The “special case” is Oura’s official Charging Case: a portable battery enclosure made for the Oura Ring 4 or Oura Ring 5. It can keep a ring powered when you are away from an outlet, reducing the risk of missing overnight sleep and recovery data.
But it does not improve the ring’s single-charge battery life or repair an aging battery. Its real benefit is charging convenience and backup power—not a cure for Oura’s underlying battery limitations.

What problem does the Oura Charging Case solve?
Oura is most useful when worn continuously. A dead ring can mean losing detailed overnight metrics, including Sleep and Readiness Scores, sleep-stage information, HRV, respiratory rate, and resting-heart-rate data. Oura says a ring with very low battery may record bedtime and wake-up times but not the full set of sleep insights. Its guidance recommends charging to at least 30% before bed.
The portable case addresses a specific ownership annoyance: the ring uses a small, size-specific charger, and forgetting it during a trip can interrupt tracking. The case stores enough energy for multiple additional ring charges, so you can recharge from a hotel room, airport, flight, road trip, or campsite without carrying the regular dock or cable as your only charging solution.

That makes “Oura’s biggest flaw” a matter of perspective. For some owners, the biggest issue is charging logistics. For others, it is battery degradation, the subscription fee, scratches, or the need to remove the ring to charge. The case directly addresses only the first problem.
What the case actually does
According to Oura’s charger guide, both generations’ cases can provide up to five ring charges. For Ring 5, Oura describes that capacity as up to one month of power on the go. That is a manufacturer estimate, not a guaranteed number of days: results vary with ring size, settings, features, charging losses, and battery age.
The case itself must first be charged. Ring 5’s case supports USB-C and compatible Qi 1.3 wireless charging. Ring 4’s case uses USB-C, with no equivalent Qi 1.3 charging method listed in Oura’s current comparison information. Oura lists approximately 80 minutes for Ring 5 case or ring charging and approximately 90 minutes for the Ring 4 case, depending on battery level.
Each case weighs approximately 60 grams and measures about 55 × 56 × 17 mm. Oura describes the Ring 4 case as splash-resistant. Neither case should be treated as a way to charge the ring while it remains on your finger: the ring still has to be removed and placed inside.

Ring 4 versus Ring 5: compatibility matters

The cases are not interchangeable. Check both the ring generation and its size before ordering. The Ring 5 case is for Ring 5 sizes 6–13; the Ring 4 case is for Ring 4 models, including Titanium and Ceramic, in sizes 4–15. Oura’s compatibility table is the safest reference because charger fit is size-specific.
How to use the Charging Case
- Confirm compatibility. Match the case to both your ring generation and size.
- Charge the case. Use USB-C. With Ring 5, you can also use a compatible Qi 1.3 pad.
- Pair it with the Oura App. The case connects to your phone over Bluetooth so the app can display its battery level and charging notifications.
- Insert the ring carefully. Reseat and realign it if the charging indicator does not appear.
- Check the charge. Confirm the case LED and the app show that charging has begun.
The app may not show the latest case battery level when your phone is outside Bluetooth range. That can make the battery reading appear outdated without indicating a hardware failure.
Does it fix a failing Oura battery?
No. The case gives you more stored energy, but it does not increase the battery inside the ring. Oura describes rechargeable batteries as consumable: their capacity gradually declines, and the ring battery is non-replaceable. A case cannot reverse aging, restore lost capacity, repair a defective battery, or guarantee the original runtime.

Ring 5 is officially rated for roughly 6–9 days per charge, while Ring 4 is rated for about 5–8 days. Those are typical ranges, not promises for every ring. If a healthy ring is simply out of power because you forgot its charger, the case is relevant. If runtime has fallen from several days to less than one day, buying a case may only give you more chances to recharge a problem.

Before treating rapid drain as normal, compare the ring on its standard charging dock. Check alignment, update the Oura App and firmware, review settings and feature use, and note whether the decline happened gradually or suddenly. Unusual heat, erratic charging, or an abrupt loss of runtime are reasons to contact Oura Support, not automatically to purchase an accessory.
Does it preserve sleep data?
It can reduce the chance of missing a night, especially on travel days. You can charge during a workday, flight, or hotel stay instead of waiting for a wall outlet. That is valuable if uninterrupted sleep and recovery history matter to you.
It does not eliminate every data gap. You still need to remove the ring to charge it, and the ring cannot collect data while it is inside the case. The case therefore improves your ability to recharge at a convenient time; it does not create continuous, on-finger charging.

Oura’s US store currently lists the Charging Case at $99. That is a substantial price for an accessory, particularly because the ring already represents a significant purchase and Oura’s US membership is listed at $5.99 per month or $69.99 per year before tax. The case does not remove or reduce that recurring membership cost.

The price is easier to justify if you travel frequently, regularly forget the standard charger, spend time camping or hiking, or depend on Oura as your primary sleep and recovery tracker. The integrated fit, stored charges, and protection during transport are more convenient than carrying a separate size-specific charger.
It is harder to justify for an owner who mostly charges at home, takes only short trips, or already carries a USB-C power bank and the included charger. Oura’s standard charger is typically enough for occasional charging, and its battery guidance puts standard ring charging at roughly 20–80 minutes depending on battery level.
Availability also varies by region. Oura lists the cases in the US, Canada, the EU, and the UK, with regional exclusions. Case-only orders must ship by ground because the case contains a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. Check the supported-country information and the Oura store for local pricing and availability.

Use this distinction:
- Forgotten or inconvenient charger: The case is a sensible solution.
- Travel without reliable outlets: The case is useful, especially for trips longer than your remaining ring charge.
- Low battery before bed: The case can reduce the risk of a missed night, but it still requires removing the ring.
- Short single-charge runtime: The case does not fix it.
- Battery degradation: Contact Oura or investigate the ring; do not treat the case as a repair.
- Defective charging or rapid drain: Test the standard dock and follow Oura’s troubleshooting process.
- Subscription cost: The case does nothing to address it.
- Scratches: The case may protect the ring in a bag, but it is not a protective shell worn over the ring.
If the ring will not charge in the case
- Make sure the case itself has power.
- Confirm that it is paired with the Oura App.
- Remove and reseat the ring.
- Recheck generation and size compatibility.
- Update the app and ring or case firmware.
- For Ring 5 wireless charging, reposition the case on the Qi 1.3 pad.
- Switch to USB-C if wireless charging remains unreliable.
- Test the ring on the regular charging dock.
- Contact Oura if it fails on both chargers.
If the ring is stuck in a charger, Oura recommends gently sliding a flat, non-sharp object such as a credit card between the ring and charger from the side. Do not use a knife, pin, or other sharp tool.

Who should buy it?
Buy the Ring 5 case if you own a Ring 5 in size 6–13, travel for several days at a time, value continuous tracking, and are willing to pay $99 for roughly five stored charges and the added convenience of Qi 1.3 charging.
Buy the Ring 4 case if you own a Ring 4 in size 4–15 and want the same basic travel benefit, while accepting USB-C charging and Ring 4-only compatibility.
Keep the standard charger if you mainly charge at home or already have a USB-C power bank. It is the more economical option when the problem is only occasional travel.
Contact Oura instead if your ring’s battery has sharply deteriorated, fails to charge normally, becomes unusually warm, or behaves erratically. Buying a case for a failing ring is unlikely to solve the underlying fault.
Verdict
Oura’s Charging Case is a meaningful quality-of-life upgrade, especially for frequent travelers and owners who care about uninterrupted overnight data. It solves the practical problem of being away from the ring’s charger and can provide up to five additional charges.
Calling it a fix for Oura’s biggest flaw is too broad. The case does not improve single-charge battery life, reverse battery aging, repair hardware, eliminate the subscription, or let you charge while wearing the ring. Buy it when your problem is access to power; troubleshoot or replace the ring when your problem is that its battery no longer holds a charge.
