Squale’s Super-Squale pairs a compact 38 mm case and 200 m water resistance with styling drawn from 1960s skin divers. In Fratello’s November 30, 2022 hands-on review, Thomas Van Straaten found the silver version comfortable and well integrated on its beads-of-rice bracelet, but less legible than the other dial options. Whether it suits you comes down chiefly to its vintage-leaning design, modest proportions and your preference for a bracelet or strap.
What the Super-Squale is—and what has changed
Fratello described the Super-Squale as a reissue of a 1960s skin-diver design. Squale’s own collection page says the model launched in the 1960s and that Charles von Büren registered the “Super-Squale” trademark alongside the Squale brand in 1959. The manufacturer calls it one of its most popular watches; that is Squale’s description, not an independently measured ranking.
The 2022 review covered a launch-era selection of vintage-inspired and contemporary versions. Squale still lists the collection, but its current range includes additional names and colors, such as Big Arrows models. Treat the review’s variant descriptions and prices as a snapshot of that launch, not a complete guide to today’s catalog.

The review also mentioned a brown sunray version that was exclusive to the UK at the time. These are launch-era details from the Fratello review; current official listings show a broader assortment, including black, blue, green, grey and brown combinations. Check the specific reference for its current dial, bezel and lume details rather than assuming the 2022 configuration still applies.

Case, movement and dive-watch specifications
The silver watch reviewed by Fratello measured 38 mm in diameter, 45 mm lug-to-lug and 12 mm thick. Its reported equipment included 200 m water resistance, a screw-down crown, a screw-in solid caseback, a 120-click unidirectional bezel and a double-domed sapphire crystal. Fratello reported a Sellita SW200-1 Elaboré automatic movement, beating at 4 Hz with a 38-hour power reserve.
Squale’s current collection page continues to give the Super-Squale a 38 mm case and 200 m water resistance. A current official blue bracelet product listing also identifies a Sellita SW 200-1 automatic movement with a 38-hour reserve, double-domed anti-reflective sapphire and 20 ATM water resistance. Specifications can vary by reference; consult the selected model’s live listing for its exact configuration. The review records product specifications, not independent tests of water resistance, accuracy or durability.

What wearing the silver version was like
Van Straaten said the proportions and bracelet made the silver version comfortable on his wrist. He liked how the beads-of-rice bracelet integrated with the case and noted five microadjustment positions. He also called it jangly and pointed out that it lacks on-the-fly adjustment. Those are one reviewer’s wearing impressions, not a universal fit guarantee.
His main reservation about the silver dial was legibility: he found it less readable than the other versions. If quick contrast and at-a-glance reading matter most, compare the exact dial options in person or in clear product images before choosing. The more subdued silver treatment may appeal to someone prioritizing its vintage look over maximum contrast.

Choosing between the Super-Squale and a Squale 1521
Van Straaten’s own recommendation was preference-led: he liked the Super-Squale’s close-to-original 1960s styling and ordered one, while suggesting that readers wanting a less vintage look consider the Squale 1521. That is his personal styling advice, not a controlled comparison. Use the points below to decide which direction better fits your needs:
- Proportions: The Super-Squale’s reviewed 38 × 45 × 12 mm dimensions give you a compact diameter with a 45 mm tip-to-tip length. Consider how that shape sits on your wrist, especially if you usually prefer larger cases.
- Dial character and readability: The vintage-inspired sunray and aged-lume treatment leans retro; the flat contemporary dials use painted markers and white lume. The reviewer specifically found the silver version less legible.
- Bracelet or strap: The review praised the beads-of-rice bracelet’s integration but noted its jangly feel and lack of on-the-fly adjustment. The launch review also listed leather-strap versions; check current availability for the exact configuration you want.
- Movement and ownership: The reviewed watch used a Sellita SW200-1 Elaboré automatic movement. Current official listings also identify the SW 200-1, but verify the grade and specifications on the particular reference. If service access or cost is a deciding factor, ask a qualified watchmaker or Squale about support for your location.
- Water resistance: The review and current collection page specify 200 m. That rating is a product specification, not a report of the reviewer testing the watch underwater.
Launch prices versus current listings
Fratello’s 2022 launch prices were CHF 975 on leather and CHF 1,070 on bracelet for contemporary versions, and CHF 1,010 on leather and CHF 1,105 on bracelet for vintage-inspired versions. Those are historical prices, not current quotes; the review also reported some versions sold out with restocking expected in early December 2022.

At the time the official Big Arrows Blue Bracelet listing was accessed in 2026, it displayed €1,440 including VAT for the United States – Georgia regional selection and stated “Available · Shipped in 24-48h.” That is one product page and regional display, not a universal price or a guarantee of present stock.
