a Flik Flak watch makes children learn faster or that every child will find the design helpful.

On the Swatch Ireland brand page, Swatch says the dial uses colors to distinguish hours from minutes, writes out numbers and five-minute steps, and uses dots for the minutes between those marks. The company also says every watch includes a paper practice game and describes a free game-style app, “Telling the time with Flik and Flak.” These aids give families ways to practice together, but they should be treated as the manufacturer’s description of the product.
Story Time vs. Power Time
Choose between the families based on where the child is in learning analog time, rather than age alone. Swatch Group gives a broad target range of three to ten, but does not state a precise age cutoff for each family.

These are family-level descriptions. The brand pages do not establish a complete, current comparison of individual models’ dimensions, strap materials, closures, or prices. A child’s preference matters too: a dial that feels motivating to one child may feel busy or too young to another.
Quality, safety, and water resistance
Swatch’s regional page says each watch spends a month in a quality-control lab and lists checks involving substances, mechanical stresses from shocks, sweat, pool water, washing-machine cycles up to 100°F, 3 bar water pressure, UV exposure, and humidity staining. The same page says the watches are free of phthalates and BPA and states a two-year global warranty. These are manufacturer claims; the page does not provide model-by-model test reports, so they are not a substitute for checking the exact watch’s current specifications, care guide, and local warranty terms.

Do not assume that every current Flik Flak is suitable for swimming or can be machine-washed. A January 2017 Flik Flak catalogue listed 3 bar water resistance and machine washability at 40°C, but that is historical catalogue information, not a current specification for every model. Check the product listing and instructions for the specific watch before exposing it to water or washing it.
What to check before buying
- Choose the learning layout. Start with Story Time for a beginner who benefits from separate character hands, or consider Power Time for a child ready for a conventional three-hand display with colored dial cues.
- Check fit on the actual model. Confirm the case size, strap material, strap length or fit guidance, and closure. The family descriptions do not provide a complete current model-by-model specification list.
- Read the model’s water and care instructions. Verify its stated water-resistance rating and approved cleaning method; do not rely on the older catalogue’s washing-machine claim.
- Confirm current terms and availability. Check the warranty that applies to the model and your region, plus the live price and stock at the retailer. Swatch says Flik Flak is sold through its online shop, Swatch stores, and selected department stores, but availability varies.
Customization should also be verified rather than assumed: a Swatch Group archive item dated 12 December 2018 described embroidery for thirteen models and named supported delivery countries at that time, which does not establish that personalization remains available today. Verdict
Flik Flak is a credible option to consider when the goal is a child-sized analog watch with explicit time-learning cues. Story Time and Power Time offer a useful distinction between beginner and more conventional layouts. The evidence supports the design intent and the manufacturer’s stated checks, but not independent claims about learning effectiveness or blanket durability and water performance. Make the decision at the individual-model level: the dial should make sense to the child, the watch should fit, and its current care and warranty details should match how it will be used.
