What the L3.810.4.53.0 is
This is the black-dial, brown-leather-strap configuration of the 40 mm Longines Spirit automatic. It displays hours, minutes, seconds and the date. Fratello’s September 2020 review lists a stainless-steel case, sapphire crystal, closed steel caseback, 100 m water resistance and a 21 mm lug width. Its specification table gives the case thickness as 12.5 mm, while the review’s prose says 12.2 mm, so the source does not provide one consistent thickness figure. Fratello’s exact-reference review

Dial and everyday readability
Robert-Jan Broer of Fratello describes a layered dial with large applied Arabic numerals, a raised outer minute track and diamond-shaped luminous markers. The date aperture occupies the position where a 3 would otherwise appear, and the seconds hand has a red tip. His impression was that the dial remained easy to read despite its many details.
Hodinkee’s 2020 hands-on account offers a useful variation in lighting and wear. Its reviewer says the matte black dial can look almost gray in direct light, and found that the anti-reflective coating could show a distracting purple sheen. The reviewer also praised the lume. Movement: the L888.4
The reviewed .53.0 is reported with Longines caliber L888.4, an automatic movement with ETA A31.L11 lineage. Fratello lists 21 jewels, a 25,200-vibrations-per-hour frequency, a 64-hour power reserve, a silicon balance spring and chronometer certification. Hodinkee independently identifies the original 40 mm Spirit’s L888.4 as ETA-based and corroborates the 64-hour reserve and silicon balance spring.
That 64-hour figure belongs to the reviewed L888.4 configuration. Longines’ current US product page found for this collection is for the different L3.810.4.53.6 on a steel bracelet; its 72-hour reserve should not be substituted for the .53.0 specification. Longines US page for L3.810.4.53.6

Fit, case and strap
Fratello’s Broer reports that the 40 mm case worked on his 19 cm wrist, but that is one reviewer’s fit experience, not a guarantee for other wrists. He notes that the lugs are long and pointed. Hodinkee likewise observed that the lugs spread across the wrist and that the large crown became more noticeable with wear. The crown’s size can make it easy to grip, according to Broer, but its prominence may not suit every wearer.
The reviewed watch came on a brown calf-leather strap. Broer called it thick but comfortable. If replacing it, the reported lug width is 21 mm: search for a 21 mm brown leather watch strap, then confirm that the strap’s taper, thickness and buckle fit your preferences and hardware.

Historical price and what remains unknown
Published prices for the exact .53.0 are historical 2020 listings, not current quotes. Fratello listed it at €2,040 including tax and the Prestige edition at €2,650; Hodinkee listed $2,150. The sources do not establish a current price or availability for the L3.810.4.53.0.
Longines’ currently accessible US page is for the related L3.810.4.53.6 bracelet model. It lists $2,550, 72 hours of reserve, 10 bar water resistance and a five-year warranty for that reference; those details do not confirm the .53.0’s current price, specification or warranty terms.

Who should consider this reference?
- Consider it if: you want a 40 mm three-hand-and-date watch with a detailed black dial, a chronometer-certified automatic movement and a leather strap.
- Try it on if possible: long lugs and a large crown can affect comfort and appearance, and the reviewer wrist examples cannot predict your fit.
- Check before buying: confirm the exact reference, strap configuration, condition, local price and applicable warranty. Listings for the bracelet .53.6 are not evidence of .53.0 availability or terms.
