Hamilton’s approach, as CEO Vivian Stauffer described it in a December 2023 interview, was to use the brand’s history as a starting point for new watches—not simply reproduce its past. He discussed the Khaki Field Expedition, changing buyer habits, rising costs, film collaborations and the long lead time behind product decisions. How Hamilton’s past informs its future
Hamilton marked its 130th anniversary in 2022. In an interview published by MONOCHROME on 13 December 2023, Stauffer said the milestone prompted the brand to look closely at its roots while considering what it wanted future audiences to remember about its work.
“Looking back is good, and we have the chance to explore our strong history, but we also have to create tomorrow’s story,” he said. That distinction matters: Stauffer described heritage as material for design and storytelling, not a requirement to repeat old models unchanged. He also cautioned against letting Hamilton become defined only by a vintage identity.
What the Khaki Field Expedition adds
Stauffer connected the Khaki collection to Hamilton’s military-watch history and described the Khaki Field Expedition as a way to add a new option to the field-watch family without losing its tool-watch character. The interview identifies several design features: a turning bezel, shorter lug-to-lug dimension, anti-reflective crystal and screw-down crown. He framed the watch as suited to outdoor activity.

Stauffer said customer feedback informed features in the Expedition and is considered throughout product development. He described Hamilton’s fan community as active, while noting that ideas take time to become products. The interview does not identify an exact reference or establish case size, movement, water resistance, current price or availability, so those details should be checked against the specific model listing rather than inferred from his comments.
Other collection development in 2023
Jazzmaster Performer
Stauffer also highlighted the Jazzmaster Performer as a sport-oriented addition to a comparatively young collection that he distinguished from the Khaki line. He said its launch had been soft at first but was gaining traction by the time of the interview. This is his assessment of performance in late 2023, not a current sales update or an independently reported result.

Why the product cycle shapes Hamilton’s choices
Stauffer put Hamilton’s product-development timeline at about two years from development through production and distribution. He said that long cycle means decisions about the brand’s direction must be made well before a watch reaches buyers.
“Right now, we’re already working on 2025, 2026 and beyond in regards to which direction we want to take the brand,” he said in 2023. That statement describes the planning horizon at the time, not a confirmed roadmap for those years or for the present.

What Stauffer said about buyers and sales channels
Stauffer contrasted older enthusiasts, who he said often preferred buying from physical retailers, with younger customers who were more comfortable purchasing online. He put Hamilton’s e-commerce share at about 40% of sales at the time of the interview. That figure is his 2023 statement and should not be treated as a current channel breakdown or a market-wide trend.
The challenges Hamilton faced in 2023
Stauffer identified pricing pressure as a major challenge. He pointed to rising costs for materials, electricity, distribution and shipping, and said the roughly two-year path from development to distribution made it harder to anticipate changing conditions. His comments describe the challenges he cited in 2023; they do not verify current costs or explain any particular present-day retail price.

He also reflected on the disruption around the pandemic, when he had started in the role. “My key learning, however, since I started in the middle of the pandemic, is not to be too dependent on one specific thing,” he said. In context, that was a lesson about avoiding reliance on a single factor in a period of uncertainty, rather than a detailed account of Hamilton’s operating strategy.

Stauffer described three ways Hamilton watches have been used in productions: studios can select from a changing range of current watches; the company can source vintage watches; or it can develop prop watches for a production. He cited Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Oppenheimer and Interstellar as examples.

He said the Boulton attracted more interest and sales after appearing in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, but the interview gives no measured sales increase. The example illustrates how a film placement can bring attention to a model; it does not establish that every placement has the same commercial effect.
What the interview does—and does not—tell watch buyers
Stauffer’s account offers a useful view of how Hamilton was thinking about heritage, product development and market pressures in late 2023. It is not a current company filing or product catalog. For a buying decision, verify the exact Khaki Field Expedition reference and its specifications, price and availability with a current model listing or retailer. The interview itself supports the collection’s design rationale, but not a present-day recommendation based on price or technical performance.
