The Alpina Startimer Pilot Heritage Manufacture stands out because its AL-709 automatic movement uses a modernized bumper-style winding weight—not just because the watch borrows vintage pilot-watch cues. The weight travels 330 degrees before meeting a stop, a distinctive arrangement that gives the watch a different feel from a conventional freely rotating rotor. The collection has appeared in several limited editions, and their published case dimensions and prices vary by release.
What is a bumper movement?
A bumper is an automatic winding system in which the oscillating weight does not rotate continuously around the movement. In the historical arrangement described by Monochrome Watches, the weight moved through a 120-degree arc and springs at the ends of its travel sent it back in the opposite direction. That back-and-forth action is the origin of the name.
Alpina’s AL-709 revisits that architecture with a different construction. Monochrome reports that its weight travels 330 degrees, with a blade and hard-stop arrangement replacing the traditional bumper springs. Hodinkee also describes the extended travel and modified impact arrangement. The design preserves the unusual bumper concept while allowing a much longer arc than the historical 120-degree version; the sources do not establish a measured efficiency advantage over conventional full-rotor automatics.
What the AL-709 is like to wear
In Hodinkee’s hands-on review of the later blue-dial watch, reviewer Mark Kauzlarich described feeling and hearing a hard jolt when the weight reached its stop. He initially found the sensation disconcerting, then came to appreciate the mechanism and the dial. He also raised a question about long-term impact durability while noting that he was not a watchmaker. That is a reviewer’s impression and uncertainty, not evidence that the AL-709 is unreliable; the cited coverage does not report independent durability testing.

AL-709 specifications and release differences
The 2021 launch and the later blue-dial release should be treated separately. Monochrome reported the initial references with a 42 mm cushion-shaped case and 13.25 mm height; Hodinkee reported 40.75 mm for its later blue-dial example. Both sources give 100 m water resistance. The coverage does not resolve whether the diameter difference reflects a changed case, a measurement convention, or reporting variance.

What the edition sizes and prices mean today
Each release described above was limited to 188 pieces. The prices in the table are historical launch or review-era figures, not current retail prices or a guide to resale value. Hodinkee’s statement that the blue-dial edition appeared sold out applies to its January 2023 publication; it does not establish present availability. Current stock and market value are not established by the cited coverage.
Anyone considering a listing should verify the reference, condition, seller and asking price, and confirm that the specific watch is actually available. The AL-709SR4SH6 and AL-709SR4SH5 identify the initial steel and gold-plated references; a listing described only as a Startimer may refer to a different model or release.

How it fits into Alpina’s Startimer range
The AL-709 Heritage Manufacture is an older, limited-edition branch of the Startimer line, not a specification template for current Startimer automatics. Alpina’s current Startimer collection page describes newer Pilot Automatic models using the AL-525 caliber and a 68-hour reserve. Its US product page for the AL-525BBG4S26 lists a 41 mm automatic model. Those current-model details do not update the AL-709’s specifications.
