The 38mm Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Automatique is not simply a smaller version of the existing watch. Blancpain reworked the case around the compact format, producing a 38.20mm diameter, a reported 43.5–43.8mm lug-to-lug length, and a 12mm thickness. The result is a Fifty Fathoms that keeps its 300-meter water resistance and unmistakable dive-watch identity while wearing with considerably less visual and physical presence than the 42mm and 45mm models.
That gives the new watch a distinct personality: less overtly tool-like than the 45mm, less sporty and imposing than the 42mm, and more discreet, vintage-leaning, and luxurious on the wrist. It may be the most versatile current Fifty Fathoms Automatique, but its price means that “versatile” should not be confused with “accessible.”
A genuinely redesigned 38mm Fifty Fathoms
Blancpain introduced the classic, non-mother-of-pearl 38mm Fifty Fathoms models on June 17, 2025, after launching two mother-of-pearl versions the previous week. The expansion completes the core Fifty Fathoms Automatique size range at 38mm, 42mm, and 45mm.
The important word is completes. This is not a case of taking the 45mm watch and reducing every dimension proportionally. Blancpain says the case was completely reworked for balance and harmony, and the dimensions support that claim. The 38mm model measures 38.20mm across, 12.00mm thick, and 19.00mm between the lugs. Hands-on reports put its case length at approximately 43.5–43.8mm.

That last measurement explains much of the wearing experience. Diameter tells only part of the story; lug-to-lug length determines how far a watch extends across the wrist, while thickness affects how prominently it sits above the hand. The short lugs and compact case length make this watch feel smaller than its headline diameter suggests. One hands-on reviewer, writing about the watch on an 18cm wrist, found it comfortable and ultimately preferred it to the larger alternatives. That is a reviewer impression, not a universal fit guarantee, but it captures the central point: the 38mm has been proportioned to behave like a compact watch.
It is also approximately 2.5mm thinner than the 42mm model, according to hands-on coverage. That difference is substantial in practical wear. A reduction in thickness, lug span, and case mass can change a watch’s presence more than a few millimeters of diameter.
What the 38mm model looks like
The classic models retain the visual formula that makes a Fifty Fathoms immediately recognizable: cardinal Arabic numerals, triangular hour markers, broad glaive-shaped hands, generous luminous treatment, and a date window positioned around 4:30.
The standard versions use tone-on-tone date discs, which reduce the contrast and keep the aperture from interrupting the dial as aggressively as a white date disc would. The location remains controversial. Some buyers will appreciate the practical date; others will see the 4:30 opening as a visual compromise on a dial otherwise built around strong symmetry and large, legible markers.

Its glossy appearance recalls the look of vintage Bakelite-style dive-watch bezels, but this is a modern sapphire component—not a claim that the watch uses Bakelite. The black steel model has the most historically direct palette: a black sunburst dial, black bezel, and polished stainless-steel case. The blue titanium and red-gold versions use coordinated blue dials and bezels.
Three materials, three different watches
Polished stainless steel: the traditional choice
The stainless-steel version is the clearest modern expression of the original Fifty Fathoms idea. It combines a black sunburst dial and black bezel with a fully polished case. That all-over polish is worth noting because the larger references use some brushed components; the 38mm steel model therefore has a more jewelry-like surface treatment than the dimensions alone might suggest.
It is the version to choose if you want the smallest case with the most familiar Fifty Fathoms visual language. It remains unmistakably a dive watch, but the compact proportions and polished finishing make it less aggressively instrumental than the 45mm.

Grade 23 titanium: the lightest and most contemporary
The titanium model changes the character more than its blue color might suggest. Its case is satin-brushed rather than fully polished, and titanium reduces the physical weight on the wrist. The blue dial and bezel give it a more contemporary, less historically austere appearance.

The trade-off is that it is less visually direct than the black steel model and does not have the same old-school tool-watch effect.
18-carat red gold: luxury first, dive watch second
The red-gold version keeps the blue dial-and-bezel configuration but moves the watch decisively toward precious-metal luxury. It retains the dive-watch architecture, yet the material changes the social and visual message. This is not the discreet choice in practical terms, even though the case is discreet in size.
Among the three, red gold is the most overtly luxurious and the least likely to be mistaken for a straightforward professional instrument. It makes sense for a buyer who specifically wants the tension between serious water resistance and a precious-metal case.
The movement: Calibre 1150 instead of Calibre 1315
The 38mm classic models use Blancpain Manufacture Calibre 1150, not the Calibre 1315 found in the 42mm and 45mm Fifty Fathoms models. That change is part of the engineering work required to make the smaller case balanced and wearable; it is not evidence that the 38mm is a mechanically inferior version.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Calibre 1150 measures 26.20mm in diameter and 3.25mm thick. It runs at 3 Hz, uses 28 jewels and 210 components, and delivers a 100-hour power reserve from a twin-barrel arrangement. A silicon balance spring contributes contemporary resistance to magnetic fields. The movement is visible through a sapphire case back and has an 18-carat gold rotor with NAC coating, along with decorated bridges and beveled edges noted in hands-on coverage.
A four-day-plus reserve is particularly useful on a watch intended for regular rotation. If you take it off on Friday evening, it should have a reasonable chance of still running on Tuesday. That does not eliminate the need to set the watch eventually, and it is not a substitute for a watch winder if someone prefers one—but a winder is certainly not necessary simply because this is an automatic watch.
Do not confuse the classic and mother-of-pearl versions
The two mother-of-pearl 38mm editions are mechanically different. They use Calibre 1153 and omit the date display. Therefore, “the 38mm Fifty Fathoms” does not describe one completely uniform specification: the classic steel, titanium, and red-gold watches use date-equipped Calibre 1150, while the mother-of-pearl variants are date-free and use Calibre 1153.

Still a serious dive watch
The smaller case does not reduce the headline dive-watch specification. The 38mm Fifty Fathoms Automatique is rated to 300 meters, or 30 bar, and retains a screw-down crown, screwed case back, sapphire crystal, and unidirectional rotating bezel.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Those are the core elements that matter here. Blancpain’s historical Fifty Fathoms story began in 1953 with a combination of water resistance, automatic winding, luminous legibility, a rotating bezel, and anti-magnetic protection. The model became an important early template for professional dive watches. It is better to describe that historical role carefully than to repeat the overly broad claim that it was simply “the first dive watch ever.”
The available material supports the specifications and short-term wearing impressions, but not independent claims about chronometric accuracy, long-term durability, service intervals, magnetic performance in real-world use, or dive performance. A 300-meter rating is a stated specification, not the same thing as an independent dive test.
Straps, bracelets, and the 19mm problem
The 19mm lug width is an important practical detail. Depending on the reference, Blancpain offers Tropic rubber, NATO, sail-canvas, stainless-steel bracelet, and Grade 23 titanium bracelet options, with pin-buckle and folding-clasp configurations. Launch coverage reported bracelets for the steel and titanium versions, but availability is configuration-dependent and should be checked against the exact reference.
A 19mm lug width is less common than 20mm, so replacement straps are not interchangeable by assumption. If you are shopping for a 19mm NATO watch strap, verify the actual width, spring-bar compatibility, buckle hardware, and the seller’s material specifications. A generic strap should not be described as Blancpain-made, officially compatible, or suitable for diving unless the individual listing establishes those facts. For water use, the strap, spring bars, clasp, and installation all matter—not just the watch’s case rating.
The same caution applies to sail-canvas and rubber alternatives. They can change the 38mm model’s character substantially, but the correct fit depends on the 19mm lug width and the particular end-link or buckle arrangement. The bracelet is also not a universal right across the range; current stock and configuration should be confirmed reference by reference.
38mm versus 42mm versus 45mm
| Size | Reported character | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| 38mm | Compact, discreet, vintage-leaning, and more luxurious | Buyers prioritizing proportion, lower wrist presence, and everyday versatility |
| 42mm | The middle-ground sporty option | Those who want a substantial modern diver without the largest case |
| 45mm | The most serious-looking and overtly tool-like | Buyers who want maximum presence and the traditional large Fifty Fathoms stance |
These are character distinctions drawn from reviewer comparisons, not objective rankings. There is no universally best size. The 45mm remains the obvious choice if the appeal of the Fifty Fathoms is its imposing professional-diver presence. The 42mm occupies the familiar compromise position. The 38mm is the most compelling answer if the larger watches feel too conspicuous or physically demanding.
The new case also has a more vintage-leaning visual effect, despite using modern materials, sapphire, and a contemporary movement. That combination is what separates it from a generic small dive watch: it is compact without abandoning the oversized numerals, luminous hands, rotating bezel, and strong historical identity that define the collection.

Pricing and availability
Prices depend on geography, case material, strap, bracelet, and clasp. Blancpain’s June 2025 international release listed Swiss-franc starting ranges of CHF 14,000–16,300 for stainless steel, CHF 15,000–16,600 for Grade 23 titanium, and CHF 25,600–28,500 for 18-carat red gold.
At the U.S. launch, reported prices began at $16,700 for steel on a strap with pin buckle, $17,900 for titanium on a strap with pin buckle, and $30,600 for red gold on a pin buckle. Deployant clasps and bracelets raised the prices. These are launch figures, not a promise of current pricing or availability, and they should not be converted directly from the Swiss-franc ranges.
For current specifications and the exact configuration, consult the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms 38mm product information and confirm the reference with a Blancpain boutique or authorized retailer. The current U.S. product information confirms the steel model’s 38.20mm case, 30-bar water resistance, Calibre 1150, 100-hour reserve, date display, and polished bracelet configuration, but availability and price can vary.

- Choose the 38mm if you like the Fifty Fathoms design but find 42mm and 45mm watches visually or physically excessive.
- Choose steel if you want the most historically direct black-and-white configuration and do not mind the fully polished case.
- Choose titanium if low weight, satin finishing, and a blue contemporary palette matter more than historical restraint.
- Choose red gold if you want the dive-watch specification wrapped in unmistakable precious-metal luxury.
- Choose a mother-of-pearl version if you prefer a date-free dial and understand that it uses Calibre 1153 rather than the date-equipped Calibre 1150.
- Look at the 42mm or 45mm if the main attraction is the large, commanding instrument-watch presence rather than compact wearability.
The real barrier is not capability. The 38mm retains the essential Fifty Fathoms package: 300-meter resistance, a unidirectional sapphire bezel, automatic winding, a sapphire display back, and a 100-hour reserve. The barrier is price, especially when the steel watch begins above $16,000 in the United States and the red-gold model exceeds $30,000 at launch.
Verdict
The new 38mm Blancpain Fifty Fathoms succeeds because Blancpain treated the smaller size as a design problem rather than a scaling exercise. Its 43.5–43.8mm reported lug-to-lug length, 12mm thickness, short lugs, and redesigned proportions make a meaningful difference on the wrist.

It is not a lesser Fifty Fathoms. It is a different one: more discreet than the 42mm, less tool-like than the 45mm, and more refined and vintage-leaning in effect. Calibre 1150 provides the compact case with a substantial 100-hour reserve, while the 300-meter rating preserves the collection’s technical credibility.
There are still decisions to make. The 4:30 date window will divide opinions, the polished steel case is dressier than some buyers may expect, bracelet availability varies, and the price is formidable. But for someone seeking the most wearable and least imposing current Fifty Fathoms Automatique, the 38mm is the strongest candidate in the lineup.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the 38mm Blancpain Fifty Fathoms a scaled-down 42mm or 45mm model?
No. Blancpain reworked the case and proportions for the smaller format. It measures 38.20mm wide, 12mm thick, and approximately 43.5–43.8mm lug-to-lug, with short lugs that give it a notably more compact stance.
What movement is in the 38mm Fifty Fathoms?
The classic steel, titanium, and red-gold models use Manufacture Calibre 1150. It runs at 3 Hz and provides a 100-hour power reserve from twin barrels. The two mother-of-pearl 38mm models use date-free Calibre 1153 instead.
Does the 38mm Fifty Fathoms have the same water resistance as the larger models?
The 38mm Automatique is rated to 300 meters, or 30 bar, and has a screw-down crown, screwed case back, sapphire crystal, and unidirectional rotating bezel. That is the stated specification; the available hands-on reports do not constitute independent dive or water-resistance testing.
What does the 38mm Blancpain Fifty Fathoms cost?
At the U.S. launch, reported prices began at $16,700 for steel on a strap with pin buckle, $17,900 for titanium on a strap with pin buckle, and $30,600 for red gold on a pin buckle. Current prices vary by reference, strap, bracelet, clasp, country, and availability.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The 38mm Blancpain Fifty Fathoms is the most discreet and broadly wearable member of the current Automatique range, without giving up the collection’s 300-meter rating or 100-hour movement reserve. It is best understood as a re-proportioned, more refined Fifty Fathoms—not a compromised small version. The price, the divisive 4:30 date window, and configuration-dependent bracelet availability are the main reasons to hesitate.
