No: the Oris Artelier S is better understood as a restrained, time-only dress-oriented watch than as a purpose-built tool watch. Its 38 mm steel case and automatic movement are practical everyday-watch features, but Oris specifies just 3 bar (30 m) water resistance, and the watch has no task-specific complication beyond telling time. The “not a tool watch” label is an editorial judgment based on those specifications and its dress-like design, not an official Oris classification.
What the Artelier S is designed to do
The Artelier S keeps its display simple: central hours, minutes and seconds, with no date. Oris lists stop seconds, which lets the seconds hand halt when setting the time. There is no second time zone, chronograph, rotating timing bezel or other task-specific feature in the official specification. That makes it a straightforward time-only watch rather than a specialist instrument.
Oris lists the current US versions in black (reference 01 733 7762 4054-07 5 20 69FC) and green (reference 01 733 7762 4057-07 5 20 70FC). The black US listing is priced at $2,300 and currently marked unavailable online; price and stock can differ by region and change over time. Europa Star’s November 2023 coverage describes black or green dials paired with dark brown or black leather straps and folding clasps. Oris’s US product listing is the reference for current US specifications and availability.
Why it is not a tool watch
3 bar water resistance sets a clear limit
Oris specifies 3 bar (30 m) water resistance. That is a modest rating, not a basis for treating the watch as suitable for swimming or diving. The water-resistance figure is the strongest practical distinction between this dress-oriented design and watches intended for regular water exposure. It does not, by itself, establish protection from impacts, dust or other hazards.

The design prioritizes restraint over task legibility
The black or forest-green dial, simple three-hand arrangement, slim markers and leather strap give the Artelier S a formal, understated character. In his September 30, 2023 review, Fratello’s Daan de Groot described the case as pebble-like and fully polished, and noted that the double-domed sapphire adds a three-dimensional effect across the dial. Those are his observations, not a claim of personal testing here. Fratello’s review also characterizes the watch as elegant and dress-like.
Its specification is for simple timekeeping
The movement is Oris Calibre 733, an automatic calibre with a stated 38-hour power reserve and frequency of 28,800 A/h (4 Hz). Fratello and Oracle of Time identify its base as the Sellita SW200-1; that identification comes from those publications, rather than the official Oris specification. The movement supplies reliable conventional functions, but the watch does not add a complication that turns it into a purpose-built tool. Oracle of Time’s 2023 launch coverage called it the closest thing Oris had to a dress watch, a publication’s description rather than a formal category assigned by Oris.

What you get on the wrist
Oris specifies a 38.00 mm multi-piece stainless-steel case, a domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on the inside, and a screwed steel case back with see-through mineral glass. The interhorn width is 20 mm. Fratello’s review reports approximately 44 mm lug-to-lug and 11 mm thickness; those are the reviewer’s measurements, since Oris’s current listing does not state them.
De Groot wrote that the polished case’s “pebble shape sits very nicely and comfortably on the wrist.” He also praised the uncluttered layout. That offers a useful perspective on the wearing experience, but it remains one reviewer’s impression, not a universal fit guarantee: wrist shape, strap adjustment and personal preference all matter.

“Tool watch” is a useful design description, not a single formal category with one universal checklist. For a watch intended to support a particular activity, assess whether its protections and functions fit that job rather than relying on the label alone.
- Water exposure: compare the stated water resistance with the activity you have in mind; the Artelier S’s 3 bar rating does not make it a swimming or diving choice.
- Legibility: consider whether the dial is easy to read in the lighting and conditions where you will use it. The Artelier S’s restrained markers and clean display emphasize simplicity and appearance.
- Task-specific functions: check for features such as elapsed-time measurement or another function required for the task. The Artelier S is time-only.
- Protection and wear: look at crystal, case and strap choices in relation to knocks, water and daily use. A leather strap and polished case suit the Artelier S’s dress-oriented presentation better than a specialized work setup.
Price, warranty and availability
Oris’s US product page lists the black model at $2,300 and marks it unavailable online at the time reflected by that listing. The same page states a two-year warranty, extended to three years with MyOris registration; warranty terms should be checked on the regional Oris site for the country of purchase.
