It pairs a 36.5 mm stainless-steel case and bracelet with a pink-toned dial inspired by cherry blossoms partly hidden by lingering snow. Inside is the hand-wound Calibre 9S64, with an approximately 72-hour power reserve. Grand Seiko announced worldwide production limited to 1,200 watches; that launch figure does not establish present-day availability or resale value.
What is the Grand Seiko SBGW289?
SBGW289 is a mechanical watch in Grand Seiko’s Heritage Collection, introduced in 2022 to mark 55 years of the 44GS design. Grand Seiko traces the 44GS to 1967 and says it established the design language known as Grand Seiko Style. The SBGW289 retains the flat surfaces and sharp angles associated with that design in a compact, contemporary case.

Grand Seiko’s Japanese announcement, dated April 12, 2022, said the watch would be released early through its online boutique on April 22, followed by sales at boutiques, salons, and master shops from June 10. Those are historical launch dates, not confirmation that the watch is currently available.
How limited is the SBGW289?
Grand Seiko announced worldwide production of 1,200 pieces. Its Japanese release specified that 150 of those were allocated to Japan. The allocation figure describes the Japanese launch plan; it does not indicate how many watches remain there or elsewhere today.

A limited production run makes the model distinctive, but it does not by itself establish future appreciation or a current market price. The launch releases do not report present inventory or resale values.
Case, dial, and design
Compact 44GS proportions
The stainless-steel case measures 36.5 mm across, excluding the crown, and 11.6 mm thick. A box-shaped sapphire crystal with an inner anti-reflective coating protects the dial. Water resistance is rated to 10 bar. Grand Seiko’s New Zealand announcement also lists magnetic resistance of 4,800 A/m and a three-fold clasp with push-button release.
“Sakura-kakushi” dial
Grand Seiko names the dial’s inspiration “Sakura-kakushi”: a spring scene in which cherry blossoms emerge through lingering snow. The subtle texture and pink tone give the watch a softer expression than the sharp, reflective geometry of the case. Grand Seiko attributes the distortion-free case surfaces to hand-applied Zaratsu polishing.

The company says the slim hand-wound movement supports the watch’s 36.5 mm profile. It also states that the movement is assembled by hand at Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi.

The SBGW289 uses Grand Seiko’s manual-winding Calibre 9S64. The manufacturer specifies 28,800 vibrations per hour (eight beats per second), 24 jewels, and an approximately 72-hour power reserve. The reserve is a manufacturer-stated figure, not an independently measured result.
Grand Seiko gives a mean daily rate of +5 to −3 seconds per day as the movement’s static accuracy specification. Its Japanese announcement separately provides a wearing accuracy guide of +10 to −1 seconds per day. These figures describe different conditions and should not be treated as interchangeable guarantees of how every individual watch will perform.

Launch prices and what they mean now
At launch in 2022, Grand Seiko listed a Japanese suggested retail price of ¥627,000 including tax. Its New Zealand release listed a recommended retail price of NZ$9,200. These were region-specific launch prices; neither is a current quote or an estimate of today’s market value.
If considering a pre-owned or remaining-stock example, verify the seller, condition, documentation, and authenticity. The launch information identifies Grand Seiko boutiques and selected retailers as original sales channels, but does not establish current stock at any seller.
Who the SBGW289 may suit
The SBGW289 is a plausible choice for someone seeking a relatively compact, manually wound Grand Seiko with a distinctive spring-inspired dial and a historically significant 44GS case design. Its stated 72-hour reserve offers more than two days between full winds, while its 36.5 mm diameter may appeal to buyers who prefer smaller watches. Fit remains personal: case shape, wrist size, and bracelet adjustment matter as much as diameter.
Quick Recap
- Consider it if: you want a hand-wound movement, a restrained pink dial, and a limited anniversary model in a compact steel case.
- Compare carefully if: your priorities include an automatic movement, a larger case, or a current price supported by recent market listings.
