Published descriptions place its production start around 1967 and report a 36 mm stainless-steel case, an automatic Hamilton 64A movement, and dial variants including “Cape Horn” and “Aquadate.” Those details can help identify an example, but they do not establish its present condition or water resistance.
What is the Hamilton 600 Diver?
The Hamilton 600 is a vintage automatic diver described in published accounts as a late-1960s model. Fratello Watches places the start of production at roughly 1967, while a vintage dealer also describes the Cape Horn as launching in 1967. These are secondary accounts, not an official Hamilton production record, so treat the date as a useful period reference rather than a definitive date for every watch.
The family includes dial-wording variations. Examples are described with “Cape Horn” or “Aquadate” on the dial; a simpler version may use “automatic.” Check the actual dial and the rest of the watch together rather than identifying a specimen from one word alone. Fratello Watches’ 2016 model account and the Vintage Watch Co. Cape Horn listing provide secondary descriptions of the family.
Reported specifications and identifying features
| Feature | Reported detail | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Production period | Roughly 1967 onward, according to Fratello Watches (2016); the dealer source also gives a 1967 launch date. | Use as a period-level guide, not a verified production date for an individual watch. |
| Case | 36 mm stainless steel; described as an EPSA-made, super-compressor-style case. | Compare the case and its construction with the dial and movement when evaluating identity. |
| Bezel and crowns | Internal rotating bezel operated by the upper crown; twin crowns. | Check whether the crown turns the bezel and whether the bezel moves smoothly. Operation alone does not prove the watch is complete or original. |
| Movement | Automatic Hamilton 64A, also identified as ETA 2452; date reportedly has no quick-set function. | Have a watchmaker verify the movement and assess its condition. The identification is a published model description, not evidence about a particular example. |
| Power reserve | About 42 hours, as reported by Fratello Watches (2016). | This is a model-level published figure, not a measurement of a candidate watch. |
| Lug width | 18 mm, as reported by Fratello Watches (2016). | Measure the specific watch before choosing a strap; actual spring-bar fit also matters. |
| Depth marking | The case back is described as marked for 600 feet. | This is a historical marking, not a current water-resistance test result. |
The dimensions and features above are reported by Fratello Watches; the 600-foot marking and Cape Horn family description are also noted by Vintage Watch Co. Historical specifications help with identification, but they cannot confirm that a watch has retained its original parts or remains functional.

How to evaluate an example before buying
A vintage watch should be assessed as an individual object. A persuasive dial or case-back marking does not substitute for checking the movement, controls, and condition. Ask a qualified watchmaker to examine the watch before purchase when possible.
Confirm the identity and variant
- Record the exact dial wording, including whether it says “Cape Horn,” “Aquadate,” or “automatic.”
- Compare the dial, case, crowns, internal bezel, and movement as a group; do not rely on a single feature to establish authenticity.
- Ask whether any parts have been replaced or refinished and whether the seller can document the watch’s history.
Inspect the dial, lume, and case
- Look closely at dial and lume condition and ask whether any restoration or reluming is known.
- Check the case and both crowns for wear or damage, and note whether the upper crown operates the internal bezel.
- Assess completeness and overall condition rather than treating age or a depth marking as a proxy for quality.
Ask about service and parts
Service evidence matters because an old watch may need attention even if it runs. Fratello Watches cautions that crystals, crowns, and hands can be difficult to source, and that worn teeth in the internal-bezel mechanism may be effectively unrepairable. The vintage specialist Wolfe Vintage Watches also describes general risks associated with aged movement lubrication and corrosion. These are ownership cautions, not findings about every Hamilton 600 or any particular specimen. Ask the seller for service records and have a watchmaker assess the movement and bezel mechanism.

Check fit and strap compatibility
The reported lug width is 18 mm, but measure the watch you are considering instead of assuming every example or spring-bar fit is identical. Choose a strap that fits the measured lugs and the specific spring bars; the historical model description does not imply Hamilton endorsement of any modern strap.

No. The case-back marking is a historical specification as reported in secondary sources; it does not establish present-day water resistance. The available sources do not document a water-resistance test for any individual watch. Seals and other components can deteriorate with age, so treat a vintage example as having unknown water resistance unless that exact watch has been appropriately inspected and tested. Do not use the marking alone as a reason to take it underwater.
