The Hamilton Khaki Field Expedition is an automatic field-style watch with a compass-design rotating bezel, screw-down crown and 100m water-resistance rating. The 37mm has the shorter reported lug-to-lug length; the better fit depends on your wrist and how much presence you want from a watch.
What distinguishes the Khaki Field Expedition?
Unlike a simpler field watch with a fixed timing bezel, the Expedition adds a rotating bezel marked for compass use. Hamilton describes it as a way to help navigate using the sun, rather than as a substitute for a conventional compass or a validated navigation method. The watch also has a screw-down crown and a 10 bar (100m) water-resistance rating, according to Hamilton’s surfaced US product pages.
Hamilton lists an H-10 automatic movement with an 80-hour power reserve and a sapphire crystal on the configurations discussed below. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance-test results. The exact dial, bracelet or strap, and dimensions can vary by reference, so check the reference number rather than assuming every Expedition listing is identical.
How does the compass bezel work?
The bezel is an analog aid for orienting yourself with the sun. In general, the method depends on your hemisphere and the position of the sun: you align the watch and use the bezel markings according to the appropriate technique to estimate a direction. The bezel does not sense magnetic north, and its usefulness depends on having the sun visible and applying the correct method. Fratello’s launch-era overview explains the general compass-bezel concept, but Hamilton’s own product descriptions make the narrower claim that the design can help with navigation using the sun.

For backcountry travel or any situation where a navigation error could put someone at risk, carry and know how to use a proper compass and map or another validated navigation system. Treat the watch bezel as a supplementary aid, not your sole means of finding direction.
37mm or 41mm: which size should you choose?
Case diameter is only one part of fit. Hodinkee’s 2023 review reports a 44mm lug-to-lug length for the 37mm model and 48mm for the 41mm, with a 20mm lug width for both. Those lug-to-lug figures help explain why the smaller case may sit more compactly, but wrist shape, the spacing of the lugs and personal preference all affect how a watch wears. There is no reliable wrist-circumference cutoff that makes one size the right choice for everyone.

The thickness figures above are tied to the specific Hamilton references named; they should not be generalized to every Expedition configuration. If possible, try both sizes and check whether the lugs extend beyond the top of your wrist or feel intrusive when you bend your hand. A photograph or diameter alone cannot reliably answer that fit question.

What to check before choosing a configuration
- Fit: Compare the case diameter and lug-to-lug length, then try the watch on if you can.
- Dial and bracelet: Confirm the reference, dial color and whether it comes on a bracelet or strap. The white-dial H70225110, for example, is listed on a stainless-steel 3-link bracelet.
- Strap compatibility: A 20mm strap may suit a configuration with 20mm lugs, but verify the exact reference and attachment compatibility before purchasing a replacement.
- Navigation expectations: The bezel is intended as a sun-assisted compass aid; it is not a magnetic compass or a validated safety-navigation system.
- Local purchase details: Check current regional pricing, stock, warranty and service arrangements with Hamilton or an authorized seller in your market.
