The Garmin Forerunner 970 is the successor to the Forerunner 965 and Garmin’s newer premium running and triathlon smartwatch. Announced on May 21, 2025, it launched in the US at a suggested retail price of $749.99 before tax, discounts or retailer promotions. Its upgrades include sapphire glass, a titanium bezel, an LED flashlight, ECG-capable health sensors, a microphone and speaker, and new running metrics. The important catch is battery life: the 970 lasts up to 15 days in smartwatch mode, compared with up to 23 days for the 965.
That makes the 970 a worthwhile upgrade for athletes who value premium durability and Garmin’s latest training features, but not an automatic upgrade for every 965 owner.

Garmin Forerunner 970 price and release date
Garmin announced the Forerunner 970 on May 21, 2025, alongside the Forerunner 570. The US suggested retail price was $749.99. That is the launch MSRP, not a guaranteed current retail price; regional pricing, stock and promotions can differ.
The watch is a 47mm premium GPS running and triathlon smartwatch. Garmin’s core watch functions do not require a recurring subscription, although downloaded music services, cellular services on compatible alternatives and some third-party services may have their own costs.

Garmin presents the 970 as the newer flagship Forerunner, but “successor” is more accurate than saying the company has definitively discontinued the 965. Garmin continues to list both models in its comparison ecosystem. See Garmin’s launch announcement and comparison tool.
What is new on the Forerunner 970?
Sapphire crystal and titanium
The 970 replaces the 965’s Corning Gorilla Glass 3 DX lens with sapphire crystal and adds a titanium bezel. Sapphire is considerably more scratch-resistant than conventional watch glass, which is useful for runners who train outdoors, travel or regularly brush against rocks and equipment. It is not unbreakable: a hard impact can still chip or crack it.
The change also shifts the Forerunner’s character. The 965 was already a premium performance watch, while the 970 moves closer to a premium sports smartwatch without adopting the heavier adventure-watch identity of Garmin’s fēnix family.

The 970 retains an AMOLED display and offers a brighter screen, with Garmin positioning it as its brightest AMOLED display on the watch. Brightness can improve readability during outdoor training, but high brightness and always-on settings can reduce endurance.
The integrated LED flashlight is one of the most practical additions. It can help with early-morning runs, finding equipment in a dark transition area or moving around camp. It is more convenient than using a phone, although it does not turn the watch into a dedicated high-power torch.

Microphone and speaker
A built-in microphone and speaker add supported call, voice-function and phone-assistant interactions. These features depend on a compatible phone and Bluetooth connection; they do not mean the watch can replace a phone for every communication or safety function.
New health sensors and ECG
The 970 adds ECG app support and skin-temperature tracking, along with expanded menstrual-cycle and past-ovulation estimates. Wrist-based heart-rate monitoring and pulse-ox functionality remain subject to Garmin’s usual regional, software and usage limitations.
ECG availability is not universal. Garmin says it depends on the country or region, compatible watch software, the latest Garmin Connect app and user eligibility. Garmin’s stated ECG requirements include being at least 22 years old. The ECG app can identify readings consistent with atrial fibrillation or normal sinus rhythm in supported circumstances, but it is not a general diagnostic tool or a substitute for professional medical care. Check Garmin’s current country availability and software requirements before buying.
More running metrics and training tools
The Forerunner 970 adds or highlights running-focused capabilities including:
- Running economy
- Running tolerance
- Step speed loss
- Suggested finish line

- Updated race-time prediction and training guidance
It also retains the premium Forerunner platform’s broader training and navigation features, including training readiness, training status, recovery time, HRV status, load ratio, real-time stamina, running dynamics, full-color maps and turn-by-turn course guidance.

Not every advanced metric is necessarily produced by the watch alone. Some running-dynamics and physiological measurements may require a compatible chest strap or other sensor. Garmin can also expand feature availability to other models through software updates, so a feature listed as new should not automatically be treated as permanently exclusive to the 970. Garmin’s 965-versus-970 explanation and official comparison provide the current feature breakdown.
Forerunner 970 versus Forerunner 965
| Feature | Forerunner 970 | Forerunner 965 |
|---|---|---|
| Launch US MSRP | $749.99 | Lower than the 970; current discounts vary |
| Case | 47mm | 47mm |
| Display | AMOLED | AMOLED |
| Lens | Sapphire crystal | Corning Gorilla Glass 3 DX |
| Bezel | Titanium | Different, lighter Forerunner construction |
| Storage | 32GB | 32GB |
| Water rating | 5 ATM | 5 ATM |
| Smartwatch battery | Up to 15 days | Up to 23 days |
| GPS activity | Up to 26 hours | Up to 31 hours |
| All-systems GNSS + multi-band | Up to 21 hours | Up to 19 hours |
| All-systems GNSS + multi-band + music | Up to 12 hours | Up to 8.5 hours |
| LED flashlight | Yes | No |
| ECG app | Supported in eligible regions | Not listed in Garmin’s comparison |
| Skin-temperature tracking | Yes | Not listed in Garmin’s comparison |
| Maps and music | Yes | Yes |
| Premium training platform | Yes, with newer highlighted metrics | Yes |
The 970 is not a wholesale reinvention. Both watches provide the core experience most serious runners want: GPS training, mapping, music, multi-band positioning and Garmin’s performance and recovery ecosystem. The newer model’s most tangible differences are its materials, health hardware, flashlight, voice hardware and selected training additions.
Battery life: the 970 is not better in every mode
The biggest specification trade-off is the drop in headline everyday battery life. Garmin rates the 970 for up to 15 days in smartwatch mode, while the 965 is rated for up to 23 days.
| Mode | Forerunner 970 | Forerunner 965 |
|---|---|---|
| Smartwatch mode | Up to 15 days | Up to 23 days |
| GPS activity | Up to 26 hours | Up to 31 hours |
| All-systems GNSS + multi-band | Up to 21 hours | Up to 19 hours |
| All-systems GNSS + multi-band + music | Up to 12 hours | Up to 8.5 hours |
These are “up to” figures. Actual results depend on display brightness, always-on mode, GPS selection, music, phone connectivity, pulse-ox use, sensors and the length and frequency of activities.
The 965 is the clear winner for ordinary watch use and GPS-only recording. The 970 gains ground in the demanding all-systems GNSS plus multi-band modes, particularly when music is playing. Therefore, it is inaccurate to describe the 970 as having universally better battery life. The right choice depends on how the watch is used.

Is the Forerunner 970 worth $749.99?
For new buyers
The 970 makes the strongest case for someone buying a premium Forerunner for the first time. Sapphire, the flashlight and newer sensors are hardware advantages that software cannot fully add to an older watch. If the price is acceptable and 15 days is sufficient, the 970 is the most complete running-focused Forerunner option.
For Forerunner 965 owners
Upgrade if you specifically want sapphire protection, ECG, skin-temperature tracking, the flashlight, microphone and speaker, or the newer running metrics. Those are meaningful reasons to move to the 970.
Stay with the 965 if it already covers your training, you prefer its up-to-23-day smartwatch battery, or you can find it substantially below the 970’s $749.99 launch MSRP. The 965 still offers a full premium running, mapping and multisport feature set.
For marathon runners and serious runners
The 970 is most compelling for athletes who will actually use the new metrics and training guidance. Running economy, running tolerance and step speed loss may be useful when they inform training decisions, but they are not essential to every runner. If your needs are pace, distance, heart rate, structured workouts and reliable GPS, the 965 may deliver nearly the same practical experience for less.

For triathletes
The 970’s running, multisport, navigation and endurance features make it a strong fit for triathlon training. However, triathletes should compare their expected activity duration and GPS settings with the battery table rather than relying on the 15-day smartwatch figure. Music-enabled, multi-band use can produce very different results from everyday watch mode.

For casual runners
The 970 is difficult to justify if you mainly want GPS, pace, heart rate, notifications and occasional workouts. A discounted 965 or a less expensive Forerunner can provide the essentials without paying for sapphire, ECG and advanced metrics you may never use.
For smartwatch-first buyers
The microphone, speaker, AMOLED screen and health features make the 970 more smartwatch-like than the 965. It still prioritizes Garmin’s endurance-training ecosystem over a large app and communication platform. Phone-dependent functions such as calls, notifications and voice-assistant interactions require a compatible phone and connection.
Alternatives to the Forerunner 970
Garmin Forerunner 965
Choose the 965 when value and battery life matter more than the 970’s new hardware. Its up-to-23-day smartwatch rating is a substantial advantage, and it retains maps, music, multi-band GPS and premium training features. Current price and stock are volatile, so check the live Garmin or retailer listing rather than assuming a permanent discount.

Garmin fēnix
The fēnix family is the better fit for buyers who prioritize rugged outdoor positioning, adventure use and a more substantial multisport design. It can offer a broader expedition-oriented identity, but generally at the cost of more weight and potentially more money. Garmin positions the Forerunner 970 as the running and triathlon specialist and fēnix as the premium multisport/adventure family. Compare current models in Garmin’s smartwatch catalog.
Apple Watch Ultra 3
Apple Watch Ultra 3 is the more natural choice for an iPhone owner who prioritizes calls, apps, communications and cellular smartwatch functions. Apple’s US buying page lists it from $699, although configuration, cellular service and tax affect the final price. The trade-offs are iPhone-platform dependence and shorter practical battery intervals than Garmin’s multi-day endurance approach. Check Apple’s current buying page for live pricing.
Lower-priced Forerunner models
Runners who do not need sapphire, ECG, maps, the most advanced training metrics or the premium materials should consider a lower-priced Forerunner. The right model depends on whether the priority is basic GPS training, music, triathlon support or advanced recovery analysis.
Limitations to know before buying
- ECG is region-limited: Confirm country availability, software and Garmin Connect requirements. Eligibility rules apply.
- Health features are not diagnosis: ECG, pulse oximetry, heart rate and skin-temperature readings have defined limitations and should not replace medical advice.
- Battery depends on settings: Always-on AMOLED, high brightness, music, multi-band GPS and connected sensors can reduce runtime.
- Some metrics need accessories: Advanced running dynamics may require a compatible chest strap or other sensor.
- 5 ATM is not a dive rating: The watch is not positioned as a scuba-diving computer.
- Connected features need a phone: Calls, notifications, voice assistants and some safety functions depend on a compatible phone and Bluetooth connection.
- Maps and music are not identical to streaming: Offline maps and downloaded music are useful without a connection, while streaming services may require separate subscriptions.
- Support is not guaranteed indefinitely: Newer hardware may receive software attention for longer, but Garmin has not published a guaranteed support-duration schedule in the cited material.
Software features and menu paths can change. Garmin’s Forerunner 970 support page is the appropriate place to check current update information.
