Garmin vívomove Trend review: trending smarter—or stuck in the past?

The Garmin vívomove Trend remains a stylish Garmin hybrid smartwatch, but its phone-dependent GPS, small LCD and short battery life make the vívoactive 5 a better value for most fitness-focused buyers.

The Garmin vívomove Trend is still one of the most convincing traditional-looking hybrid smartwatches in 2026. Its physical analog hands, concealed touchscreen, Garmin health tracking, notifications, Garmin Pay and Qi charging make it appealing to anyone who wants smartwatch features without wearing an obviously digital watch.

But the Trend is a 2023 model, and its compromises matter more now. There is no built-in GPS, no music storage, no external sensor support, limited workout data and only up to five days of smartwatch battery life. At Garmin’s observed US list price of $269.99, the newer vívoactive 5 offers much more hardware and fitness capability for the same price. Buy the Trend for its design—not because it is Garmin’s best all-round smartwatch.

What is the Garmin vívomove Trend?

The vívomove Trend is a hybrid smartwatch. It combines real analog watch hands with a digital display hidden beneath the watch face. Tap or interact with the watch and the hands move away from the screen, revealing notifications, health information and workout controls.

That makes it different from a conventional analog watch, which has no tracking or smart features; a fitness band, which prioritizes an always-digital interface; and a full smartwatch, which normally has a permanently visible digital display and a broader app experience. The Trend is also not a dedicated Garmin sports watch. Garmin Connect does much of the ecosystem work, while the watch itself remains deliberately restrained.

Garmin Vivomove Trend, Stylish Hybrid Smartwatch, Long-Lasting Battery Life, Dynamic Watch Hands and Touchscreen Display, Ivory (Renewed), Adjustable
  • Stylish 40 mm hybrid smartwatch with sophisticated analog look, a stainless steel bezel and smart features
  • Battery life: up to 5 days in smart mode and up to one additional day in watch mode (hands tell time only)
  • Behind analog-style hands, you'll find a full-dial touchscreen display that reacts to your movements and is visible only when you need it
  • Stay connected with smart notifications for incoming calls, text messages, calendar view and more when paired with your Apple or Android smartphone
  • Know your body better with a full suite of health monitoring features, including continuous heart rate sampling, Body Battery energy levels, Pulse Ox, sleep score, stress tracking, women’s health tracking and more (This is not a medical device, and data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked. Pulse Ox not available in all countries)

It is best understood as a style-first, wellness-focused Garmin for people who want discreet notifications and everyday health trends, rather than a phone-independent training computer.

Design: the reason to buy it

The Trend has a 40.4 × 40.4 × 11.9 mm case and weighs 43.3 g with its supplied silicone strap; the case alone weighs 28.3 g. Its stainless-steel bezel, fiber-reinforced polymer case and chemically strengthened glass give it a more conventional watch appearance than most Garmin models.

  • Standard 20 mm quick-release bands
  • Listed wrist fit of 125–190 mm
  • 5 ATM water rating
  • Silicone strap included

The 40 mm format should suit many smaller and medium-sized wrists, although the best fit depends on wrist shape as well as circumference. The silicone strap is comfortable and practical for exercise, but it looks more sporty than formal. A nylon or leather-style 20 mm replacement band can make the watch more appropriate for office or dress wear.

Garmin’s 5 ATM rating means pressure equivalent to a depth of 50 metres. Conservatively, that makes the Trend suitable for ordinary swimming and surface-water exposure, not diving.

The analog styling is attractive, but it is not flawless. Independent coverage found the hands difficult to see in some lighting and at certain angles. They are designed to move away from the display, yet their positioning can still interfere with quick data glances. This is a central usability compromise, not merely a cosmetic detail.

The hidden display and daily interface

The concealed screen is a 1.01 × 0.74-inch liquid-crystal touchscreen with 254 × 346-pixel resolution. It is functional, but it is not an AMOLED panel and should not be judged by the standards of a modern full-screen smartwatch.

  • Bundle Includes: Garmin vivomove Trend - Slate Bezel - Black Case - Silicone Band + USB Wall Charger Adapter White Cube + Microfiber Cleaning Cloth + USB 3.0 to type-c female adapter
  • Classic Analog Watch with Hidden Touchscreen: Garmin vivomove Trend combines traditional analog watch styling with modern smartwatch functionality. The hidden touchscreen display appears only when needed, and the watch hands automatically move aside so you can view notifications and information on the screen.
  • Smart Notifications and Connected Features: When paired with a compatible smartphone, the watch displays notifications for calls, texts, emails, and calendar reminders directly on your wrist. Android users can also respond to text messages from the watch.
  • Garmin Pay Contactless Payments: Use Garmin Pay contactless payments to complete purchases quickly and conveniently at supported payment terminals. This feature allows you to leave your wallet behind and pay directly from your wrist. Track daily movement such as steps, activity time, and calories burned throughout the day. When paired with your smartphone, connected GPS enables accurate distance and route tracking for outdoor walks, runs, and rides.
  • Long Battery Life with Wireless Charging: Enjoy up to 5 days of battery life in smartwatch mode plus an additional day in analog-only mode. Quick charging provides up to one full day of smartwatch battery life from approximately 15 minutes of charging, and the watch supports Qi wireless charging pads.

The small display works well for short interactions: checking a notification, viewing a heart-rate value, starting an activity or checking steps. It is less suitable for reading large amounts of information. Notifications are more abbreviated, menus require more interaction and the watch never feels like a miniature phone.

Visibility varies by context. The subdued screen and physical hands preserve the analog look, but they also make the Trend less immediately legible than an AMOLED Garmin. Independent testing found the touchscreen responsive during sweaty workouts, although wet fingers and a small interface are still less convenient than physical buttons on a sports watch.

The moving hands are charming when the display appears, but users who want instant, highly readable data may find the mechanism distracting. The Trend encourages quick checks rather than extended interaction.

Health and sleep tracking

The Trend covers the main Garmin wellness features, including:

  • Continuous wrist heart-rate monitoring
  • Resting heart rate and high/low heart-rate alerts
  • Stress tracking and Body Battery
  • Respiration rate
  • Sleep tracking and sleep score
  • Pulse Ox spot checks and optional sleep measurement
  • Fitness Age and VO2 Max-related features
  • Steps, floors climbed, calories and intensity minutes
  • Women’s health tracking

For a casual user, the value is in trends. Body Battery can help communicate how sleep, activity and stress are affecting the day, while sleep and stress records can make changes in routine easier to notice. Independent reviews found the general wellness feedback and sleep tracking useful in practice.

Useful does not mean medical-grade. Pulse Ox, stress, Body Battery, sleep scores and similar metrics are estimates intended for wellness purposes. Do not use a watch reading to diagnose or rule out a medical condition.

Quick charging provides up to one full day of smartwatch battery life from approximately 15 minutes of charging, and the watch supports Qi wireless charging pads.

Overnight wear is practical for many users because the watch is relatively light, but enabling Pulse Ox and using more sensors can reduce battery life. Compared with newer Garmin models, the Trend also lacks the depth of advanced training and recovery analysis that serious athletes may expect.

Workout tracking: adequate, not ambitious

The Trend can record basic activities, but its workout capabilities are closer to an activity tracker than a serious training watch. DC Rainmaker reported 14 available sport profiles, with 10 able to remain stored on the device at one time. The exact on-watch experience is comparatively limited: you can record an activity and see essential fields, while Garmin Connect supplies much more detail after synchronization.

That is sufficient for walks, gym sessions, casual cycling and general exercise. Garmin Connect can also pass activities to third-party services such as Strava where supported. However, the Trend does not support:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Built-in GPS
  • Onboard maps
  • Phone-free outdoor route tracking
  • External heart-rate monitors or cycling sensors, according to independent testing
  • Music storage
  • The advanced training features found on more capable Garmin sports watches

GPS is the most important limitation

The vívomove Trend has no standalone GPS receiver. It uses connected GPS supplied by a paired phone. That means you must carry the phone during a run, walk or ride, keep it nearby and maintain a working connection with Garmin Connect.

In practice, GPS startup can be slow or fail when Bluetooth has disconnected, location permissions are restricted, Garmin Connect is not available in the background or the phone’s operating system limits background activity. Distance can be accurate in favourable conditions, but the result depends partly on the phone, its location performance and the app connection. Connected-GPS workouts also consume more battery.

If standalone GPS is a requirement, do not buy the Trend. A Forerunner, vívoactive or Instinct model is a more appropriate direction for phone-free outdoor exercise.

Heart-rate accuracy

The Trend uses Garmin’s Elevate wrist heart-rate sensor and records heart rate during normal use and activities. Independent testing against chest straps and other devices found performance broadly adequate for casual fitness and daily trends.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That is not a promise of chest-strap-equivalent readings in every workout. Optical wrist heart rate is affected by fit, movement, skin contact, exercise intensity and individual physiology. A casual user may find it entirely sufficient; a serious athlete should choose a Garmin with stronger sensor support and compatibility with external heart-rate or cycling sensors. The Trend cannot pair with those external sensors, according to testing.

Battery life and charging

Garmin rates the Trend for:

  • Up to five days in smartwatch mode
  • Up to one additional day in analog-only watch mode
  • Up to one day of smartwatch battery from 15 minutes of charging, according to Garmin

Those are maximum claims, not guaranteed everyday results. Garmin says battery life varies with activity tracking, wrist heart rate, notifications, GPS status, internal sensors and connected sensors. Independent tests reported roughly 30% daily drain with 60–90 minutes of workouts per day, around five days in lighter use and greater drain during connected-GPS activity. Pulse Ox and battery age can reduce endurance further.

In other words, two to three days may be normal for a heavily used or older watch; it is not automatically a fault. Frequent workouts, lots of notifications, screen interaction and overnight Pulse Ox can push the Trend well below its advertised ceiling.

Qi charging is genuinely convenient—within limits

The Trend’s signature improvement over earlier vívomove models is support for most Qi-certified charging pads. Garmin does not include a Qi pad, so buyers must supply one. Garmin also includes a proprietary clip charger, which remains the safer fallback when travelling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Qi charging is valuable if you already have a compatible pad at your desk or bedside. It is less impressive if you expect every wireless charging mat to work. Independent testing found that at least one older, unbranded pad failed, and Garmin warns against incompatible or uncertified chargers. Position the watch correctly, avoid excessive heat and confirm the pad is Qi-certified. During wireless charging, double-tapping the touchscreen can show the battery level.

Smart features

The Trend can show smartphone notifications, calls and calendar reminders. It also includes alarms, timers, a stopwatch, Find My Phone and Garmin Pay, although Garmin Pay depends on participating banks and regional availability.

Android users can use on-watch text responses where supported. iPhone users do not get the same reply functionality because of Apple platform restrictions. Neither platform turns the Trend into a replacement for an Apple Watch, Galaxy Watch or current Garmin AMOLED smartwatch: the display is small, app support is limited and there is no music storage.

The smart features are best for discreet awareness. You can decide whether a notification needs your phone without pulling it from your pocket, but detailed replies and extended interaction still belong on the phone.

Garmin vívomove Trend vs vívoactive 5

The most important comparison is not whether the vívoactive 5 is technically better—it is. The question is whether the Trend’s analog appearance justifies giving up its advantages.

Feature vívomove Trend vívoactive 5
Design Physical analog hands with hidden touchscreen Full digital AMOLED smartwatch
US price observed $269.99 $269.99
Battery claim Up to 5 days smartwatch mode Up to 11 days smartwatch mode
GPS Phone-connected GPS Broader sports functionality, including standalone GPS capability
Music No music storage Music storage
Best for Traditional style and discreet smart features Fitness, display quality and general capability

Choose the Trend if physical hands and a conventional watch appearance are the point. Choose the vívoactive 5 if you want AMOLED readability, longer battery life, music and a more capable fitness experience. Paying the same listed price for the Trend means paying for its design concept rather than maximum functionality.

Who should buy the vívomove Trend?

  • Style-first Garmin users: You want Garmin’s ecosystem but dislike the look of a digital sports watch.
  • Casual wellness trackers: You care about sleep, stress, Body Battery, steps and general trends more than structured training.
  • Phone-carrying exercisers: You normally take your phone on walks, gym sessions and outdoor workouts.
  • Formal-workwear buyers: You value a traditional silhouette and are willing to change the strap for a dressier look.
  • Qi users: You already own a compatible charging pad and appreciate not needing a dedicated cable every night.

Who should avoid it?

  • Runners and cyclists who need built-in GPS
  • Anyone who exercises without a phone
  • Users who rely on chest straps, power meters or cycling sensors
  • People seeking advanced training, recovery or navigation features
  • Buyers who want music without carrying a phone
  • Anyone expecting an AMOLED display or a large, information-rich on-watch experience
  • Users unwilling to accept battery variability with frequent GPS, Pulse Ox and notifications

Common problems and practical fixes

Connected GPS will not start

  1. Confirm Bluetooth is enabled.
  2. Open Garmin Connect and let the watch synchronize.
  3. Check that Garmin Connect has location permission.
  4. Keep the phone nearby and allow Garmin Connect to operate in the background.
  5. Start the activity only after the connection is established.
  6. If necessary, restart both devices and re-pair through Garmin Connect rather than only through the phone’s Bluetooth menu.

Menus vary by Android version, iOS version and Garmin Connect release, so there is no single universal phone path.

Qi charging fails

Confirm that the pad is Qi-certified, reposition the watch, check for excessive heat and remember that some proprietary magnetic mats may be incompatible. Use Garmin’s clip charger as a fallback. Garmin specifically warns against uncertified or incompatible wireless chargers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The battery drains too quickly

Check connected-GPS use, screen interaction, notification volume, Pulse Ox settings, continuous heart-rate tracking and battery age before assuming the watch is defective. Garmin’s five-day figure is an upper-bound estimate under particular conditions.

The hands block the display

The hands are designed to move away when the screen is used, but independent reviewers still found positioning and readability imperfect in some situations. If instant data visibility is more important than the analog look, a full-screen Garmin is the better choice.
