Its appeal is clear if you enjoy winding a watch and want classic motorsport styling; its 49 mm lug-to-lug and 14.35 mm thickness make trying it on especially worthwhile. The name covers several references and dial colors, so check the reference—not just the family name—when comparing listings.
What the Intra-Matic Chronograph H is
The “H” is the hand-wound member of Hamilton’s Intra-Matic chronograph family. It uses the mechanical H-51 caliber and has no date display. It is not the automatic Intra-Matic Chrono: winding is part of the daily interaction. Hamilton specifies a 60-hour power reserve for both the older black H38429130 and the blue H38429541. Hamilton’s H38429130 specifications and Hamilton Canada’s H38429541 listing identify the movement and reserve.
The H-51 is a chronograph movement: the central seconds hand measures elapsed time when the chronograph is running, while the two subdials provide small seconds and a 30-minute counter. Hamilton lists a tachymeter scale and Super-LumiNova on the black reference’s product page. Fratello’s 2026 coverage reports a 4 Hz (28,800 vph) beat rate, 27 jewels, and a Nivachron balance spring; those are publication-reported movement details, rather than figures shown on the cited Hamilton product pages. Fratello’s 2026 introduction provides that breakdown.
How it wears: 40 mm is only part of the story
Hamilton lists a 40 mm case diameter, 49 mm lug-to-lug, 14.35 mm thickness, and 20 mm lug width for both H38429130 and H38429541. The relatively long lug span and substantial height matter as much as the diameter when judging fit, especially on a smaller wrist or beneath a close-fitting cuff.

In a review published on April 20, 2026, webChronos described about a week with the blue H38429541 and noted that the lugs extended far enough to leave a gap between case and wrist. That is one reviewer’s wearing experience, not a universal fit verdict or a long-term test. Try the watch on if possible; wrist shape and personal tolerance for a tall case affect how these dimensions feel. Read the webChronos wearing review.
Design and the 2026 dial choices
The Intra-Matic Chronograph H draws on Hamilton’s 1968 Chronographs A and B. The line’s two-register layout and tachymeter evoke vintage motorsport instruments, while a box-shaped sapphire crystal and modern water-resistance rating bring contemporary materials and specifications. Hodinkee covered the original 2021 release and its panda and reverse-panda dial approach. Hodinkee’s 2021 introduction describes that lineage.

Reference matters because the family includes distinct colors and market listings:
| Reference | Dial and status | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| H38429130 | Black dial; Hamilton marks it “Past collection.” | The official listing gives the core specifications discussed here. Availability may be through remaining or secondary-market stock. |
| H38429541 | Blue dial with silver subdials and orange chronograph hands; 2026 addition. | Listed by Hamilton Canada. Its price and inventory status are specific to that regional listing and date. |
| H38429861 | Hunter-green gradient dial; 2026 addition. | Fratello reports that the dial darkens toward the edges. |
| H38429591 | Warm-brown gradient dial; 2026 addition. | Fratello reports that the dial darkens toward the edges. |
The newer color variants are presented with perforated leather and mesh-bracelet wearing options in Fratello’s coverage. Confirm the exact package with the seller: Hamilton’s regional product listing and editorial coverage may describe bundles differently. A 20 mm lug width does not by itself guarantee that an aftermarket bracelet or fitted end links will suit a particular reference.

Who should consider it—and who may prefer another watch
It makes sense if you want
- A mechanical chronograph whose winding is a deliberate part of wearing it.
- A two-register, no-date dial with a clear 1960s motorsport influence.
- Modern sapphire crystal and a 10 bar rating alongside vintage-inspired styling.
- A choice among black, blue, green, or brown dials, subject to the reference’s regional availability.
Look elsewhere or try carefully if you need
- An automatic or quartz watch that does not ask for regular manual winding.
- A shorter lug span or a thinner case; the stated 49 mm span and 14.35 mm height could be challenging on some wrists.
- A guaranteed two-strap bundle or a confirmed bracelet fit without checking the exact seller package and reference.
How to choose the right listing
- Match the reference. Check the product listing and warranty card for H38429130, H38429541, H38429861, or H38429591; the family name alone does not identify the dial.
- Check your fit priorities. Compare the 49 mm lug-to-lug and 14.35 mm height as well as the 40 mm diameter, and try the watch on if you are uncertain about lug reach or case height.
- Confirm what is included. Ask whether that specific regional package includes a perforated leather strap, a mesh bracelet, or both, and verify compatibility before buying another bracelet.
- Compare local terms. Check current local price, availability, seller, and warranty rather than relying on an old stock listing or another country’s launch price.
