Which watch suits your priorities?
Choose the Forerunner 965 for running focus and longer listed battery life
The Forerunner 965 is the more natural fit if running is central to your training and you prefer a running-oriented design. Garmin lists up to 23 days in smartwatch mode, compared with up to 16 days for the compared 47 mm epix Pro Sapphire Edition. Those are maximum manufacturer estimates, not predictions for every user or setting.

Battery life changes with use. Garmin says factors including enabled features, smartphone notifications, GPS, internal sensors, and connected sensors affect actual runtime. Frequent GPS activity or other power-hungry settings can make real-world life differ from the headline figure; compare the estimate only as a starting point.

Choose the epix Pro for its flashlight, ECG app, or higher water rating
The epix Pro adds an LED flashlight and ECG app in Garmin’s comparison, and its listed 10 ATM rating is higher than the Forerunner 965’s 5 ATM. These differences matter if you expect to use those features or want the additional water-pressure rating; they do not make the epix Pro categorically better for training.
Garmin’s epix Pro series owner’s manual describes the 10 ATM rating as withstanding pressure equivalent to a depth of 100 m. That is a pressure-rating description, not a recommendation to use the watch for diving to 100 m. See Garmin’s epix Pro series owner’s manual for the manufacturer’s guidance.

Pick by fit and intended use, not by assumed training superiority
Both watches include a wide set of multisport and training functions, including training readiness and training status. Garmin’s comparison does not establish that one delivers universally better training results. Decide which one fits your use by weighing running-oriented styling against the epix Pro’s added convenience features, along with fit and the specific case and edition you are considering.

What both watches already cover
Choosing the Forerunner 965 does not mean giving up mapping or multi-band GPS: Garmin lists both on the Forerunner 965 and the compared epix Pro. Both also list music storage, Garmin Pay, training readiness, training status, and sleep score/insights. If these shared capabilities are your main requirements, the decision is more about battery estimates, fit, and the epix Pro’s additional features than about basic multisport coverage.

Check the exact epix Pro size and edition
Garmin lists the epix Pro (Gen 2) in 42 mm, 47 mm, and 51 mm sizes across its comparison pages. The figures in this comparison for epix Pro battery life apply to the 47 mm Sapphire Edition, and specifications can differ by size or edition. Confirm the exact regional listing and configuration before buying; do not assume a figure for the 47 mm Sapphire Edition applies to every epix Pro.

AMOLED care
Both watches use AMOLED. Garmin’s Forerunner manual says image persistence is normal AMOLED behavior and advises against keeping static images at high brightness for long periods. The manual’s guidance is available in Garmin’s Forerunner 965 owner’s manual.
