It applied to supported first-generation Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 devices running Wear OS 4, and was primarily a security and maintenance release—not a major feature update or Wear OS upgrade.
Important: this was a phased rollout from July 2024, not an update still rolling out in 2026.

What changed?
The defensible summary is security maintenance. Google described the release as containing the latest security patches and did not announce new watch faces, health features, apps, interface changes, or a major Wear OS upgrade.
In particular, this was not a Wear OS 5 update. The July 5 security level identifies the security patch state; it is separate from the longer firmware build number. Regional or carrier variants may display a slightly different build string, but the official global listing was TWD9.240705.001.A1.
Which Pixel Watches were eligible?
The rollout covered supported:
- Pixel Watch (first generation)
- Pixel Watch 2
The watches needed to be running Wear OS 4. Google did not deliver this July 2024 release simultaneously to every regional or carrier configuration. Pixel Watch 3 was not included: it was introduced later in 2024 and was outside this rollout.

How to check for and install the update
On the watch:
- Swipe down from the watch face.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap System.
- Tap System updates.
- Let the watch check for an available update.
For the best chance of a successful installation, Google recommends placing the watch on its charger, charging it to at least 50%, and connecting it to Wi-Fi. Keep it charging while the update downloads, installs, and reboots the watch.
Google’s complete instructions are available on its Pixel Watch software-update support page.
How to verify the installed build
After the watch finishes rebooting, open:
Settings → System → About → Versions
Check both the build number and Android security update level. For the global July release, the expected values were build TWD9.240705.001.A1 and a July 5, 2024 security level or later. Do not assume that a different regional suffix means the update failed.

Why the update might not appear
The most likely explanation was the phased rollout. Google’s timing varied by carrier and device, so two otherwise similar watches could receive the OTA on different days.
Other practical reasons include:
- The watch was not connected to Wi-Fi.
- The battery was below the installation threshold.
- The watch was not on its charger.
- The update had downloaded but was waiting for suitable charging conditions.
- A temporary pairing or connectivity problem prevented the check from completing.
The official path is simply Settings → System → System updates. A Google support-community expert also suggested repeatedly tapping the checkmark at the top of the update screen, but that is community guidance, not a guaranteed way to force an OTA.
If the update is stuck
Try the least destructive steps first:
- Place the watch on its charger and ensure it has at least 50% battery.
- Confirm that Wi-Fi is enabled and working.
- Restart the watch and check for the update again.
If it still will not update, Google’s recovery sequence is:

Some users in Google’s community discussion reported improved battery life, while others described battery drain, random restarts, charging problems, black screens, or an update stuck at “Update is loading.” These are user reports, not confirmed items in Google’s release notes. The July update should not be presented as either a guaranteed battery fix or the confirmed cause of every subsequent problem.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf the watch behaves differently after updating:
- Reboot it once.
- Check that the charging puck is seated correctly.
- Try the original charging accessories.
- Allow a normal charge cycle before judging battery life.
- Install pending updates for the Pixel Watch app and watch apps.
- Contact Google support if charging, booting, or repeated-restart problems continue.
Do not factory-reset the watch merely because the OTA is delayed or battery life is poor for one day. A reset erases local configuration, requires setup again, and will not necessarily solve a staged rollout or server-side availability issue. Reserve it for persistent pairing or software failures after less destructive troubleshooting and appropriate data syncing.

Should you install it?
If the OTA was offered to your supported Pixel Watch or Pixel Watch 2, installing it was the sensible choice because Google characterized it as a security update. Before starting, sync recent health and activity data, charge the watch, update the phone’s Pixel Watch app, and avoid beginning the installation immediately before a workout, trip, or situation where the watch is important.
