The Formex Essence is a collection, not a single watch, so the right review depends on the size and reference. The current Essence 39 pairs 39 mm case dimensions with a COSC-certified Sellita SW200-2 Power+ movement rated for a 65-hour power reserve. The Essence 41 is a larger option with a different crown configuration. Formex’s specifications make the 39 a compelling everyday-watch proposition on paper, but they do not establish independent accuracy or wearing performance.
What is the Formex Essence?
Formex positions the Essence as an everyday mechanical-watch collection with multiple case sizes, dials, and editions. Its Essence ThirtyNine page calls the line the brand’s flagship and bestselling collection; that is Formex’s description, not an independently verified sales ranking. The collection includes 39 mm, 41 mm, and 43 mm formats, so a review or listing that says only “Essence” may not describe the version you are considering.

What movement is in the current Formex Essence 39?
Formex lists the current Essence 39 with a Sellita SW200-2 Power+ automatic movement, COSC certification, 26 jewels, a date display, and a 65-hour power reserve. The brand says the updated movement extends the reserve from 41 to 65 hours and improves winding efficiency and shock resistance. Generation matters: older Essence 39 coverage may describe the earlier 41-hour reserve. Confirm the movement specification for the particular reference and listing rather than assuming every Essence 39 has the newer caliber.

Formex also highlights a patented Case Suspension System. The product page identifies it as a feature of the watch, but the available material does not establish a quantified comfort or shock-protection advantage through independent testing.
Is the Formex Essence 39 too small, or should you choose the 41?
Diameter is only one part of fit. The listed Essence 39 measures 45.5 mm lug-to-lug; the cited steel Essence 41 measures 46.5 mm. That one-millimeter difference in lug span may be as relevant as the two-millimeter difference in diameter, particularly if your wrist is short from side to side. Formex does not provide a universal wrist-size threshold here, so the most reliable approach is to compare the watch’s dimensions with a watch you already find comfortable.

The 39 is the more compact choice by the published dimensions; the 41 has slightly greater diameter and lug span. Decide between them by checking case proportions, the exact crown and dial configuration, and whether the listed package includes a bracelet or strap that suits you. Formex says the 39 mm steel bracelet has solid links, quick release, and tool-free micro-adjustment at 0, 3, and 6 mm. Its nylon, leather, and rubber options use curved quick-release spring bars and a carbon-fiber deployant clasp with 7 mm of adjustment across six micro-steps. The brand says the bracelet and straps taper to 18 mm and can be changed by hand without tools. Confirm that these details apply to the specific package you plan to buy.

The 39’s 20 mm lug width gives a useful starting point when searching for an alternative strap, but width alone does not guarantee fit. Formex’s curved spring bars and deployant clasp may not work with a generic strap, so verify the bar shape, strap curvature, and clasp attachment before ordering.
Is the Formex Essence worth buying?
On the published specifications, the current Essence 39 offers a compact steel case, 10-bar water-resistance rating, COSC-certified automatic movement, and a 65-hour reserve. That combination makes it worth considering if you want a mechanical everyday watch and prefer the 39 mm proportions. The 41 mm version is a reasonable alternative if its larger diameter, slightly longer lug span, or specific edition better matches your preferences.
The qualification is important: the listed dimensions, movement details, and reserve are manufacturer claims, and this review does not include hands-on timing or wear tests. COSC certification identifies a certified movement, but it does not supply an independent accuracy result for a particular watch after purchase. Before committing, check the exact size and reference, current movement generation, included bracelet or strap, local price and taxes, and return terms.
