The Grand Seiko SBGP017 is a 2022 limited-edition quartz watch marking 55 years of the 44GS design. Its blue-toned, textured dial evokes clouds over Shinshu, while its Caliber 9F85 is specified by Grand Seiko to run within ±5 seconds per year under stated temperature conditions. What is the Grand Seiko SBGP017?
The SBGP017 belongs to Grand Seiko’s Heritage Collection and is designated the 44GS 55th Anniversary Limited Edition. The 44GS design debuted in 1967; Grand Seiko says it first embodied the design code known as “Grand Seiko Style.” The SBGP017 commemorates that design milestone in a stainless-steel, quartz-powered watch.
Grand Seiko announced the model on 7 June 2022 and said it would be available in July 2022. Its original distribution was through Grand Seiko boutiques and selected retailers worldwide. What do the dial and case details signify?
A Shinshu-inspired blue dial
The blue-toned, textured dial is inspired by the sea of clouds gathering above Shinshu. Grand Seiko says its quartz watches are made in Shinshu, Japan. At six o’clock, a five-pointed star marks the watch’s high-accuracy specification. In the manufacturer’s words, “The five-pointed star at the six o’clock position symbolizes the watch’s high accuracy.”

44GS styling and visible movement
The case pairs Zaratsu-polished surfaces with hairline finishing, as described by Grand Seiko. A transparent sapphire case back shows the movement, including screws that the company describes as tempered blue. These finishing and movement details are the manufacturer’s descriptions, not independent assessments.
How accurate is the SBGP017, and what does Caliber 9F85 do?
The SBGP017 uses quartz Caliber 9F85. Grand Seiko states accuracy of +5 to −5 seconds per year when the watch is used between 5°C and 35°C. This is the manufacturer’s specification; it is not an independently tested result, and the stated temperature range is part of the claim.

The movement’s time-difference adjustment lets the wearer move the hour hand without stopping the seconds hand, which Grand Seiko says helps preserve precision when changing time zones. The company also describes a backlash auto-adjust mechanism intended to prevent seconds-hand shudder, a twin-pulse control system designed to move longer and heavier hands, and a quick date change.

How many were made, and what was the launch price?
Grand Seiko limited the SBGP017 to 2,000 pieces worldwide. The 2022 announcement gave regional launch-era prices rather than one global price: approximately €3,800 in Europe. Grand Seiko Canada stated CAD 4,900, and Grand Seiko Boutique Thailand stated THB 146,000. Those figures describe the original regional launch pricing; they are not current retail or resale valuations. The available announcement does not establish present stock, asking prices, or resale performance.
