It has a titanium inner case with zirconia ceramic outer shells and bezel, and it runs the 9R96 caliber. This guide covers the official specifications, how the movement works, and how SBGC017 differs from its siblings. One caveat applies to the title: “hands-on” here means a close reading of Grand Seiko and Seiko’s published material. It does not describe wrist time with the watch, so comfort, finishing and button feel are not covered.

The movement: caliber 9R96
Grand Seiko describes the 9R96 as a specially adjusted version of caliber 9R86. It is an automatic Spring Drive 3-day chronograph GMT that can also be wound by hand. Its listed functions are:
- Power-reserve indicator
- Dual time with a 24-hour hand
- Calendar time-difference correction
- Stopwatch (chronograph)
What Spring Drive means
A mainspring supplies the energy, and the Tri-synchro Regulator provides electronic regulation. The watch is not battery-powered and is not a quartz watch in the usual sense. This is how Grand Seiko describes the system.

- Three-fold clasp with push button release
- Dual-curved sapphire crystal
- Power reserve display on the back
- Power resrve Approx. 72 hours(3 days)
The chronograph design
According to Grand Seiko, a column wheel controls start and stop. A vertical clutch is meant to stop the seconds hand from jumping when timing begins. Operation is a two-step READY/START action. These are the maker’s descriptions of design and intended use, not test findings.
Case and materials
Seiko’s launch announcement says: “The inner case is made from high-intensity titanium and the outer shells and bezel are zirconia ceramic which is stronger and tougher than any other fine ceramic and seven times harder on the Vickers scale than stainless steel.” The hardness comparison is the company’s claim and has not been independently verified. The announcement also says the case is 25% lighter than stainless steel, which is likewise a manufacturer figure and not a wear-test result.

- Featuring a Black Band, Silver-tone Case, Scratch Resistant Hardlex Crystal
- Box-shaped Hardlex crystal
- Second hand halt mechanism (Hacking)
The same announcement lists a dual-curved sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating, a screw see-through case back and a screw-down crown. At 46.4 mm by 16.1 mm it is a large watch on paper. The announcement does not say how that size wears, and only a person who has tried one on can answer that.
Where SBGC017 sits in the 2016 collection
| Reference | Type | Limit | Case (diameter × thickness) |
|---|---|---|---|
| SBGC017 | Chronograph GMT, 9R96 | 600 | 46.4 × 16.1 mm |
| SBGC015 | Chronograph GMT, 9R96 | 500 | 46.4 × 16.1 mm |
| SBGE037 | GMT, 9R16 | 500 | 46.4 × 15.0 mm |
| SBGE039 | GMT, 9R16 | 500 | 46.4 × 15.0 mm |
SBGC017 and SBGC015 share the 9R96 specification and differ in design details. The announcement gives collection-level information, not a per-reference table of dial and strap configuration. Check those details against model-specific photos or a trustworthy listing before you assume them. Don’t confuse SBGC017 with later chronograph GMT references such as SBGC219, SBGC221 or SBGC223.
