Garmin’s major January 2025 outage was reported resolved, but “fixed” does not mean every watch, Edge computer, handheld or Garmin Connect installation recovered automatically. First check Garmin’s Garmin Connect System Status page. If services are operational, work through the least-destructive fixes below before deleting files or factory-resetting your device.
Start by identifying the failure
| What you see | Most likely next step |
|---|---|
| Blue triangle or startup loop | Force a shutdown, restart, then use model-specific Garmin recovery instructions. |
| Device works but new data is missing | Check internet and Bluetooth, restart both devices, then manually sync. |
| Repeated “Sync Failed” messages | Try Garmin Express; a corrupt activity file may be blocking synchronization. |
| Pairing Failed or device is missing | Remove stale Bluetooth entries and re-pair through Garmin Connect. |

Install the update through Garmin Express over USB. |
Was Garmin actually down?
The incident behind most “Garmin outage fixed” reports occurred from January 28 to 30, 2025. Some Garmin devices became stuck on the startup screen or showed a blue triangle. Garmin said on January 29 that the underlying issue had been resolved, while recommending a restart followed by synchronization through Garmin Connect or Garmin Express. TechRadar’s contemporaneous coverage reported the timeline.

That does not establish that Garmin is experiencing a new outage now. Service availability can change, so use Garmin’s live status page rather than relying only on social-media posts or third-party outage trackers. A green status page also does not rule out a local problem involving Bluetooth, the phone, firmware, storage or the device itself.

- Hold the device’s Power or Light button until it shuts down. Depending on the model, this may take up to about 15 seconds.
- Release the button, wait briefly, and press it again to restart.
- If it boots, sync immediately using Garmin Connect or Garmin Express.
Button combinations and recovery procedures differ across Garmin watches, Edge computers and handhelds. Garmin’s frozen or rebooting-device guidance and its blue-triangle support example should take priority over a generic reset instruction.

If the device turns on but Garmin Connect is stale
- Confirm the phone has working Wi-Fi or mobile data.
- Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on both devices.
- Open Garmin Connect and check that the device appears connected. A green connection indicator and syncing animation are useful signs that synchronization is progressing, according to Garmin’s sync guidance.
- Restart both the phone and Garmin device.
- Reopen Garmin Connect and wait for the sync to finish before checking activities, steps, sleep, weather or health metrics.
Bluetooth may still support notifications or Find My Phone while synchronization is broken. Conversely, the app may show a device as connected while uploads remain stuck.
Check the phone, app and network
Garmin Connect needs more than an active Bluetooth icon. Check that:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Garmin Connect has Bluetooth or nearby-device permission.
- The app is allowed to run in the background.
- Battery optimization or low-power mode is not suspending it.
- Garmin Connect and the phone’s operating system are up to date.
- A VPN, private DNS, firewall, proxy, Wi-Fi filter or restricted work network is not blocking Garmin.
- Temporarily switching between Wi-Fi and cellular data produces the same result.
Permission and battery menus vary between iPhone, Android and Android manufacturers, so use your phone’s current settings rather than applying an iPhone path to every device. Garmin lists network, VPN, permissions and phone-restart checks in its server and network troubleshooting guide.

When to remove and re-pair the device
Re-pair only after restarting, checking Bluetooth and attempting a normal sync. Pairing repair will not usually fix corrupted firmware or a boot loop, but it can resolve stale Bluetooth registration.
- Remove the device inside Garmin Connect.
- If it remains listed, forget it in the phone’s Bluetooth settings.
- Restart the phone and Garmin device.
- Add the device again from Garmin Connect, not directly from the phone’s Bluetooth menu.
- Use the device’s Pair Phone or equivalent menu if requested.
Garmin says that with Connect app version 5.21 and newer, removing a device from Garmin Connect may also remove it from the phone’s Bluetooth list in some configurations. Behavior varies by phone and operating system. Re-pairing may require restoring notifications, Wi-Fi, music, payment settings, Connect IQ apps, permissions and sensor pairings. See Garmin’s pairing troubleshooting for model-specific steps.
If Garmin Connect says “Sync Failed”
A single failure can be a timeout: wait a few minutes and try again. Repeated failures are different. Garmin says a corrupt file, often an activity file, may prevent the rest of the data from uploading.
- Connect the device to a Mac or Windows computer using a USB data cable.
- Open and sign in to Garmin Express, then add the device.
- Try to sync.
- If Express identifies a file that cannot upload, preserve or upload the activity where possible.
- Delete only the identified corrupt file using Garmin’s instructions for that product, then retry the sync.
Do not delete arbitrary files from the device. File locations, names and safe deletion methods differ by model. Garmin’s guidance is available for Sync Failed and Garmin Express sync failures.

Use Garmin Express when the phone route fails
Garmin Express is Garmin’s Mac and Windows utility for USB synchronization and software updates. It is particularly useful when mobile sync fails, a corrupt activity blocks uploads, or an update will not fit on the device.
For the iOS error Sync Failed FileTransferError notEnoughSpace, Garmin says the device may not have enough room for the software update; install the update through Garmin Express over USB. Connect can download updates in the background, and Garmin says downloads may take up to about a week before installation is prompted. Firmware is model-specific: for example, a Forerunner 255 software listing showed version 28.05 in June 2026, but that number must not be applied to other Garmin products.
If Express fails, check the computer’s internet connection, update Express, prevent the computer from sleeping during downloads, and temporarily test without a VPN, proxy or restrictive firewall. A charging-only USB cable may not transfer data. Try another data-capable cable and USB port, and check whether the device is detected in the correct USB, Mass Storage or MTP mode. Tethered, satellite, fixed-wireless and other connection types may also cause download problems. Garmin lists these issues in its Garmin Express error guide.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Protect activities recorded during the outage
There are four different situations:
- Still on the device: an activity may upload once synchronization works again.
- Already uploaded: check Garmin Connect on the web as well as in the mobile app.
- Interrupted or corrupt: Express may identify a file that blocks synchronization.
- Deleted or reset: recovery may not be possible.
Do not factory-reset before attempting a normal sync. If the device is accessible, use Garmin Express or the model’s documented USB process to preserve activity files before deleting anything. A missing activity may sometimes be recoverable as a .FIT file and imported through Garmin’s supported activity-import process, but the exact procedure depends on the product. Storage capacity, corruption, resets and model behavior mean Garmin cannot guarantee that every activity will return.

Other features that remain broken
GPS
GPS acquisition is primarily device-side. Test outdoors with a clear view of the sky, and consider firmware, satellite data, maps or corrupted files. A Garmin Connect outage alone does not explain every GPS failure.
Notifications
Check phone notification permissions and Garmin Connect’s background permissions. Re-pairing may restore the connection, but permissions may need to be enabled again.
Weather
Weather usually depends on the phone/app connection and location permissions. A stale forecast does not necessarily indicate failed watch hardware.

Health and training metrics
Some metrics may not appear in the app until synchronization succeeds. Check the data on the device before assuming it was never recorded.

Do not factory-reset too early
A reset is a last resort—not the default answer to an outage-related problem. Consider it only after Garmin’s status is normal, both devices have been restarted, software is current, re-pairing has failed, Garmin Express has been tried where appropriate, and locally stored data has been backed up or recovered.
Use the exact procedure for your model and read the warning carefully. Garmin manuals warn that options such as Delete Data and Reset Settings can remove user information and activity history; the exact effect varies by product. The Lily 2 manual provides one example of this warning.
When to contact Garmin
Contact Garmin Support if the device remains in a boot loop, stays blank despite charging and a forced restart, cannot be detected by Garmin Express, repeatedly crashes after an update or reset, overheats, will not charge, or contains a corrupt file that cannot be safely removed. Warranty or replacement should be considered only after model-specific recovery and support checks.
