Greubel Forsey’s QP Balancier is a limited-edition perpetual calendar built around what the brand calls its seventh invention: a “Mechanical Computer” that coordinates the calendar’s indications. Greubel Forsey says the watch can be set and adjusted in both directions with a single crown. Its current collection page lists 22 timepieces; it does not confirm a current price or inventory status.
What is the Greubel Forsey QP Balancier?
The QP Balancier is a white-gold wristwatch combining a perpetual calendar, equation of time indications and a Tourbillon 24 Secondes. Its defining feature, according to Greubel Forsey, is the Mechanical Computer: coaxially stacked coding wheels fitted with removable, programmable fingers. These elements are designed to coordinate the calendar’s display and adjustment. The brand presents this mechanism as its seventh invention. How does its perpetual calendar work?
A perpetual calendar accounts for the varying lengths of months and the leap-year cycle, so its calendar indications do not need the frequent manual correction required by simpler calendar mechanisms. Greubel Forsey’s approach uses the Mechanical Computer’s stacked coding wheels and programmable fingers to coordinate those indications. The collection page describes the calendar as bidirectional and says the watch is set and adjusted with one crown, in both directions.
Greubel Forsey states: “Despite its mechanical complexity, the QP Balancier is set and adjusted with a single crown — in both directions, without risk of damage to the mechanism.” This is the manufacturer’s description of the design, not an independently verified test result.
