The Panerai Luminor Tourbillon GMT PAM00768 is a 47mm, skeletonized Luminor built around a hand-wound, six-day tourbillon movement. Its DMLS titanium case and Carbotech components give it a distinctive technical look, but the size is a serious part of the experience: Fratello reviewer Robert-Jan Broer found it uncomfortable for him, even while praising the movement’s finishing and audible “twinkle.” This is a specialist piece whose mechanical theater and unusual construction are easier to appreciate than its proportions are to wear.
What the PAM00768 is
Panerai introduced the Luminor Tourbillon GMT “Lo Scienziato” PAM00768 in 2019. “Lo Scienziato” means “the Scientist” in Italian, and the line is presented as a tribute to Galileo Galilei. Monochrome Watches traces the concept from a 48mm Radiomir in 2010 to a 3D-printed Luminor in 2016, before this 2019 version brought its distinctive materials and construction. Monochrome Watches’ 2019 launch coverage provides that history.
Case, materials, and proportions
DMLS titanium with Carbotech details
The case measures 47mm across and is made from sandblasted Grade 5 titanium using Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS), a metal additive-manufacturing process. The bezel, winding crown, and crown-protecting safety lock lever are Carbotech. A military-green flange adds contrast to the dark case and openworked movement. The materials make the watch visually distinctive, but they do not make its footprint discreet.
Wrist presence and water resistance
Fratello lists the case at 17.66mm thick and rates water resistance at 100m (10 bar). In his week-long wear, Broer found the 47mm case too large for his comfort, while noting that titanium helped keep the watch’s weight down. That is one reviewer’s experience, not a wrist-size rule: fit depends on more than diameter, and the available review does not establish a universal wrist measurement for this model. The P.2005/T movement and its displays
Inside is Panerai’s hand-wound P.2005/T, a movement with three spring barrels and a six-day power reserve. Fratello and Monochrome both report 277 components; Monochrome gives the movement’s weight as 23g. Its open construction makes the mechanism a central visual feature rather than something hidden behind a conventional dial.
- Time: hours and minutes.
- Small seconds: a subsidiary seconds display.
- GMT: a second-time-zone indication.
- 24-hour indication: distinguishes day and night for the second time zone.
- Power reserve: an indicator on the front of the watch.
- Tourbillon: the cage completes a rotation every 30 seconds, with its axis perpendicular to the balance wheel.
The rapid, perpendicular-axis tourbillon is a technical signature, while the six-day reserve means the movement is designed to run for an extended period between windings when fully wound. The openworked layout foregrounds those mechanics; readers prioritizing an immediately plain time display may find this arrangement less direct than a conventional dial.
What it is like to wear and observe
Broer wore the PAM00768 for about a week. Alongside his reservations about the dimensions, he praised the movement’s finishing and its audible sound. In his words: “The Panerai Luminor Tourbillon GMT PAM00768 did impress me with its technicalities, the finishing of the movement, and the loud ‘twinkle’ of the movement (I know it’s not an official feature).”
Rank #2
- GMT Swiss Watch: The practical GMT function makes it possible to display two time zones simultaneously thanks to an additional hand that makes one complete revolution in 24 hours and uses a bezel graduated over 24 hours to indicate a second time zone.
- Movement: Automatic Mido Caliber 80 with Navichron balance spring which reduces magnetic interference and is remarkably robust against impacts and the effects of time. This caliber ensures exceptional autonomy of up to 80 hours.
- Water Resistance: This Swiss-made MIDO timepiece is capable of withstanding pressures of up to 20 bar (200 m/660 ft), and equipped with a screw-down crown, this watch offers optimal protection against water.
- Case Size: 44mm - Case Thickness: 13.38mm. Stainless steel case with blue ceramic bezel and Sapphire crystal with double sided anti-reflection treatment - Lug Width 22mm
- Strap: Tapered, Blue Fabric Strap with Pin Buckle
He also recounted that his wife could hear the watch while they were in a car. That is an anecdote from his review, not a measured sound test or a guarantee that every owner will hear the same thing.
Straps and historical pricing
Fratello reported the watch supplied with a grey alligator strap and a second black Velcro strap with anthracite stitching, fitted with a titanium clasp. The 2019 launch coverage and 2021 review both listed a historical price of €145,000 including tax. That figure is a launch-era reference, not a current market valuation or confirmation of present availability. Neither the supplied strap configuration nor current stock should be assumed to remain unchanged.
Verdict: a technical statement piece with demanding proportions
The PAM00768’s strongest case is its combination of unusual construction and visible mechanical substance: DMLS Grade 5 titanium, Carbotech components, a skeletonized P.2005/T, six-day reserve, and a distinctive tourbillon arrangement. Its scale is equally central to the decision. Broer’s experience shows that titanium’s lower weight does not necessarily overcome the discomfort of a large case. It makes most sense for someone drawn to the engineering and visual presence who can assess the fit in person; the historical launch price and an adjacent Panerai reference are not substitutes for verified current pricing or availability.
