Hands-On: Fortis Novonaut N-42 Titanium Legacy (F2040017)

The Fortis Novonaut N-42 Titanium Legacy is the lighter, regular-production titanium take on Fortis’s black-dial N-42 chronograph. It keeps the substantial 42 mm case, 200 m water resistance and automatic Werk 17 column-wheel chronograph, while Fratello’s reviewer reports a bracelet weight of 161 g versus 225 g for the steel version. Its titanium construction makes it more wearable by weight, but the 51 mm lug-to-lug length and 15 mm thickness still matter more than the 42 mm diameter alone when judging fit.

What the Titanium Legacy is

Fortis lists the Novonaut N-42 Titanium Legacy on its Block titanium bracelet; Fratello identifies this version as reference F2040017. In Jorg Weppelink’s March 14, 2025 hands-on coverage, it is described as the regular-production titanium counterpart to the earlier limited AMADEE-24 titanium Novonaut, using the black-dial Legacy look.

The N-42 collection arrived in October 2023 as a successor to the B-42 Cosmonauts Chronograph, according to Fratello’s launch coverage. That is useful collection context, not evidence that the Titanium Legacy itself is a 2026 launch.

How it differs from the steel Legacy

The headline change is material and weight, not a smaller case. Fratello reports the titanium watch at 161 g on bracelet and compares it with 225 g for the steel model. The reviewer’s report is not a laboratory measurement, but it gives a useful indication of the on-bracelet difference: 64 g, or roughly 28% less than the cited steel weight.

The earlier steel N-42 Legacy coverage also gives a 225 g bracelet weight. The black Legacy-style dial remains the visual anchor on the titanium model, with gold-plated chronograph hands and circular-grained subdials noted by Fratello. That combination gives the black dial a warm contrast without removing the dense instrument-like layout.

Choice What the cited coverage establishes Practical implication
Titanium Legacy 161 g on bracelet, reported by Fratello in March 2025; brushed titanium case and bracelet Lower reported bracelet weight for someone who wants the N-42 format with less mass on the wrist
Steel N-42 Legacy 225 g on bracelet, reported in Fratello’s 2023 coverage The heavier version supplies the same substantial-wear character associated with the steel N-42

The cited sources do not establish a different movement or complication set between these two Legacy materials. For the Titanium Legacy, the confirmed specification is Werk 17 with chronograph, day/date and rotating timing bezel.

Size and wrist fit: lighter does not mean small

A 42 mm diameter can understate how much wrist presence this watch has. The 44 mm bezel, 51 mm lug-to-lug span and 15 mm thickness are the more useful figures to consider if a watch tends to overhang your wrist or catch on a cuff. Titanium reduces weight, not those dimensions.

Weppelink said the titanium model felt lighter than the stainless versions and wore comfortably on his 18.5 cm wrist. In Fratello’s 2023 steel N-42 coverage, the same reviewer said the steel watch sat well on his 19 cm wrist. Those are individual fit observations, not a guarantee for another wrist shape; wrist circumference alone does not describe flatness or the available span across the wrist.

Movement and everyday functions

Fortis Werk 17 is an automatic column-wheel chronograph with a stated 60-hour power reserve. Fratello lists its frequency as 28,800 vibrations per hour and its jewel count as 26. The layout combines central chronograph seconds with 30-minute and 12-hour counters, so the watch can time longer intervals than a simple elapsed-seconds chronograph.

Weppelink cautions that removing bracelet links can be tricky because the screws are double-headed. He suggests using two screwdrivers or a Fortis Mirror Tool. That is the reviewer’s practical observation; if you are not equipped to hold both ends securely, a watchmaker or authorized retailer can help avoid damaging the screws or bracelet.

Price and availability

Fortis’s collection page lists the Titanium Legacy on Block bracelet at CHF 5,150 at access in 2026. Fratello’s March 14, 2025 review listed €5,800 including taxes and duties and US$5,360 excluding taxes and duties. These are source- and market-specific listings from different dates and tax treatments, not interchangeable global prices.

Fortis provides a configure/buy route on its collection page, but the cited material does not confirm live inventory for a particular country or dealer. Check local stock, final taxes and delivery terms before ordering.

Who should consider the Titanium Legacy?

  • Consider it if you want the N-42’s chronograph, day/date and 200 m specification in titanium, and value the lower reported bracelet weight over steel.
  • Check the fit carefully if 51 mm lug-to-lug or 15 mm thickness tends to overwhelm your wrist or clothing; titanium cannot change the case footprint.
  • Compare the steel version if weight is not a concern and you prefer the heavier feel, while remembering that the supplied coverage does not establish a price comparison at the same date and market.
  • Confirm the full purchase cost in your region because the documented prices use different currencies and tax treatments.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
