The 2016 Hublot Big Bang Unico Sapphire All Black is a 45 mm limited-edition chronograph built around a striking contradiction: its smoky-black sapphire case is designed to recede, while the intricate movement inside remains on view. It is visually arresting, but the see-through construction comes with a practical cost: the hands-on review found its legibility less than ideal.
What the All Black Sapphire is
Hublot presented reference 411.JB.4901.RT at Baselworld 2016 as a 500-piece edition. It belongs to the Big Bang Unico Sapphire family, but it is not the transparent-cased sibling: this version uses polished, smoky-black sapphire to create a dark, monochromatic effect. Case, transparency and wrist presence
The case measures 45 mm across and is made from polished smoky-black sapphire crystal. The sapphire components are metal-coated to produce the smoked appearance; some smaller components are titanium. The hands-on review also reports anti-reflective treatment on both sides of the sapphire crystals. Xavier Markl’s review says the watch wears well for a 45 mm case. That is one reviewer’s impression, not a guarantee of fit: case diameter alone does not establish how a watch will sit on a particular wrist. The sapphire construction is the defining novelty, but it also exposes the movement rather than providing a calm, opaque dial background.

The HUB1242 Unico movement and functions
Inside is Hublot’s self-winding HUB1242 Unico movement, with a flyback chronograph and date indication. The cited 2016 review gives a 72-hour power reserve, a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and a total of 330 components; the Fondation Haute Horlogerie model record also states the 72-hour reserve. These specifications make the movement a substantial part of the watch’s visual identity, not simply a mechanism hidden behind the dial.
Legibility and everyday limits
Markl’s hands-on assessment calls legibility “not optimal.” That trade-off follows the design’s priorities: the dark, transparent architecture emphasizes depth and movement visibility, while the layered display can make quick reading less straightforward. The published water-resistance rating is 50 m. That is a specification, not a recommendation for a particular water activity; owners should follow Hublot’s guidance for the watch’s condition and use.

Launch price and present-day availability
Monochrome Watches reported a 2016 launch price of €63,000 for this All Black Sapphire. It is a historical price, not a current retail quote. The transparent sapphire sibling was reported in February 2016 at CHF 55,000, €57,100 and US$57,900; those figures apply to the sibling, not reference 411.JB.4901.RT. Secondary-market prices are time-sensitive and seller-specific. WatchCharts’ exact-reference page showed an estimate dated September 7, 2026, but the reported search result did not provide a stable, fully rendered figure suitable for quoting. GINZA RASIN surfaced an exact-reference pre-owned listing in a July 20, 2026 snapshot; a listing price is an asking price, not evidence of a completed sale. Hublot’s current US Big Bang collection page includes a changing selection and sapphire and 45 mm categories, but the available results do not establish whether this exact reference is currently offered by Hublot. Sapphire Unico models continued after the All Black, but later watches are distinct references rather than updates to this exact edition. Hublot’s 2025 Water Blue Sapphire release, for example, is a 44 mm model with the HUB1280 movement, 50 m water resistance, a 72-hour reserve and a 50-piece edition.
