Ulysse Nardin’s Freak is not merely an unusually shaped watch. It is a mechanical architecture built around a rotating movement, first shown in 2001 without a conventional crown, and it remains the brand’s clearest statement of experimental watchmaking. In a 14 October 2026 Revolution Watch interview, managing director Matthieu Haverlan positions the collection’s 25th anniversary around two complementary directions: the technically extreme Super Freak and a smaller, more practical Freak X.
What is the Ulysse Nardin Freak?
The Freak is Ulysse Nardin’s signature rule-breaking collection. Its original 2001 model used a seven-day carousel movement: the movement itself rotated to indicate the time, while a gear train and hands were integrated into the carousel. There was no conventional crown for winding or setting the watch. Instead, the wearer interacted with the case and movement directly.

The design also introduced a dual direct escapement and helped pioneer silicon components in commercial mechanical watchmaking. Silicon’s low friction, light weight and resistance to magnetism made it useful for reducing lubrication demands and improving consistency, although the Freak’s early escapement proved difficult to operate reliably. Haverlan describes the result succinctly: “The Freak has never been a simple watch. It represents a way of thinking and embodies a revolution in modern horology.”

The Freak made advanced materials and unconventional movement layouts visible to a wider luxury-watch audience. Its importance is not only the absence of a dial and hands in the conventional sense; it is the way the watch treats the entire movement as the display and makes the wearer engage with the mechanism.

Ulysse Nardin, founded in 1846, presents itself as an “ideas lab” working across mechanics, materials, design and finishing. The company says it has received more than 4,300 awards. The Freak is the clearest expression of that identity because each generation tests a different answer to the same question: how far can a mechanical wristwatch depart from familiar architecture while remaining usable?
How the Freak evolved from 2001 to 2026
Freak 2: correcting the first generation
Problems with the first-generation escapement led to the 2005 Freak 28,800V/H, commonly called Freak 2. It introduced the Dual Ulysse escapement, and many early watches were returned for replacement. That episode is part of the collection’s history: radical engineering can create a distinctive product, but it also requires a path to correction and long-term support.
Freak Vision and the Grinder system
Freak Vision brought automatic winding to the line through the UN-250 movement and its Grinder system. The mechanism uses movement components to transmit energy efficiently from the rotor to the mainspring, removing the need for a separate, conventional winding arrangement.

Freak X: making the idea a collection
Introduced in 2019, the Freak X added a traditional crown and combined it with the Grinder automatic system. Haverlan explained the strategic shift in a 2025 Watch Advice interview: “The Freak, in the beginning, was a modern standalone product; We only made them one at a time. It wasn’t really a collection, so we made it a collection by adding the Freak X – the one with the crown – as our entry level [Freak].”
Freak S and Freak One
Freak S, introduced in 2022, used two inclined balance wheels in an automatic movement, a configuration Haverlan called an industry first. “The Freak S is the only watch on the market that exists with two escapements powered by an automatic movement,” he said.
The Freak One combined the Grinder system, a nine-hour power reserve, a DIAMonSIL escapement and a 44 mm titanium-and-gold case. It won the GPHG Iconic Watch Prize in 2023, confirming that the Freak’s technical identity could also be recognized as a landmark design.
How does the Freak X differ from the Super Freak?
The 2026 anniversary models are designed for different kinds of ownership. Haverlan calls the Super Freak “a pure expression of high horology,” while he says, “For everyday wear, I naturally find myself wearing the Freak X most often.” The following comparison uses the distinctions described in the 2026 interview rather than unverified retail specifications.
| Aspect | Freak X (2026) | Super Freak |
|---|---|---|
| Role in the collection | More practical, compact entry into the Freak architecture | Technical and collectible flagship expression |
| Wearability | More compact and thinner case; intended for regular wear | Larger visual and mechanical presence |
| Controls | Traditional crown plus interchangeable straps | Freak-style interaction focused on the movement; exact control details vary by reference |
| Winding | Automatic movement with a rose-gold micro-rotor | High-complexity architecture; winding specification varies by reference |
| Escapement | DIAMonSIL escapement | Advanced silicon-based architecture, reference-dependent |
| 2026 updates | Smarter movement construction, higher water resistance and refined finishing | Emphasis on technical complexity and high-horology spectacle |
The practical difference is significant. A crown makes routine time-setting intuitive, a thinner case reduces wrist burden, and interchangeable straps make it easier to adapt the watch to work, travel or leisure. The Super Freak is for the owner who wants the collection’s most concentrated mechanical statement rather than its easiest daily interface.
Can you wear a Freak every day?
Yes, but the best choice depends on which Freak and how you use a watch. The 2026 Freak X is specifically engineered toward daily wear through its smaller, thinner case, crown, improved water resistance and strap interchangeability. Haverlan’s own stated preference is the clearest practical endorsement, although his experience does not establish a universal comfort result for every wrist.
A Super Freak can be worn regularly, but its size, visual intensity and more demanding interaction may suit a collector who welcomes attention and treats the watch as mechanical art. Before using any Freak as a daily watch, check the individual reference’s water-resistance rating and follow its operating instructions; the collection spans multiple generations and configurations.
What makes the Freak different from a normal mechanical watch?
- The display is the movement: the carousel rotates, so the mechanism carries the indication instead of sitting behind a conventional dial.
- The crown is optional rather than assumed: early Freaks had none; the Freak X added one to make the concept easier to live with.
- Escapement design is central: dual direct escapements, the Dual Ulysse system, silicon and DIAMonSIL are not side features but the collection’s engineering narrative.
- Automatic winding is rethought: the Grinder system and later micro-rotor solutions adapt self-winding to the unusual movement layout.
- Form follows experiment: case, movement and time display are designed as one rotating object rather than a standard round case surrounding a separate dial.
Why the collection matters to Ulysse Nardin’s future
Haverlan also treats the Freak as a way to attract new customers. He links social media, collaborations and younger collectors to the brand’s growth. For the Gumball 3000 collaboration, Ulysse Nardin reported five times more engagement, double the website visits and triple the product-page visits compared with Watches & Wonders; it also reported that 120 of 150 limited-edition pieces went to Gumball 3000 drivers. Those are company-reported comparisons, not an independent market study, but they show how the Freak functions as both a watchmaking laboratory and a cultural entry point.
That strategy fits Haverlan’s stated ambition: “I want Ulysse Nardin to become the most badass luxury watch brand, to be cool, to be sexy; But I also want it to be polarising.” The Freak is polarising by design. Its value is not that it resembles a conventional luxury watch, but that it makes the wearer decide whether unconventional mechanics are the point of ownership.
