Seiko’s published specifications make it a substantial watch on paper; they do not tell you how a particular wrist will fit it or whether a used example remains water resistant. Here’s what the model offers and what to check before buying one.
What the SRPC49 is—and why it is called the Black Series
Seiko introduced the SRPC49 as part of its 2018 Black Series, a collection inspired by night diving. The company highlights the black hard coating, orange minute hand and LumiBrite as defining elements of the design. Seiko’s official model name is SRPC49; SRPC49K1 is a reference used for the watch in some listings. “Ninja Turtle” is a community and market nickname, not Seiko’s official name for it. Seiko’s SRPC49 specifications and its Black Series description provide the manufacturer’s details.
Seiko describes the Black Series as “inspired by the world of night diving.” That explains the dark treatment and bright orange minute hand, but it is a design brief rather than a measured claim about visibility underwater. The available specifications do not establish lume duration or real-world legibility.

Figures and materials in this table are Seiko’s published specifications for the model, not measurements of an individual watch. The 45.0 mm diameter and 13.4 mm thickness suggest a sizeable case, but dimensions alone cannot determine how it will sit on your wrist. If fit matters, try one on or confirm the seller’s return policy before committing. Seiko’s product page is the source for the listed dimensions and movement details.

Movement and everyday functions
The 4R36 is an automatic movement that can also be wound manually. Seiko lists a stop-seconds function, so the seconds hand stops when the crown is pulled to the appropriate setting position, and a day/date display. Its stated power reserve is about 41 hours, with 24 jewels. These are the manufacturer’s figures; no independent accuracy or reserve test is established here.
What the 200 m rating means for a used SRPC49
Seiko lists the SRPC49 as a 200 m / 660 ft diver’s watch with a unidirectional rotating bezel and screw case back. Its Black Series description says the watch was designed and manufactured to withstand diving to 200 m and that the crown has screw-down protection to help prevent accidental pulling. That is Seiko’s description of the model, not a present-day pressure test of any particular watch.

Age, condition and service history matter when assessing a used watch’s water resistance. Do not assume a decades-old or previously worn example still meets its original rating. If you intend to swim or dive with one, have a qualified watchmaker test its water resistance and address any necessary service before use.
What to check before buying an SRPC49 or SRPC49K1
Seiko’s Philippines store page displayed the SRPC49K1 as sold out when checked; that regional listing does not establish worldwide stock or current secondary-market value. As a limited 2018 edition, it may be encountered through resale listings. Treat each watch and seller on its own merits rather than assuming that an available listing is genuine or in good condition.

- AUTOMATIC MOVEMENT: Seiko 4R35 automatic movement includes manual winding, 23 jewels, date display, stop-second function, and approximately 41 hours of power reserve.
- 200M DIVER'S WATER RESISTANCE: Rated to 200 meters / 660 feet for diving, with a screw-down crown and screw case back.
- STAINLESS-STEEL CASE: 41.7mm stainless-steel case measures 12.3mm thick with a 49.5mm lug-to-lug distance and 20mm lug width.
- HARDLEX CRYSTAL: Durable Hardlex crystal protects the dial, while LumiBrite on the hands, indexes, and bezel improves low-light visibility.
- DIVER-READY DESIGN: Unidirectional rotating bezel and three-fold clasp with secure lock, push-button release, and extender provide practical functionality.
- Confirm the reference. Check that the listing identifies the watch as SRPC49 or SRPC49K1 and that photographs and details are consistent with that model.
- Inspect condition. Ask for clear photographs of the case, coating, crystal, bezel, crown, case back and strap. The coating’s durability on an individual watch cannot be inferred from the model specification.
- Ask about service. Request any available service records and ask whether water resistance has been tested recently. A factory rating is not a substitute for condition-specific testing.
- Clarify what is included. Confirm whether the box, papers and original strap are present if those matter to you.
- Read the return terms. Make sure you understand the seller’s return policy and what remedies are available if the watch differs from the description.
No current market price or global availability figure is established by the cited Seiko pages. Compare actual listings by condition, service evidence and included items rather than treating the model’s original specifications as a guide to resale value.
Strap sizing and replacement options
The SRPC49 has 22 mm lug spacing, which gives you a starting point when looking for a replacement strap. A retailer lists Seiko’s R02F011M0 black silicone strap as compatible with the SRPC49K1. That is retailer-reported compatibility, so confirm the exact reference and fit with the seller before ordering. A strap that is nominally 22 mm wide may not match the original’s shape, clearance or appearance. Seiko’s specification page lists the lug spacing; the retailer’s compatibility listing is here.

How it relates to Seiko’s Turtle models
A 2018 Fratello hands-on article described the SRPC49 as mechanically and physically identical to the SRP7xx Turtle models. That is a period comparison, not proof that every component, condition or current-market detail is interchangeable. If you are choosing between a Black Series SRPC49 and another Turtle-family diver, compare the same practical points: dimensions, lug width and strap, case and crystal materials, movement and functions, water-resistance design, legibility, and the condition and service history of the specific watch you are considering. Fratello’s 2018 article gives the original comparison context.
