It was created as a smaller, self-winding alternative to the 42 mm hand-wound Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch. Today, the Reduced is principally a pre-owned watch, and its modular movement makes condition and service history more important than a low asking price.
What is the Omega Speedmaster Reduced?
The Reduced keeps the black, no-date, three-register layout associated with the Speedmaster, but packages it in a more compact case and adds automatic winding. Omega’s factory specification lists a stainless-steel 39 mm case, reinforced plastic crystal, black dial, 3 bar (30 m/100 ft) water resistance, automatic winding, calibre 3220 and a 40-hour power reserve.

Fratello’s technical measurements put the case at 38.5 mm, commonly rounded to 39 mm. Lug-to-lug is about 44.5 mm and thickness about 12 mm, so it wears materially smaller than the approximately 42 mm Moonwatch. The original bracelet reference discussed by Fratello is 1469, with polished center links and a taper from 18 mm at the lugs to 16 mm at the clasp.

| Characteristic | Speedmaster Reduced 3510.50 | Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch |
|---|---|---|
| Case diameter | 38.5 mm measured; generally described as 39 mm | Approximately 42 mm |
| Lug-to-lug | About 44.5 mm | Not stated in the cited material |
| Winding | Automatic | Hand-wound |
| Crystal | Reinforced plastic (Hesalite) | Moonwatch specification varies by reference; the comparison material identifies it as the larger professional model |
| Water resistance | 3 bar (30 m/100 ft) | Not stated in the cited material |
| Production status | Discontinued; produced from 1988 to around 2010 | Current production status is outside this model’s specification |
The dial provides quick visual clues. “Automatic” is printed beneath “Speedmaster,” the subdials sit closer to the outer edge, and the chronograph pushers sit slightly higher than the crown. Those offsets are functional, not cosmetic: they reveal the Reduced’s modular movement architecture.

Calibre 3220: what the modular movement means
Omega calibre 3220 combines a no-date ETA 2890-A2 automatic base with a Dubois-Dépraz 2020 chronograph module. Rather than placing the chronograph works in the same layer as the timekeeping train, the add-on module sits above the base movement. That arrangement allows automatic winding in a smaller case, but it also produces the characteristic pusher-and-crown height mismatch.
Fratello notes the movement’s 47-jewel count, which reflects the additional module. A service can require more disassembly, diagnosis and adjustment than a conventional hand-wound, integrated-style Moonwatch movement. That does not make calibre 3220 inherently unsuitable; it means a buyer should budget for a watchmaker familiar with modular chronographs and avoid treating an inexpensive example as maintenance-free.

Dial, bracelet and wearing experience
Compact Speedmaster proportions
At roughly 39 mm by 44.5 mm lug-to-lug and about 12 mm thick, the Reduced suits wrists that find a 42 mm Moonwatch visually or physically large. The familiar black dial and three subdials preserve the Speedmaster identity, while the smaller case gives the watch a less imposing profile.

The 1469 bracelet described by Fratello uses polished center links and narrows from 18 mm to 16 mm. Correct end links and bracelet references matter when assessing originality, fit and value; replacement parts can look close while changing the watch’s period-correct appearance.

Is the 3510.50 a good pre-owned buy?
It can be, provided the individual watch is evaluated as a decades-old mechanical chronograph rather than simply as a cheaper Moonwatch. The model attracted substantial collector attention: Fratello’s historical analysis recorded more than 270,000 unique visits in a 2015 analysis of Chrono24 listings for 3510/3810 watches. That figure demonstrates interest, not a current price guide. Asking prices, inventory and condition vary continually.
Checks to complete before buying
- Confirm the reference. Verify that the case, movement and paperwork identify 3510.50.00, not a visually similar Speedmaster variant.
- Inspect originality. Check that the dial, hands, bezel and crystal are appropriate for the reference. Replacements are not automatically bad, but they should be disclosed and reflected in the deal.
- Test the chronograph. Start, stop and reset it repeatedly. The seconds and minute counters should engage cleanly and return to their indexes without hesitation.
- Assess the case. Look for over-polishing, softened edges, deep dents and damaged threads around the pushers and crown.
- Request service evidence. A dated invoice or service record is more useful than a seller’s general statement that the watch is “running.” Ask who performed the work and what was replaced.
- Check bracelet and end links. Confirm the 1469 bracelet and compatible end links if originality is important, and inspect stretch, clasp wear and missing links.
- Authenticate the seller and watch. Use clear photographs of the movement and reference markings where possible, and make sure the return and authentication terms are explicit.
Because the watch is rated to only 3 bar, treat that figure as splash resistance, not an invitation to swim. A decades-old example should not be exposed to water until its seals have been inspected and pressure-tested.

Reduced, Moonwatch or Speedmaster 38?
The Reduced is the choice for a discontinued, compact automatic Speedmaster with a distinctive modular calibre. The Moonwatch is the larger hand-wound professional format. Fratello identifies the modern Speedmaster 38 as the relevant smaller automatic comparison for buyers who want a current-production-style alternative, while the original Reduced remains differentiated by its 3510.50 reference, approximately 39 mm proportions and out-of-production status.
Choose by priorities rather than by diameter alone: automatic convenience points to the Reduced, traditional hand-winding and the professional Moonwatch format point to the Moonwatch, and a contemporary smaller automatic option points toward the Speedmaster 38. In every case, total ownership condition—movement health, originality, serviceability and correct bracelet components—matters more than the model name on the dial.
